Chapter 19: Post-Flashpoint Realities & Caitlin's Cold Comfort
[ SYSTEM MESSAGE: Objective: Build connection with Caitlin Snow. Sub-objective: Establish Emotion Lock-on for Caitlin's powers and medical skills. Primary Skill Acquisition Target: Medical Expertise, Cryokinesis. Emotional Triggers: Empathy, Comfort, Shared Vulnerability. ]
The world snapped back into place with a subtle, almost imperceptible thump. For Adam, with his newly enhanced Time Travel Awareness (now at 50%), the sensation was clearer, like a complex puzzle piece clicking perfectly back into its original slot, but with a few minor nicks and scratches. The timeline, though restored, was not identical. This was the "Flashpoint Ripple."
He found himself back in the familiar S.T.A.R. Labs cortex, the one he knew, the one where the coffee, while still questionable, was at least consistently so. Barry was there, looking exhausted, a faint sadness lingering in his eyes. Cisco was there, but the usual effervescence was dimmed, replaced by a quiet grief. His brother, Dante, was gone again. And Caitlin… Caitlin was different.
She was quieter than usual, her usual calm demeanor now tinged with a subtle nervousness. Adam's Time Travel Awareness subtly highlighted the subtle, growing coldness emanating from her, a subconscious manifestation of the Cryokinesis she was beginning to develop due to the Flashpoint changes.
"Barry," Caitlin said, her voice strained, "are you... are you okay?"
Barry nodded, rubbing his temples. "I'm... I'm tired. And confused. It's back to normal, but... not entirely. Cisco, Dante... he's gone again."
Cisco looked up, his eyes red-rimmed. "It's like... it's like he never existed. But I remember him. I know he existed. It's messing with my head."
Adam stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on Cisco's shoulder. "The temporal ripple, Cisco. When you re-stitch a tapestry, the threads don't always align perfectly. Sometimes, a few threads are lost. It's a cruel side effect of temporal manipulation, but it's not a hallucination. Your memories are real. Your brother was real. The universe just... adjusted."
[ SYSTEM MESSAGE: Emotion Spike Detected: Grief/Loss (Cisco Ramon). While not a primary acquisition trigger for him, your empathy is strengthening his general trust. Good for long-term rapport. ]
He then turned his attention to Caitlin. She was rubbing her arm, a faint shimmer of ice visible for a split second before she clenched her hand. Adam knew. This was her onset.
"Caitlin," he said gently, "are you feeling alright? You seem... a little chilly."
She looked at him, startled. "I'm fine. Just... a little cold. It's nothing." But her eyes darted away, a flicker of fear in them.
"My 'network' has some very advanced theories on... physiological anomalies," Adam continued, lowering his voice, projecting empathy and understanding. He subconsciously drew on his Kryptonian Data Crystal knowledge of alien biologies and medical conditions, framing it as advanced human medical research. "Sometimes, the body reacts to extreme stress, or extreme events, by manifesting... unexpected adaptations. It's like a sudden, evolutionary leap, but often, it comes with a learning curve. And sometimes, a slight temperature drop."
[ SYSTEM MESSAGE: Emotion Lock-on: Caitlin Snow (Fear/Confusion/Compassion). Proximity: Optimal. Target Skills: Medical Expertise, Cryokinesis. Initiate Copy Protocol? Y/N. ]
"Absolutely, yes," Adam thought, feeling the distinct hum associated with Caitlin's unique emotional profile. Her fear was palpable, but so was her intrinsic compassion and intelligence.
Caitlin looked at him, her fear-filled eyes searching his. "Adaptations? What kind of adaptations?"
"Well," Adam said, choosing his words carefully, "depending on the source of the stress, it could manifest as enhanced strength, or enhanced senses, or even... control over certain elemental forces. Like, say, thermal regulation. Or lack thereof." He gave her a knowing, but not judging, look. "It can be frightening, to feel your own body changing, especially when you don't understand why. But sometimes, these changes aren't curses. They're... possibilities."
He subtly extended his hand, not to touch, but as an offer of support. "My 'network' also has some excellent data on managing sudden physiological shifts. Medical solutions, psychological support. It's all about understanding what's happening and then learning to control it. It can be a very lonely path, these 'adaptations,' but it doesn't have to be."
Caitlin hesitated, then, seeing the genuine empathy in his eyes, slowly relaxed her posture. "I... I don't know what you're talking about," she said, but her voice was softer, less defensive. "But thank you. For... for caring."
"Always, Dr. Snow," Adam said, giving her a small, comforting smile. He knew she wouldn't open up fully immediately, but he had planted the seeds of trust. He had shown her he saw beyond the "normal" and understood the fear of the unknown.
Barry, meanwhile, was grappling with his own remorse. "I messed up," he muttered to Adam later, when they were alone for a moment. "I made things worse. I didn't mean to, but I did. My best friend is hurting, and it's because of me."
"It was a mistake born of love, Barry," Adam said, putting a hand on his shoulder. "A profound, human mistake. But you recognized it, and you fixed it. That takes a different kind of courage. And you've got an entire team here who's going to help you through the ripple effects. Even the frosty ones. Trust me, these ripples are manageable. It's the full-blown temporal tsunami you want to avoid." He gave him a reassuring pat.
[ SYSTEM MESSAGE: Emotion Spike Detected: Compassion/Understanding (Caitlin Snow). Proficiency Upgrade: Medical Expertise (10%). Initial proficiency acquired! Her gratitude and fear are fueling the acquisition. You're now marginally qualified to diagnose a hangnail. ]
Adam felt the immediate download of medical knowledge. It wasn't the intuitive understanding of a seasoned doctor, but a baseline of information – anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, basic diagnostics. He could identify symptoms, understand medical jargon, and access foundational medical principles. It was a good start. He could now officially claim to be a "part-time medical consultant" for his "network."
He knew the next meta-human attack, the next moment of intense emotion, would complete the connections with Cisco and Caitlin. And with that, he'd be ready for the next big step: truly becoming a force in the Arrowverse.
