Chapter 24: Long-Distance Love & Kryptonian Insights
[ SYSTEM MESSAGE: Objective: Strengthen long-distance relationship with Kara. Sub-objective: Utilize Kryptonian Data Crystal knowledge to aid Kara with a specific problem. Emotional Triggers: Support, Intimacy, Shared Purpose. ]
Despite the escalating chaos in Central City, Adam's connection to National City, and more importantly, to Kara, remained his anchor. Their nightly video calls had become a cherished ritual, a quiet port in the storm of meta-human threats and temporal anomalies. He missed her fiercely, the easy laughter, the comforting presence, the way she made even the absurdities of his life feel normal.
One evening, as he settled into his Central City apartment (which, thanks to his subtly improving Kinetic Energy Manipulation (50%) and Cryokinesis (80%), now boasted perfectly balanced furniture and an unnaturally cold beverage dispenser), his phone chimed. It was Kara, but her face on the screen was etched with worry.
"Adam, I need your brain," she said without preamble, her voice tight with concern. "We have a situation. A Kryptonian artifact, or at least we think it is. It was uncovered during an excavation outside Kandor – the ancient Kryptonian outpost on Earth. It's... it's doing something to the atmosphere. Draining the ozone layer. Slowly, but definitively."
Adam felt a prickle of alarm. This wasn't some minor meta-human. This was potentially world-ending, straight out of the Kryptonian Data Crystal's warnings. He had seen references to atmospheric processors and terraforming devices gone rogue within the subconscious data.
"Describe it," he urged, his usual banter momentarily forgotten. "Colors, symbols, any kind of energy signature."
"It's a large, crystalline structure," Kara explained, her brow furrowed. "Glowing faintly green, then pulsing red. There are faint symbols etched into it, but even J'onn can't decipher them. And it's emitting a low-frequency hum that's disrupting all our energy scanners." She sighed. "The DEO's best scientists are stumped. We can't even get close enough to study it without feeling drained."
Adam closed his eyes for a moment, focusing on the data. The green glow, the red pulse, the atmospheric drain, the energy disruption. It clicked. The Kryptonian Data Crystal (now a deeply integrated part of his mind) brought up specific schematics, historical warnings, and theoretical countermeasures.
"Kara, it's an atmospheric re-sequencer," Adam stated, his voice calm and authoritative. "A very ancient one, designed for extreme terraforming in uninhabitable environments. The green glow indicates it's drawing atmospheric components – the ozone layer, in this case – to create a breathable Kryptonian atmosphere. The red pulse means it's overloading; it's not adapted for Earth's specific atmospheric composition, and it's basically suffocating itself while trying to convert our air."
Kara's eyes widened in disbelief. "A re-sequencer? But... how do you know all this? J'onn can't even read the symbols!"
"My 'network' is very thorough with its historical and theoretical archives," Adam smoothly deflected. "Especially when it comes to ancient alien tech. Think of it as a very specific kind of cosmic archaeological database." He focused, the subconscious knowledge from the Crystal flowing freely. "The key isn't to shut it down with a blast, or even to contain it. That would only cause a catastrophic implosion as it tries to complete its cycle. You need to reverse its internal energy flow. Feed it a concentrated burst of specific atmospheric elements, then introduce a counter-frequency that resets its core programming."
He described the precise molecular composition needed, the exact frequency of the counter-pulse, and the unique crystalline resonance that would act as the "key" to the device's ancient operating system. He even drew a rudimentary schematic on his screen, pulling from the Crystal's deep-seated blueprints.
"But we don't have the technology to generate that specific atmospheric composition!" Kara exclaimed, looking at the drawing. "Or that counter-frequency!"
"You do," Adam countered, a knowing smile forming. "Or rather, you have the components. You need to adapt one of the DEO's heavy-duty atmospheric scrubbers for the molecular injection, and then... well, your own heat vision, precisely modulated, could generate the crystalline resonance. But you'd need a focusing array. Something that can channel pure solar energy into a very fine, very specific frequency. Something small, portable, and perhaps something your cousin might have in his Fortress of Solitude if he ever got around to cataloging his ancient Kryptonian artifacts properly." He was subtly hinting at the phantom zone projector, or a similar device.
Kara stared at the schematic, then at Adam, a slow dawning of realization on her face. "My heat vision... a focusing array... an atmospheric scrubber..." She suddenly burst into a relieved, exhilarated laugh. "Adam! You're a genius! That's it! It's crazy, but it makes perfect sense!"

"It's all in the details, darling," Adam said, a genuine smile replacing his usual smirk. He felt a deep satisfaction. Not just from aiding her, but from the reinforcement of their bond. The distance was a challenge, but their connection was unwavering, strengthened by shared purpose and his unique ability to help her.
"I miss you," Kara said suddenly, her voice soft, her eyes brimming with affection. "Come back soon. Even if it's just for a day. Central City can spare you for a few hours, can't it?"
Adam's heart swelled. He thought about using his Vibrational Manipulation/Breaching (now 75% proficiency with new practice) to just pop over, but decided against it for now. He was still refining the discretion of his breaches, and a cross-Earth breach on a whim wasn't ideal.
"Central City has a surprising amount of temporal shenanigans keeping me busy," Adam replied, a hint of genuine wistfulness in his voice. "And Barry needs a steadying hand on the temporal tiller. But I promise, the moment this particular chaos subsides, I'll be back. And I'll bring the good coffee. If it exists in this timeline."
He watched her relief wash over her, a beautiful, radiant smile returning to her face. "You better. And Adam? Thank you. For everything."
"Anytime, Supergirl," he said, and for a moment, he let go of the sarcasm, letting the raw affection and commitment shine through. Their bond was strong, a vital anchor in a chaotic multiverse. And his Kryptonian Data Crystal was proving to be an invaluable tool in helping him protect her and her world. The road ahead was long, but he wasn't alone.
