Chapter 54: Chapter 53 – A Web Cut Before Spun
Chapter 53 – A Web Cut Before Spun
The forest rushed past them in a blur of green and motion. Leaves snapped beneath their sandals, branches whipped overhead, and the sound of synchronized footfalls echoed like the beat of war drums through the woods of the Land of Fire.
Kiba was in the lead, crouched low with Akamaru bounding beside him. "Still fresh!" he shouted, sniffing the air. "Sasuke's scent is just ahead, maybe twenty minutes!"
"Keep your focus," Shikamaru called out behind him, eyes sharp. "No signs of traps yet, but Orochimaru's goons aren't amateurs."
Behind them, Naruto panted, fists clenched tight. "We'll catch him. I won't let Sasuke go like this."
Choji huffed beside him, focused but tired. Neji ran like a whisper of motion, silent and precise. Ino kept pace slightly behind Shikamaru, her eyes flicking toward the back of the formation.
There, moving with effortless grace and silent strength, was Hajime.
He was tall, his halberd loosely strapped across his back, muscles flexing beneath his sleeveless black cloak as he ran. The air around him felt… different. Not just strong, dense. Like the forest itself parted slightly in deference to him.
Ino kept stealing glances at him. He looks like someone carved from stone, she thought, cheeks warming despite the mission. What's he even doing here with us? He's more like a walking weapon.
She wasn't wrong.
Shikamaru noticed too, glancing back once in quiet calculation. If he's that strong, maybe… we really can bring Sasuke back.
Then
"Wait." Hajime's voice was calm, but carried weight.
Everyone halted.
A faint twang sounded from above.
Golden threads shot down like lightning, anchoring into the trees and the ground around them with a sticky snap. In an instant, their path was sealed by webbing, and a presence made itself known—perched above, eyes gleaming in cruel amusement.
"Well, well," came the smooth, arrogant voice. "You brats are faster than I expected."
High in the trees stood a tall figure with six arms, each holding a weapon, kunai, bows, thread-wrapped blades. Kidomaru.
He clicked his tongue, smirking. "Let me guess... You're the backup band of Konoha's recovery mission? Tch. Thought they'd send someone stronger."
Naruto growled. "You're one of Orochimaru's!"
Kidomaru ignored him, his golden eyes locking on Neji.
"You… the Hyūga. Yeah. You're a problem."
Thin strands of chakra webbing pulsed between his fingers. "Your eyes can see my traps. So you'll die first."
Neji's gaze sharpened.
More webs began to coat the trees. A combat nest. Tactical.
Then Neji stepped forward.
"I'll stay behind."
The words caught everyone off-guard.
Naruto's brows furrowed. "What?"
Neji turned, looking each of them in the eye. His voice was calm, but held quiet resolve.
"I'll handle this. You all go ahead."
"No way," Naruto snapped. "You don't have to do this alone!"
Neji gave a faint smile.
"I've made my choice."
He turned slightly, speaking more to Naruto now.
"Do you remember what you said to me after our match during the Chūnin Exams? You said I was 'not a failure.' That I could change my destiny."
Naruto blinked.
Neji continued. "Back then, I didn't believe it. I thought fate was absolute, that we were all trapped by our birth, our names, our clans."
He raised his head to meet Naruto's eyes fully.
"But when you beat me… I began to understand. That fate isn't written in stone. That we write our own path, step by step."
The others listened in silence. Even Kidōmaru tilted his head curiously.
"You and Hinata changed something in me. And now… I want to prove you right."
He turned back to face the golden webs.
"I'm a Hyūga. My eyes can see through his traps. I'm the only one suited for this fight."
"Neji" Naruto started.
But Neji raised a hand.
"This is my choice. You have a more important job. You have to catch Sasuke. You have to bring him back."
His voice firmed, every word like steel.
"Let me protect your back this time, Naruto."
"I'll survive." Neji gave a small smile, then looked at Naruto. "Sasuke is your friend. Don't waste time."
There was a pause, then Hajime stepped forward.
Neji turned to him. "I can handle this. You're Taijutsu Shinobi, right? He'll just pin you down."
Hajime tilted his head slightly. "That's what you assumed."
Neji blinked. "What?"
With a calm expression, Hajime walked a few paces forward and looked up at Kidomaru.
The Sound ninja didn't wait. He hissed and let loose a volley of golden arrow-threads, twisting with chakra to pierce and bind.
Hajime raised one hand.
The moment froze.
Literally.
The threads halted mid-air.
Kidomaru's eyes widened in confusion. "What the, ?!"
His body seized up. Arms twitching. Muscles locking. A pressure crushed down around him, like a god pressing a finger onto an ant.
"What's happening?!" he spat, trying to move his bow, to speak a command, to breathe right.
Hajime's eyes glowed faintly. "Your body isn't your own anymore."
With his free hand, he extended two fingers. Psychic lightning coiled from his palm, blue and white, crackling like divine fire.
A second later, he pointed.
The bolt exploded from his hand like the wrath of a star, tearing through the air in a blinding flash. It struck Kidomaru with devastating force, a thunderclap shaking the trees.
A wave of force knocked leaves from branches. Smoke poured down in curls of ash.
When the light faded
There was no web. No trap.
Only burned branches and silence.
Hajime lowered his arm and turned back to the group, expression unchanged.
"No need for farewell speeches yet," he said quietly.
The team just… stared.
Choji's jaw hung open. "That was it?"
Ino whispered, "He didn't even… move."
Shikamaru shook his head slowly, then muttered, "This is starting to feel unfair."
Neji stood still for a moment longer, stunned.
He looked down, the faintest blush on his cheeks. "…I rehearsed that whole speech."
Naruto blinked, then let out a loud laugh.
"Don't worry, Neji," Hajime added gently. "I would've liked to hear the rest."
The team chuckled lightly.
But the tension wasn't gone.
Because now they knew, whatever Hajime was, he wasn't just another ninja. He was something else. Something vast.
And he was on their side.
"Come on," Shikamaru finally said, voice snapping them back. "We've got ground to cover."
The team nodded, and they took off again, this time moving faster, more confident.
And Ino?
Ino glanced sideways at Hajime once more as he ran beside her. His calm eyes stayed on the trail ahead, focused, unreadable.
So strong… and still so quiet.
Who are you really, Hajime?
The wind swept the trees behind them, carrying the scent of ash and silence.
And ahead, Sasuke still slipped deeper into the dark.
