Chapter 65 – "The Calm After the Carving"

Their faces were close.

Too close.

Tsunade didn't move.

She could feel his breath. Shallow. Measured. Still recovering from what should have been a body-shattering trauma. But he was awake. His silver eyes blinked slowly, adjusting to the light.

For a second, the Hokage was speechless.

Not because she was flustered, though she was. But because she knew exactly what she'd done. She had cut open a man's skull. Reached into his brain. Implanted something no human had ever carried. She had felt his nerves, his soul, his essence at her fingertips, and now he stared at her like it had all been nothing.

No pain. No disorientation. Just… awareness.

"…It's done," he murmured again, voice quiet, but clear.

"You should still be unconscious," Tsunade whispered, stunned. "You should continue resting."

"I'm not normal," Hajime said softly, meeting her gaze.

She was still leaning over him. Still hadn't moved. Her hands hovered near his neck, the warmth of medical chakra still lingering.

She realized it then: he had let her in. Not just his body. But his trust. His very core.

And it scared her.

Because she hadn't been Tsunade the Hokage during that surgery.

She had been Tsunade the woman.

She stood up abruptly, pulling her hands away. "Don't move yet. I need to check your vitals."

But Hajime had already sat up.

His movements were slow, methodical, measured with surgical grace. He touched the back of his head, fingertips brushing over the sealed skin. There was no scar. No pain. Only a faint warmth pulsing deep in the center of his skull where the Magnificat now rested.

"I'll handle the rest," he said quietly.

Tsunade opened her mouth to protest, but then watched as a subtle shimmer enveloped his body. A breath of psychic power swept from him, invisible to most, but tangible to her chakra-trained senses. It moved like a current through the room, rippling the chakra threads around him.

Then it concentrated.

He placed his right palm flat over the back of his scalp.

And with a quiet exhale, he healed himself.

Tissue tightened. Nerve clusters fused. Bone thickened and reformed with unnatural precision. Even the microscopic stress of the surgery dissolved under his will.

Then, in a final display, his hair regrew.

Tsunade blinked in disbelief as strands of jet-black hair pushed their way outward, growing steadily until they returned to his usual tousled but smooth style. Each strand precise. Styled with intent.

"You regrew your hair," she said flatly.

"I dislike being bald," Hajime replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

She stared at him.

And then laughed, just once, short and tired. "You're insane."

He stood from the table fully, rotating his neck, flexing his shoulders. He moved with grace, but more than that, with harmony. His body no longer felt like a machine stitched together with raw power. Now it moved as one.

Integrated.

Perfected.

"The others have aligned," Hajime said aloud, almost to himself.

Tsunade furrowed her brows. "You mean the organs?"

He nodded. "Yes. The Magnificat is doing its job. My endocrine system is balanced. Metabolism stable. Heart rate optimized. My neural responses are faster. Stronger. Smarter."

"You're not just improving," she said slowly, "you're evolving."

Hajime didn't answer right away. He walked toward a side console and picked up a thin crystal tablet, reviewing biosign data recorded during the surgery. Then he turned back to her.

"I'm becoming what I was meant to be."

Tsunade didn't like the sound of that. Not because it was wrong, but because she didn't know how much further he'd go. This wasn't ninja medicine anymore. This wasn't even science.

This was transformation.

"Which organs do you have now?" she asked suddenly.

He answered calmly. "The Second Heart, Ossmodula, Biscopea, Sinew Coils, and now the Magnificat."

She blinked. "That's five. That's a lot." Tsunade thought of Orochimaru, his body was also modified, like making his body extremely resistant to blunt force, and can easily make his neck elongated.

He nodded. "There are more organs to implant to fully reach my physical potential. But with the Magnificat in place, I can begin the next wave of enhancement."

Tsunade leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "And how many waves will there be?"

"As many as I can survive," Hajime replied.

There was no arrogance in his voice. Just certainty.

She studied him quietly. "You're still human, Hajime. Don't forget that."

"I haven't," he said. "But I also won't stop here."

That Night

After Tsunade had left, quiet, thoughtful, and more conflicted than she wanted to admit, Hajime stood alone before a reinforced supply crate delivered by masked ANBU agents.

The delivery had been discreet.

Inside, packed with insulation seals and chakra-proofing, were rare and expensive materials, purchased with the earnings he had made over the past month from his clinic-grade inventions:

Adamantine Ore – A legendary, ultra-dense mineral known across the Elemental Nations. Rare and nearly unbreakable, ideal for forming the unyielding core of Hajime's armor. Its weight and strength make it perfect for defense against piercing and crushing forces.

Chakra Metal (大量) – Sourced from specialized forges and hidden mines, chakra metal is highly reactive to chakra flow, making it ideal for forging weapons and armor that can channel or withstand elemental techniques. Hajime requested large quantities to layer into his suit for chakra conductivity and resistance.

Beast-Silk Threads – Silk harvested from a rare chakra-beast known for producing naturally reinforced silk. Once treated with chakra and hardened through psychic refinement, the silk becomes tougher than steel while retaining flexibility, perfect for underlayers or inner joints of the armor.

Miscellaneous High-Grade Metals – Bulk quantities of strong, forge-ready metals gathered from across the continent, ranging from reinforced iron to tempered steel. These serve as the structural framework, providing form and balance between the core adamantine and reactive chakra layers.

This would be the beginning.

Not of a weapon.

But of a second skin.

Hajime closed the lid of the crate and placed both hands on it.

This armor would not be forged with only steel and wire.

It would be an extension of his body.

A reflection of what he had become.

And what he was becoming still.

"Next," he murmured, "is the forge."
