Chapter 30: The Red Light
A week after Batman's visit, their usual warehouse had been transformed into what Tucker proudly called "The Ultimate Anti-League Bunker." Layers of security measures hummed in the background as Desiree floated nearby, her expression a mixture of annoyance and reluctant admiration.
"The wishes are holding, master," she reported, saying the last word like it tasted bitter. "No mystic eye shall pierce these walls, no sound shall escape our bounds, and no technology shall spy upon this sanctuary."
"Good," Samael nodded, ignoring her tone. "Tucker?"
"Man, combining ghost powers with mystical wishes is INSANE!" Tucker's fingers flew across his PDA. "These readings are off the charts! The way the ghostly energy interacts with the wish-magic creates a cascading effect that-"
"TUCKER!" Sam interrupted from where she was adjusting their backup generators. "English, please?"
"It means," Desiree interjected, examining her perfectly manicured spectral nails, "that not even the Dark Knight's precious technology could penetrate these barriers. Though maintaining them is..." she sighed dramatically, "exhausting."
Jazz looked up from her notebook where she'd been documenting their defensive measures. "The psychological implications of using wish-based protection are fascinating. The power of belief combined with supernatural enforcement creates a unique paradigm of-"
"You're doing it too, Jazz," Danny called from near the ceiling, where he was checking the upper sensors. "Though I gotta admit, wishing for Superman-proof soundproofing was pretty clever."
"Clever?" Desiree scoffed. "Try draining. Blocking Kryptonian senses requires more power than you could possibly imagine. Though of course," she added with false sweetness, "anything for my beloved master."
Samael ignored her sarcasm, focusing instead on the security readouts. "The anti-scrying measures?"
"Holding perfectly," Desiree replied, though her eye-roll suggested what she thought of Constantine's abilities. "No third-rate warlock will be peering through MY wishes."
"And the electromagnetic interference field?" Tucker asked, still monitoring his readings.
"Please," Desiree waved dismissively. "I could block Batman's surveillance in my sleep. Though speaking of sleep..." she stretched theatrically, "maintaining all these wishes is rather-"
"Exhausting. Yes. You've mentioned," Sam cut in. "Several times."
"Well excuse me for-" Desiree started, then suddenly tensed. Her form rippled as she sensed something approaching - something that made even her ancient power recoil.
"What is it?" Jazz asked, noticing the ghost's reaction.
"I... I don't know," Desiree admitted, her usual arrogance replaced by genuine concern. "Something's coming. Something that feels like... rage."
Tucker's PDA began emitting warning signals as multiple security systems activated simultaneously. "These readings don't make sense. It's like something's pushing against our defenses, but not from any direction I can track."
"The wishes..." Desiree's form flickered slightly. "Something's interfering with them. Not breaking them, but... bypassing them somehow."
Samael felt it then - a pulse of pure fury that resonated with his own rage. Different from his ghost sense or Hulk-like anger, this felt ancient. Primal.
"Everyone stay alert," he commanded, moving to a defensive position. "Whatever this is-"
"The emotional spectrum readings are spiking," Jazz reported, checking their modified sensors. "Specifically in the rage frequency."
"The what frequency?" Danny asked, floating closer to the group.
"Remember those articles about the Lantern Corps?" Tucker explained quickly, his fingers flying across his PDA. "Each color represents different emotional energy. Green for willpower, blue for hope..."
"And red," Sam finished grimly, "for rage."
A crimson glow began seeping through their defenses, ignoring both ghostly barriers and wish-enforced shields. The warehouse temperature dropped as Desiree's power strained against this new force.
"Impossible," she hissed, her form becoming more corporeal as she channeled more energy. "No power should be able to penetrate wishes this strong!"
The red light coalesced in the center of their sanctuary, forming a ring that pulsed with malevolent purpose. It hovered there, as if studying them, before a voice emanated that seemed to bypass their ears and speak directly to their rage.
"Samael Fenton of Earth," it intoned, ancient and terrible. "Your anger burns bright."
"Master," Desiree started, raising her hands to cast another wish, "perhaps I should-"
"Your rage echoes across realities," the ring continued, cutting through her words. "A fury that rivals the Red Lanterns themselves."
"That's not good," Tucker muttered, his PDA sparking from the energy readings. "That's really, really not good."
"You have great rage in your heart," the ring declared, moving closer to Samael despite Desiree's attempts to contain it. "The power to burn worlds."
"Samael," Jazz called out warningly, "don't let it-"
But the ring had already made its choice. It shot forward with impossible speed, attaching itself to Samael's right hand before anyone could react.
"Welcome to the Red Lantern Corps."
The transformation began immediately. Blood erupted from Samael's mouth as his heart stopped, replaced by burning plasma that coursed through his veins like liquid fury. The warehouse trembled as three distinct powers - his Hulk-like rage, ghostly energy, and the Red Lantern's fury - collided within him.
"Master!" Desiree actually sounded concerned, her usual sarcasm forgotten. "I wish to-"
"NO!" Jazz interrupted. "Any wishes right now could interact catastrophically with the ring's power!"
Danny went ghost, positioning himself between the transforming Samael and the others. "Everyone back! The energy readings are-"
"OFF THE CHARTS!" Tucker shouted over the growing maelstrom of power. "It's like his rage is feeding into the ring, but the ring is also amplifying his anger, creating some kind of feedback loop!"
Crimson light mixed with ghostly green as Samael's form began to shift. His usual Hulk-like transformation warped, taking on aspects of a Red Lantern's armor while maintaining its massive proportions. The warehouse's reinforced walls groaned under the pressure of contained power.
"The emotional resonance is unprecedented," Jazz observed, still taking notes despite the chaos. "The ring's rage-based power combining with his existing anger-driven abilities..."
"LESS ANALYZING, MORE EVACUATING!" Sam called out, grabbing Tucker's arm as another wave of energy pulsed outward.
"RAGE." Samael's voice carried otherworldly power, deeper than his usual Hulk-form's growl. "BURNING. CONSUMING."
"His consciousness is fragmenting," Desiree reported, her ancient power allowing her to sense the transformation's true depth. "The ring's influence battles with his ghost core while his protective rage tries to maintain control!"
Red plasma spewed from his mouth as he roared, the sound carrying enough fury to make even Desiree flinch. The ring pulsed with increasing power, drawing on generations of stored rage.
"We need to contain this!" Danny shouted, creating an ecto-shield around his brother. "Before he-"
"RAGE OF RED LANTERN," Samael's voice boomed as crimson energy shattered Danny's shield. "FURY OF GHOST AND HULK! ALL BURNING AS ONE!"
"Oh, this is bad," Tucker muttered, his PDA finally giving up and dying from power overload. "This is really, really bad."
The warehouse ceiling suddenly burst open as a figure in green descended, his ring's emerald light cutting through the crimson chaos.
"Well," Hal Jordan's voice carried practiced casualness despite the situation, "this is new. Don't usually see Red Rings choosing half-ghost rage monsters."
"The Green Lantern?" Tucker's voice cracked with equal parts awe and panic. "How did he-"
"Ring detected an unauthorized Red Lantern induction on Earth," Hal explained, assessing the situation with experienced eyes. "Though I have to say, your security measures are impressive. Almost flew right past this place."
"GREEN LANTERN," Samael's transformed state focused on the new arrival, crimson plasma dripping from his massive jaws. "WILL NOT INTERFERE!"
"Yeah, about that," Hal created a complex series of constructs around Samael, trying to contain the expanding power.
"Red Rings tend to be pretty fatal to normal humans. Of course," he grunted as Samael shattered his first containment attempt, "you're not exactly normal, are you?"
"The ring's power is interacting with his existing abilities," Jazz explained quickly. "Creating some kind of cascading effect with his ghost core and rage-based transformation!"
"A ghost-powered, Hulk-like Red Lantern?" Hal created another barrier as the previous one crumbled. "That's... definitely not in the training manual."
"If I may," Desiree floated forward, her ancient power rippling, "perhaps a wish could-"
"NO!" Multiple voices shouted simultaneously.
"Adding more supernatural power to this mix?" Hal reinforced his constructs as Samael's fury grew stronger. "That's probably not the best-"
His words cut off as Samael's combined powers shattered his latest containment field, sending the experienced Lantern flying backward.
"RAGE BURNS!" Samael roared, his massive form now wreathed in both crimson energy and ghostly fire. "ALL WILL BURN!"
"Okay, Plan B," Hal created a massive construct hand, grabbing Samael before he could react. "Let's take this somewhere with less collateral damage!"
"Wait-" Jazz started, but Hal was already ascending, dragging her transformed brother into the night sky.
"LANTERN NOT TAKE HULK FROM FAMILY!" Samael's roar shook the air as they climbed higher, his massive form struggling against the emerald restraints.
"Trust me, kid," Hal grunted with effort, his ring straining against Samael's combined powers. "Your family will be safer with you away from Earth until we figure this out."
They broke through the atmosphere, Hal's ring protecting them both as they entered the darkness of space. Usually, this would be where someone like the Hulk would start weakening from lack of oxygen - but the Red Ring had other ideas.
"RAGE NEEDS NO AIR!" Samael's massive form expanded further as the ring's power sustained him. "RAGE BURNS IN DARKNESS!"
"Yeah, that's what I was afraid of," Hal muttered, creating more complex restraints as his first ones began to crack. "Any chance we could talk about this? Lantern to Lantern?"
Samael's response was to unleash a blast of combined red plasma and ghostly energy that shattered Hal's constructs like glass.
"I'll take that as a no."
A familiar whoosh announced Superman's arrival, the Man of Steel assessing the situation quickly. "Hal? Is that-"
"Remember that half-ghost kid with anger issues?" Hal created a shield just in time to block another energy blast. "Well, now he's got a Red Ring. And apparently, his ghost powers combined with Lantern energy make him a lot harder to handle in space."
"I noticed," Superman dodged a massive green fist wreathed in crimson fire. "His strength seems to be increasing exponentially."
"SUPERMAN TOOK HULK FROM FAMILY BEFORE!" Samael's transformed state grew even larger, his fury feeding the ring's power while the ring amplified his rage. "NOT AGAIN!"
"Last time, we had gravity and oxygen deprivation working in our favor," Hal explained, trying to contain Samael's expanding form with increasingly complex constructs. "But the ring's keeping him powered up out here."
"Then we need a new strategy," Superman replied, watching as Samael effortlessly tore through another of Hal's restraints. "Before his rage draws more Red Lanterns to Earth."
"RAGE BURNS BRIGHTER!" Samael's massive form pulsed with increasing power, the Red Ring feeding off his bottomless fury while his ghost core adapted to channel more energy. "HULK STRONGEST ONE THERE IS!"
"You know," Hal created a series of giant boxing gloves that Samael swatted aside like toys, "usually that line works better when you're not glowing red and spewing plasma."
Superman attempted to flank Samael, but a combination of ghostly intangibility and Red Lantern energy made contact impossible. "His molecular structure keeps shifting. I can't get a solid grip!"
"SUPERMAN THINK HE STRONG?" Samael's transformed state somehow grew even larger, his voice carrying through the vacuum of space. "RING MAKES HULK STRONGER! GHOST MAKES HULK UNTOUCHABLE!"
"He's not wrong," Hal admitted, watching his most powerful constructs shatter against Samael's fury. "The ring's rage is amplifying his existing strength, while his ghost powers give him abilities most Red Lanterns don't have."
A blast of crimson energy mixed with ghostly fire forced both heroes to dodge. The nearby satellite array sparked and twisted as Samael's power warped local space-time.
"We need to end this before-" Superman started, but was cut off by a roar that actually managed to carry through the space:
"HULK NOT END! HULK PROTECT! RAGE BURNS FOR FAMILY!"
"Wait," Hal's ring picked up something in Samael's energy signature. "His rage pattern... it's not just blind fury. There's purpose behind it."
"Purpose or not," Superman dodged another massive fist, "he's getting stronger by the second. And if his anger draws the attention of other Red Lanterns-"
"LET THEM COME!" Samael's declaration was punctuated by an explosion of power that sent both heroes tumbling through space. "HULK SMASH ALL WHO THREATEN FAMILY!"
Superman and Hal regrouped at a safer distance, watching as Samael's transformed state continued to grow in both size and power.
"His energy readings are off the charts," Hal reported, his ring struggling to analyze the combination of Red Lantern power, ghostly energy, and rage-enhanced strength. "And they're still climbing."
"We need the League," Superman decided, dodging another blast of crimson plasma. "All of them."
"YES!" Samael's roar carried impossible power as his massive form blazed with red and green fire. "BRING ALL! HULK SHOW LEAGUE TRUE STRENGTH! TRUE RAGE!"
The satellite network around Earth began to warp and twist as his power expanded further, reality itself bending under the pressure of his combined abilities.
"Hal," Superman's voice carried rare urgency, "tell me that's not what I think it is."
"If you think it's a rage-powered ghost-enhanced Hulk about to tear a hole in space-time?" Hal created another futile barrier as Samael's power continued to build. "Then yeah, that's exactly what it is."
Samael's transformed state grew impossibly larger, his fury radiating across the cosmos like a beacon. And in the distance, multiple points of crimson light began appearing - drawn by the pure rage of their new brother.
"FAMILY WILL BE SAFE," Samael declared as space itself started to crack around him. "NO MATTER WHAT BURNS!"
To be continued...
