As the Hulk in Danny Phantom/DC/Young Justice

Chapter 33: Brothers of Light

The silence of space carried an electric tension as the Red Lanterns approached in tactical formation, their crimson light casting long shadows across the debris field.

"Okay," Hal's ring tracked their movement patterns, "we've got seven angry party guests, including the big man himself. And they're actually using strategy, which is... new."

"They're containing our escape vectors," Superman observed, positioning himself to counter their formation. "Atrocitus didn't build a Corps on rage alone."

The massive Red Lantern leader moved with predatory grace, his eyes fixing on Samael with ancient fury barely held in check. "You dare claim mastery over the Red Light? Over rage itself?"

"Mastery?" Samael's ring pulsed with steady power. "No. I just figured out how to make it work for me instead of the other way around."

"BLASPHEMY!" Skallox surged forward, plasma spewing from his maw. "THE RING DEMANDS-"

"Silence," Atrocitus's command cut through his subordinate's rage. "The boy's ring... it accepts this method. Most... curious."

"Great," Danny's blue energy mixed with his ghost powers as he floated beside his brother. "We've gone from 'kill the heretic' to 'dissect the specimen.' That's... progress?"

"Your attempts at humor do not change facts," one of Atrocitus's lieutenants spoke, his voice carrying calculated menace. "This alteration must be studied. Contained."

"Yeah, about that," Samael's ring flared with controlled crimson light. "Not really interested in being anyone's lab rat."

"THEN WE TAKE YOU!" Another Red Lantern roared, only to be silenced by Atrocitus's raised hand.

"The choice," their leader's voice carried millennia of focused rage, "is not yours to make."

"Actually," Danny's Blue Ring pulsed brighter as his ghost energy swirled, "that's where you're wrong. See, I've recently kind of got this thing about people trying to control my brother."

"And I," Samael's power rose steadily rather than explosively, "have this thing about protecting mine."

Wonder Woman's grip tightened on her lasso as she watched the powers build. "By Hera, this will be a battle worthy of song."

"Or," Hal added dryly, "the kind that leaves really interesting craters."

The battle erupted with violence as Atrocitus led the charge, "Take the blue one first! Hope cannot be allowed to stabilize this aberration!"

"Wow," Danny phased through a blast of red plasma while returning fire with combined ghost rays and blue energy. "For a guy running on rage, you're surprisingly strategic."

"STRATEGY IS IRRELEVANT!" Skallox charged forward, only to be caught in one of Samael's precisely crafted constructs.

"See, that's your problem," Samael's voice carried newfound clarity as he contained the raging Lantern. "You think rage has to be chaotic to be powerful."

Superman engaged two Red Lanterns simultaneously, "Hal! Their formation is splitting!"

"Yeah, noticed that," Hal created a series of barriers, working to contain the battle's scope. "They're trying to separate the kids. Can't have rage and hope working together, right?"

"RAGE IS PURE!" Another Red Lantern attacked Danny, only to find himself fighting both ghost powers and blue energy. "HOPE IS CORRUPTION!"

"Dude," Danny went intangible as crimson constructs passed through him, "you seriously need to workshop these lines. Even the Box Ghost has better material."

Atrocitus's massive form crashed into Samael with focused fury. "Your control cannot last. The ring WILL consume you!"

"That's the thing," Samael matched his power with precise application rather than blind rage, "I'm done being consumed by anything."

Wonder Woman's lasso snared one of the Red Lanterns as Doctor Fate's mystic barriers contained another.

The space around Earth's orbit had become a battlefield of light.

"You know," Danny called out while dodging another attack, "this is definitely going in Jazz's thesis on family dynamics!"

"ENOUGH!" Atrocitus's power suddenly expanded, his rage focused into a precise blast that forced everyone back. "This ends now. Dex-Starr! Bleez! Execute Pattern Sigma!"

Two Red Lanterns broke formation, their attacks coordinated with disturbing precision. Dex-Starr - looking for all the world like a housecat wreathed in crimson energy - moved with liquid grace while Bleez attacked from above.

"Did... did that cat just create a tactical containment field?" Danny blinked, his blue energy straining against the surprisingly complex construct.

"Focus less on the angry space cat," Samael deflected another of Bleez's strikes, "more on not getting caught in their- oh."

Too late, they realized the pattern. The Red Lanterns weren't just attacking - they were herding them into a specific position.

"NOW!" Atrocitus's ring flared with ancient power as crimson energy began to swirl around the brothers. "Show them true rage's embrace!"

"Uh, guys?" Danny's voice carried concern as red light started to compress around them. "Little help here?"

Superman shot forward but was intercepted by three Red Lanterns moving in perfect sync. Hal's constructs shattered against the concentrated power while Wonder Woman's lasso couldn't penetrate the growing sphere of red energy.

"The containment field," Doctor Fate observed, his mystic senses probing the effect, "it's designed to amplify rage while suppressing hope. Most... elegant."

"Really not the time for academic appreciation!" Danny strained against the field, his ghost powers and blue energy fighting the increasing pressure.

Samael's ring pulsed as he fought to maintain his control. "They're trying to force the rage to overwhelm me. To make the ring work like it 'should.'"

"Good luck with that," Danny managed through gritted teeth. "You're the most stubborn person I know. Besides Jazz."

"True," Samael's voice carried something that made Atrocitus's eyes narrow - not defiance or rage, but absolute certainty. "And you know what else is true?"

The crimson sphere began to pulse as Samael's power shifted, his control never wavering.

"Nobody," his ring flared with concentrated purpose, "tells me how I SHOULD be."

The containment sphere shattered as Samael's controlled power met Atrocitus's rage head-on. But instead of the explosive release they expected, his energy moved with surgical precision.

"Impossible," Bleez hissed, watching her leader's technique be turned against him. "The Red Light cannot be-"

"Can't be what?" Danny's blue energy merged with his ghost rays, creating paths of hope through the crimson storm - dimming their rage with it slightly, constantly. "Controlled? Focused? Because my brother's doing a pretty good job of proving otherwise."

"RAGE IS CHAOS!" Skallox charged again, plasma spewing. "RAGE IS-"

"Getting really repetitive," Samael caught him in a construct that matched Atrocitus's own technique.

"You know what real rage is? It's knowing exactly what want to do, but can't. I've had to live with that for these past couple months, and it has given me quite the perspective."

Dex-Starr moved with feline grace, his small size belying the complexity of his attacks. But even his precise constructs found themselves redirected, turned aside by controlled fury rather than shattered by it.

"Your technique," Atrocitus observed, genuine curiosity mixing with his rage, "it mirrors our own. Yet you claim to reject our ways?"

"I reject letting rage control me," Samael demonstrated by containing another of Bleez's attacks without destroying it. "Not learning from it."

"THE BLUE ONE CORRUPTS HIS MIND!" One of the lieutenants snarled. "HOPE WEAKENS-"

"Oh for- seriously?" Danny went invisible to avoid another blast. "Have you MET my brother? He's literally the most stubborn person in two dimensions. Nobody 'corrupts' his anything."

Superman used the distraction to break through their formation while Hal created new containment fields. Wonder Woman's lasso snared Bleez as she tried to regroup.

"The boy speaks truth," Doctor Fate's voice carried mystic certainty. "His mastery comes not from rejection of rage, but from understanding it."

"Understanding leads to control," Samael demonstrated by redirecting another of Atrocitus's attacks. "Control leads to choice."

"And having choice," Danny added, his blue light strengthening, "leads to hope."

Atrocitus suddenly raised his hand, calling his Corps to halt. His ancient eyes studied Samael with newfound consideration.

"Your rage," he spoke with grave certainty, "it echoed across the cosmos. When you first took the ring, every Red Lantern felt it. A fury so pure it made our own souls roar in recognition."

The other Red Lanterns backed away at their leader's gesture, though Dex-Starr maintained a watchful position near his master.

"And yet," Atrocitus continued, "you choose a different path. Not weaker, as we first thought, but... divergent."

"The rage is still there," Samael confirmed, his ring pulsing steadily. "It's just not in control anymore."

"Indeed." A sound that might have been a laugh rumbled from Atrocitus's chest. "Centuries of existence, and a child shows us new possibilities."

"To be fair," Danny floated closer to his brother, blue light mixing with the crimson glow, "he's got a lot of practice being stubborn when it comes to norms."

"We will withdraw," Atrocitus declared, though his eyes remained fixed on Samael. "This... evolution deserves observation. Let us see where this path leads."

He raised his ring in what might have been a salute. "Know this, Samael Fenton. Though you walk a different road, you will always have a place among us. Your rage sang with a voice that will echo in our memories for millennia to come."

"Thanks... I think?" Samael responded, earning another rumbling almost-laugh from the ancient being.

"Come," Atrocitus commanded his Corps. "We have much to contemplate." He paused, looking back one final time. "And young one, do not forget - controlled or not, rage can still be a worthy companion."

As the Red Lanterns departed, Danny nudged his brother. "So... does this mean we're done with space battles for today? Because I promised Jazz we'd be back for dinner."

"Speaking of which," Hal created a construct-screen showing Earth below, "you might want to check your phones. Tucker's sent about thirty messages in the last five minutes."

"Oh man," Danny groaned. "Jazz is going to make us process this emotionally, isn't she?"

"Better than trying to explain to Mom and Dad why we're wearing color-coded space jewelry," Samael replied dryly.

Well, at least things will never be boring with a life like this.
