Chapter 165: Chapter 165: Tsunade’s Orders — Kakashi and Obito’s Conversation
For a moment, the atmosphere in the office was thick with despair. Faced with a crisis like this, how could anyone not feel hopeless?
But just then, Naruto seemed to come to a realization. The gloom that had clouded him lifted, replaced by unwavering determination. He raised his head.
"No matter what happens, no matter who the enemy is—I won't let them get their way!"
His words carried a strange power, pulling everyone out of their emotional slump as if by magic.
Tsunade was the first to snap back to focus. She quickly issued her commands.
"That's right. No matter what, we're shinobi—we fight to the very end. We can't let the fate of the shinobi world fall into their hands!"
"I'm giving orders now. Jiraiya, get to the hospital immediately and start treatment. You need to be back in fighting shape within three days."
"Yes, ma'am!" Jiraiya could hear the concern behind her command and smiled as he accepted it.
"Kakashi, go to the memorial stone and find Uchiha Obito. Try to get more information out of him."
"Understood," Kakashi replied. He'd been wanting to talk to Obito anyway.
"Naruto, head to Mount Myōboku and begin training in Sage Mode. We need you ready to face Hyuga Gakuya."
Naruto nodded vigorously. "I'll master Sage Mode for sure!"
"Good. And don't lose communication with the Nine-Tails. Tell him this: the Ten Tails plan hinges on capturing him. If he doesn't want to become part of the Ten Tails, he needs to work with us."
That was one of Konoha's key predictions. When the Akatsuki tried to capture the Three-Tails, the jinchūriki of the Five-Tails—Han—had struck a deal with his beast at the last moment and achieved perfect jinchūriki status.
Konoha's think tank had analyzed the situation: the Tailed Beasts didn't want to be absorbed into the Ten Tails either. They were more likely to cooperate with their hosts to unleash their full power.
Naruto thumped his chest and promised, "Don't worry, Kurama's already agreed. If the Akatsuki come for us, we'll fight them together. I believe in him."
Inside Naruto, the Nine-Tails growled in frustration at both the threat and the nickname.
"Those damned Senju... Hashirama was bad enough, but his granddaughter's just as annoying! And you—stop calling me Kurama!"
"Got it, Kurama." Naruto gave his stomach a pat, then activated Reverse Summoning and vanished on the spot.
Once Naruto was gone, Tsunade nodded in satisfaction.
"Shizune, send out the recall order to all shinobi currently on missions. And inform Kumogakure—the Six-Tails has been captured by the Akatsuki. They need to brace for a potential attack. Only the Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails remain now."
"Also, send a request for aid to Sunagakure. Notify Kirigakure too. As a gesture of goodwill, share the intelligence we've gathered so far."
"Understood." Shizune nodded firmly.
Of all the shinobi villages, Konoha's strongest ally was Sunagakure, so Tsunade naturally thought of Gaara first when calling for support.
"I'll go talk terms with that old fox Ōnoki myself," Tsunade muttered. The last thing she wanted was to deal with the grumpy Tsuchikage, but she knew exactly what would happen—he'd make outrageous demands without caring about the fate of the world.
Still, there was no other choice. The shinobi world was on the brink. They needed allies.
...
Kakashi arrived at the memorial stone, where a lone figure stood in silence, staring at a gravestone inscribed with the name Nohara Rin.
"It's been a while, Obito," Kakashi said as he walked up, hands in his pockets, standing beside him.
Obito didn't look at him. "We've seen each other plenty. That stab in my chest? That was from you."
His tone was sharp, with a trace of bitterness. There was resentment in his words.
After all, if Kakashi hadn't struck that blow, maybe he wouldn't have been killed by Hyuga Gakuya.
His own plan might have succeeded. He could have replaced Gakuya, become the Ten Tails' jinchūriki, revived Rin, and created the perfect world.
But instead, here he was—just another pawn at Gakuya's disposal.
Kakashi's suppressed emotions threatened to break loose. He couldn't understand Obito's actions.
"A stab? If it were up to me, I'd have killed you myself."
"That way, the Obito who once said, 'Those who abandon their comrades are worse than scum' would be the only version anyone remembered."
There was fury in Kakashi's voice—an emotion he hadn't shown in years. This Obito, standing before him now, felt like a stranger.
"If Rin knew what you've done... she would never forgive you."
Obito's body trembled, his mask hiding the agony that flickered across his face. He shouted,
"You've got no right to talk about Rin! She's dead! You killed her! This world had no place left for her!"
Everything he had done was built on the Eye of the Moon Plan. But Gakuya had revealed the awful truth: it was all a lie.
That meant everything Obito had done until now had been meaningless. Worse, it meant he had become a true villain, with no excuse.
Kakashi took a deep breath, regaining his composure.
"When I've fulfilled my duty, I'll leave this world and seek Rin's forgiveness."
"But you? Everything you've done will be etched into the pillar of shame. Rin will never forgive you."
Obito's eyes widened in fury. He glared at Kakashi.
"You're wrong! Everything I did—I did for her! To create a world where she could live again!"
Kakashi responded coldly,
"Then you've only created more pain, more death. If Rin were still alive, she'd never want to see what you've become."
He took another breath and pressed on.
"Obito, it's not too late. Turn back now. Help us fight the real enemy. You might still have a chance to make things right."
Obito went silent, slowly calming down. He raised his head.
"So, this is what it's really about. All that talk of forgiveness and redemption—just a ploy to squeeze information out of me?"
"You're so transparent, Kakashi."
In truth, Obito wanted to believe Kakashi. He wanted to redeem himself.
But he couldn't. Any abnormal move he made would be noticed by Hyuga Gakuya—and then Rin's soul would never know peace.
That was something he could never allow. That would be the one sin he could never forgive himself for.
Just then, a fierce wind swept through the clearing, intensifying the tension.
Kakashi didn't say another word. He simply watched Obito, waiting for his final answer.
Obito placed a handful of bellflowers at the base of the gravestone. Then, without another word, he stood up and walked past Kakashi, their shoulders barely brushing.
