Beasts of Anomaly

Chapter 15: Chapter 15 : A Temporary Sanctuary

The group trudged onward through the rocky terrain, the faint glow of the crystalline trees slowly fading behind them. The battle had left them bruised, exhausted, and wary of the path ahead. The Shadow Stalker moved closely beside Azhaan, its sharp red eyes scanning the landscape for signs of danger.

Kaela paused at the top of a hill, gazing down at the valley below. "There," she said, pointing to a small cluster of buildings nestled in the shadow of a jagged cliff. "That's Stonebridge. It's a quiet outpost—far enough from the larger towns that we should be able to lay low for a while."

Azhaan squinted, barely able to make out the buildings in the fading light. "And you're sure it's safe?"

"As safe as anywhere else in Aetheris," Kaela replied. "At least for now."

Alira snorted, adjusting the pack slung over her shoulder. "It'll have to do. Unless you'd prefer to camp out here and wait for another wave of cloaked tamers?"

Azhaan shook his head. "No thanks. Let's go."

The outpost of Stonebridge was small but bustling with activity. Traders bartered at makeshift stalls, adventurers gathered around campfires sharing stories of their exploits, and beasts of all shapes and sizes moved through the narrow streets alongside their tamers.

Azhaan followed Kaela and Alira through the crowd, trying to blend in as much as possible. He couldn't help but feel exposed, the weight of his bond mark burning faintly beneath his sleeve.

"We'll need supplies," Kaela said, her tone brisk. "Weapons, food, and a place to stay. Alira, can you handle the food?"

"On it," Alira said, disappearing into the crowd with her plant beast trailing behind her.

Kaela turned to Azhaan. "Come with me. We need to find you something better than that dagger."

Azhaan hesitated. "What about the Shadow Stalker?"

"It'll follow," Kaela said, nodding toward the beast. "And it'll make sure no one gets too close."

The Shadow Stalker let out a low growl, its eyes scanning the crowd. Azhaan felt a pulse of reassurance through their bond and followed Kaela into a nearby shop.

The shop was cramped and filled with racks of weapons, from simple swords to ornate staves adorned with glowing crystals. The blacksmith, a burly man with soot-streaked arms, looked up from his workbench and raised an eyebrow.

"New adventurers?" he asked, his voice gruff.

"Something like that," Kaela said, motioning to Azhaan. "He needs a weapon. Something sturdy but versatile."

The blacksmith stroked his beard, eyeing Azhaan critically. "You look like you've never held a blade in your life."

Azhaan bristled. "I'm learning."

The blacksmith chuckled. "Well, let's start with something simple." He pulled a short sword from the rack and handed it to Azhaan. "Lightweight, easy to handle. Good for a beginner."

Azhaan gripped the hilt, testing the weight. It felt more balanced than the dagger he'd been using, and the blade gleamed faintly in the firelight.

"It'll do," Kaela said, tossing a pouch of coins onto the counter.

As they left the shop, Azhaan glanced at the sword, a small spark of confidence flickering in his chest. "Thanks," he said to Kaela.

"Don't thank me yet," she replied. "You'll need to prove you can use it."

That evening, the group gathered in a small, rented room above an inn. The Shadow Stalker lay curled near the door, its watchful eyes keeping vigil. Kaela and Alira sat by the window, going over a map of the region, while Azhaan leaned against the wall, his new sword resting at his side.

"So," Azhaan said, breaking the silence. "What's the plan?"

Kaela tapped the map. "We'll rest here for a day or two, but we can't stay long. The cloaked tamers will be looking for us, and they're not likely to give up easily."

Alira nodded. "We need to keep moving. If we can get to Skyreach Spire, we might be able to find answers about your mark and the bond system."

Azhaan frowned. "Skyreach Spire? Isn't that the academy for tamers?"

"It's more than that," Kaela said. "It's a hub of knowledge—lore, history, everything we need to understand what's happening to you. But it's also dangerous. The spire is controlled by guilds, and not all of them will welcome someone like you."

"Someone like me?" Azhaan repeated.

"Someone with an unconventional bond," Alira said. "They don't like tamers who break the rules."

Azhaan sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Great. So, no matter where I go, I'm either a target or an outcast."

Kaela's expression softened. "You're not alone in this, Azhaan. We'll figure it out. But we need to be smart—and fast."

Azhaan nodded, the weight of their words sinking in. The road ahead was dangerous, but he wasn't the same scared rookie who had stumbled into Aetheris. He had allies, a growing bond with the Shadow Stalker, and a determination to uncover the truth.

Whatever lay ahead, he was ready to face it.
