Became Pregnant With the Demon King’s Child

chapter 68

"Why are you laughing?"

Felix ◆ Nоvеlіgһt ◆ (Only on Nоvеlіgһt) asked even though he already knew the answer, clearly embarrassed. Lowell wiped a tear from the corner of his eye.
"Why are you doing it yourself? If you liked the taste when you tried it earlier, I could’ve just made it again for you."
Of course, Lowell knew full well that Felix wasn’t doing this because he liked spicy pork stir-fry. He’d barely eaten a bite earlier, then drank a mountain of water—anyone could tell it wasn’t to his taste.

"You seemed to really like it, so I wanted to make it for you. I watched you cook today, from start to finish, closer than anyone—so I figured I’d be the best one to replicate it."
"If I want to eat it, I can just make it myself anytime."
"To think I couldn't even get what you wanted and made the pregnant one cook for himself—how powerless does that make me?"

Lowell didn’t know what book Felix had been reading, but clearly it was one of those where husbands get schooled on how to treat their pregnant partners. Rather than say he didn’t have to go that far, Lowell decided to taste the product of Felix’s efforts.
I shouldn’t come off like I’m scolding him.
Looking at the clumsily reddish stir-fry, Lowell opened his mouth.

"Is it finished?"
"I think so, but it doesn’t taste like the one from earlier."
Felix glared down at his creation like it was some kind of enemy. From Lowell’s perspective, he’d probably used less sauce out of fear of it being too spicy, but he chose not to point that out.

"It looks good to me. I’m excited to try it."
It was clearly under-seasoned, but Lowell wanted to taste it exactly as Felix had made it. If he started tweaking it, it wouldn’t feel like Felix’s dish anymore.
"Really?"

Felix raised an eyebrow, suspicious. But the moment he saw Lowell’s earnest, innocent face, all his doubt faded.
"I had something strong for lunch, so something milder for dinner sounds good."
Lowell received a plate from a servant and carefully transferred the stir-fry Felix had made. Unlike Lowell, Felix had spent the entire afternoon struggling in the kitchen, so the cooks hadn’t been able to prepare anything else. Rice, meat stir-fry that barely qualified as 'spicy pork,' a hastily made soup, and a salad were all that sat on the ducal dining table.

The head chef had tried to at least grill some fish to round out the meal, but Lowell declined.
"Will just that be enough?"
"Of course. I’m really looking forward to it."
Lowell placed the lightly orange meat atop his rice. Spotting a slightly burnt piece, he discreetly covered it with rice so Felix wouldn’t see.

"Bon appétit."
Felix picked up his spoon, but didn’t eat. He just stared at Lowell’s mouth with a tense expression, as if he were an artist awaiting judgment on his first masterpiece. The sound of Lowell chewing and Felix’s thundering heartbeat filled the room.
"It’s delicious. There’s barely any heat, but it’s sweet, and the fat-to-lean ratio is great. Mild and clean—perfect for dinner."

Felix knew Lowell’s review was too generous. When he’d tasted it himself, the stir-fry had been awkward, not quite sweet or salty or spicy—just confusing. But through Lowell’s mouth, it became mild and balanced.
"If it doesn’t taste good, you don’t have to force yourself to eat it."
"It really is delicious."

Wondering if the flavor had improved after sitting for a while, Felix tried another bite with his fork. But no, it tasted the same—mildly strange.
"Didn’t we promise not to lie to each other?"
Felix, hand half-covering his mouth like he wanted to spit it out, shot Lowell a betrayed look.

"Okay, if we’re being objective, it’s not some gourmet dish. But to me, there’s nothing better. I’m not forcing it down, so don’t worry."
If it had been truly inedible, Lowell would’ve pretended to eat for the sake of his health. But it was just… odd. Nothing he couldn’t handle.
"You mean that?"

"If you don’t want to eat it, just give it to me. I’ll finish it."
Lowell scooped up a big bite of meat and rice. His cheeks puffed up as he chewed, clearly enjoying himself—not faking it in the slightest.
"Fine. I’ll eat too."

Instead of giving his portion to Lowell, Felix took another bite. Maybe it was because Lowell was smiling so happily across from him, but it somehow tasted a bit better this time.
"Make it again next time."
It was the happiest meal they’d had together so far.

***
"I’m going to roll around at this rate."
Stuffed from both lunch and dinner, Lowell panted like a kitten that drank too much milk. It was sweet to see him eat so well, but also pitiful to watch him suffer from overeating.

"Should we take an early walk?"
"That’d be great."
Lowell jumped up, clearly waiting for the suggestion, and quickly got ready. After Felix gave him a once-over, they stepped outside, and the cold wind rushed against them. Once Lowell wrapped his scarf around his mouth, the chill became more bearable.

"It feels even colder now."
"Nyx is always coldest this time of year. If it gets too hard, we can take a week-long trip somewhere warmer. Just say the word."
"I’ll be fine if I dress warmly. But I think it’d be nice to go on a trip sometime—just the two of us. Touring other territories could be fun."

At the mention of a trip, Lowell’s voice lifted half a pitch. Felix chuckled softly and nodded.
"Not sure a trip with me would be fun."
"Going with you is what would make it fun."

Felix thought even Lowell’s breath, misting with each word, was adorable. He quietly began thinking of possible travel destinations.
"Anywhere you want to go?"
"Hmm… I think I’d be happy wherever we went."

Lowell had read plenty about Nyx and the capital’s surrounding regions, but hadn’t had the energy to research ideal vacation spots.
I doubt Felix knows much about travel destinations either, but he’s got to know more than me.
He waited expectantly for Felix’s answer.

"There’s a town between Nyx and the capital where the seasons are vivid. In spring, the flowers are beautiful enough for a festival, and in autumn, the leaves turn brilliant colors."
Lowell nearly burst out laughing at how much it sounded like a Korean travel ad.
"That sounds amazing."

"I’ve never been myself, but they say it’s a great place to visit. Might be a good first trip."
"Our first trip?"
Felix’s eyes widened at those words.

"Then we’ll go on a first trip, a second, and a third."
It was exactly what Felix wanted to hear—and what Lowell wanted as well. Felix had never had anyone to travel with. Lowell had never had a proper partner or friend to go on more than one trip with.
"Yeah."

Felix answered briefly, his cheeks flushed in the dark. Lowell wasn’t so clueless that he missed the joy packed into that single word.
They walked in silence for a while, until Lowell’s face slowly darkened.
Did I really eat too much?

Though his body was weak, he’d never had trouble digesting—no indigestion, no bloating. But for the first time, he felt uncomfortable.
Maybe it was the spicy food? But it wasn’t even that spicy. It’s not pain, but… it’s bothering me.
At first, Lowell thought it was nothing worth mentioning. But then he reconsidered.

No point hiding it if it’s really nothing.
He stopped walking and tugged gently on Felix’s hand. Felix turned toward him, puzzled.
"Felix… I think my stomach feels a little off."

Felix’s face went paler than Lowell’s. Even in the darkness, you could see the color drain.
"It’s not bad enough to say I’m sick. It just feels a little different than usual, so I thought I should tell you. We promised to be honest about my condition, right?"
Lowell waved his hands quickly to reassure him, and some of the color returned to Felix’s face—but not all.

"Let’s go to the priest right now."
He let go of Lowell’s hand and immediately scooped him into his arms. Since Lowell had been the one to admit he felt unwell, he couldn’t really protest. He just obediently let himself be held.
Felix cradled him into a stable position and sprinted for the castle at full speed.

It’s impressive—he’s running this fast, and I barely feel a bump.
Lowell marvelled calmly, nestled in his arms. Thanks to Felix’s speed, they reached Taishi’s prayer room in no time.
"Taishi!"

The priest, just finishing his prayers and heading back to his room, turned in surprise at Felix’s voice.
"Lowell said his stomach feels off. I’d like you to check if anything’s wrong."
