Chapter 8: Chapter 08 – Chizuru Ichinose 03
"Are you seriously saying you want me to help you in your daily life?" She pressed further.
"Exactly!" Akira replied, nodding enthusiastically. "Like, you know, helping me clean my room... maybe even making dinner for me."
"What!?" Chizuru's face twisted in shock and displeasure as she leaned forward, nearly slamming her hands on the table. "Are you seriously asking me to be your housemaid?!"
Akira, seemingly unfazed by her reaction, smiled brightly. "Well, when you put it that way, it sounds kind of harsh. I'd call it more of a mutual partnership. I'll handle the manga work, and you take care of, uh, the 'supportive tasks.'" He added air quotes to emphasize his point.
"Yeah, you might not understand, but I've got a lot of projects I want to work on. It's tough to take care of myself properly, so I really need someone to help out," Akira added, trying to sound earnest. "You'd only need to come to my apartment once a day to tidy up, make dinner, and help with small tasks like that."
This proposal wasn't just about convenience for Akira; it was a calculated plan. By ensuring he met Chizuru daily, he could gain more rewards from his cheat abilities. He recalled how simply holding Chizuru's hand—something completely non-romantic when they do it—had triggered a reward. If his cheat ability worked the same way, eating food prepared by Chizuru or interacting with her in other ways could lead to even greater gains.
"Huh? Do you seriously think I'd agree to something like that?" Chizuru shot back, her expression a mix of disbelief and irritation. She hadn't expected such a bold and self-serving request, and it was clear from her tone that she found the entire idea absurd.
"Of course, I'll cover all the expenses—travel costs, groceries, and anything else you might need," Akira added, trying to sweeten the deal. "And to be honest, while I'm not successful yet, I promise that if I do make it big one day, I'll help you with anything I can or grant any request you have, as long as it's within my power." His words sounded ambitious, even grandiose, but he was being sincere. However, it all hinged on one thing: his eventual success. Right now, Akira was nothing more than a beginner without even a manga publisher to back him.
He watched Chizuru's face twist into a mix of doubt and frustration, clearly struggling to process his bold proposition.
"Ugh, I'm starting to feel like I should post a message on the campus bulletin board," he muttered under his breath, his tone exasperated.
However, with just one word from Akira, Chizuru found herself unable to resist.
"Ugh, fine. I'll do it," she relented, her voice heavy with frustration. It was clear she felt cornered by his persistence.
"Great! I swear, you won't regret this decision," Akira replied with a grin, completely unfazed by the fact that he had essentially pressured her into agreeing. To him, her feelings on the matter were secondary.
Deep down, Akira didn't care much about how Chizuru currently viewed him. Sure, if he could win her over like in the fanfictions he'd read, that would be ideal. But for now, in his eyes, Chizuru was a tool—a means to an end, a way to bolster his own strength and further his goals.
With Chizuru's agreement, the two of them left the family restaurant and made their way to Akira's apartment, located just one station away from their college. His apartment was in an old, modest two-story building. Unlocking the door to his unit, Akira stepped aside and invited Chizuru in.
Chizuru hesitated at the threshold, her reluctance stemming from the unusual situation. Entering the private space of a man who had once been her client as a rental girlfriend felt strange and a little daunting. After all, this was her first time setting foot inside the personal space of someone from the opposite sex.
The small apartment featured a kitchenette and a door leading to the bathroom, opening up into the main living area. As Chizuru cautiously stepped inside, her gaze was immediately drawn to the scattered papers strewn across the room. While the mess wasn't as chaotic as she'd feared, it still gave off an impression of mild disorganization, with certain areas noticeably untidy.
"As you can see, my room's a bit of a mess," Akira admitted with a sheepish grin, gesturing toward the scattered papers. "I'm juggling several projects right now—one of which is Rent-a-Girlfriend, though it's honestly the last thing on my mind. I'm currently working on three manga simultaneously. Ah, I was hoping you could help me out with all this…"
He handed Chizuru three sheets of paper, each featuring drafts inspired by Rent-a-Girlfriend, Oshi no Ko, and Shokugeki no Souma.
Akira went on to explain the differences between the manga he was referencing and his own creative spin on them. Then, shifting gears, he began describing how he managed to keep his room relatively tidy, including the challenges of cooking in such a small apartment.
"The most important thing," he emphasized, "is to prepare your meals for the entire day—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—in one go. That way, I can just warm them up when I need to."
He scratched the back of his head, a hint of embarrassment in his tone as he added, "Ah, I'm probably going to make a mess while working on this manga, so I'll need you to help organize my drawings. I'll show you how to tidy everything up as we go."
Chizuru felt overwhelmed as she held the pages of Akira's drawings in her hands. As someone aspiring to become an actress, she was genuinely amazed by the sheer volume of work Akira had poured into his craft. Each page reflected countless hours of effort, and she couldn't help but admire the dedication of the eighteen-year-old. The realization of how much hard work it took to create all these pages made her pause.
Although Chizuru had initially felt resentful about being "forced" to come to Akira's apartment, her feelings shifted upon witnessing his passion and determination. As someone a year older than Akira, she felt her resentment melting away, replaced by a budding sense of admiration. She couldn't deny that she now wanted to encourage this young man in his efforts to succeed.
"Hah… fine. I'll help you," Chizuru sighed, finally agreeing to the arrangement she had made with Akira.
"Well, that's great! I promise I won't tell anyone about your job," Akira reassured her, a hint of excitement in his voice. "You also don't have to worry—I'll cover the costs for shopping. But I do expect you to handle some of it and maybe prepare meals for me too."
With that, Akira made it clear to Chizuru what her responsibilities as his temporary assistant would entail.
