Chapter 15: Chapter 15
Sam then started to create the enemies and bosses of DMC3. Cerberus, Agni and Rudra, Nevan, and Beowulf.
Sam concentrated as he began imagining the formidable bosses that would challenge Dante throughout his journey. He started with Cerberus, the three-headed guardian of the underworld gates.
Visualizing the massive, icy beast, Sam poured his energy into shaping its towering frame. He gave each head a distinct personality - one with a fierce, snarling maw, another with glowing red eyes that seemed to bore into the soul, and the third exuding an aura of chilling frost. Sam imbued Cerberus with the ability to command ice and frost, creating a truly daunting adversary for Dante to face.
Sam turns his attention to Agni and Rudra. He notes their design, which features a curved support holding a series of backward-pointed segments, each with a rear-sloping cutting edge. This creates a fierce, serrated appearance reminiscent of a spinal cord. Agni is colored orange to represent fire, while Rudra is turquoise for wind. However, the cutting edges of the blade segments are bare metal, and the guard, grip, and pommel of both swords are made of gold. Talking heads are mounted at the ends of the pommels, and both swords have simple, round guards.
Transitioning to the next boss, Sam focused on the haunting, vampiric demoness known as Nevan. He envisioned her elegant, yet unsettling appearance, with flowing red hair and a figure that exuded both grace and danger. Sam imbued Nevan with the power to manipulate electricity and sound, her electric guitar serving as a deadly extension of her abilities.
He could picture the pulsing rhythms and chilling melodies that would echo through the halls of Temen-ni-gru, luring Dante into a deadly dance of lightning and sonic disruption. Sam knew that facing Nevan would require the Hunter to be at the top of his game, his reflexes honed to perfection.
Sam focuses on the primal warrior, Beowulf. The demon is massive, a chimera of mismatched parts. Its head, torso, and claws resemble a lion's, with one eye missing and a curved horn. Talons replace its feet, and four wings can unfurl from its back. Though it has a scorpion tail, Beowulf does not use it in battle.
As he worked, Sam imagined the clash of fists and the shockwaves that would reverberate through the arena, forcing the Hunter to rely on his agility and tactical precision to overcome Beowulf's overwhelming might.
Sam paused, surveying the formidable bosses he had created. Each one represented a unique challenge, demanding that the Hunter employ a diverse array of skills and strategies to emerge victorious. Satisfied with his work, Sam began to fine-tune the encounters, ensuring that the battles would captivate and push the limits of the Hunters who would step into this digital world.
Sam then started creating the demons in the simulation.
Sam visualizes the Lust demon. They are grey, humanoid creatures that resemble jesters in their attire. Donning a distinctive red, jester-like outfit instead of bandages or a cloak, the Lusts wield massive scythes which they use as their primary weapons.
Sam shifts his focus to the grotesque Gluttony. They are grey, humanoid demons that bear a certain resemblance to the Grim Reaper from popular folklore, but with a few key differences. Instead of the classic black cloak, they don the color of envy - a deep, forest green. And rather than wielding the traditional scythe, these creatures brandish sharp, double-bladed staffs. The green bandages wrapped around their legs complete their unsettling, otherworldly appearance.
Sam watches as the Greed demons emerge. They are grey, humanoid creatures that remind him of medieval torturers. Their bodies are covered in tattered black clothes, and masks conceal their eyes and noses. Each Greed carries a massive torture device, an "Iron Maiden," which they wield as a weapon.
Sam then crafted the lumbering form of Sloth. They are very tall humanoid demons who appear to have burned skin, with a noticeable dark, brownish tone. The creatures wear long white cloaks and white bandages that cover their head and limbs, the bandage on their heads concealing their eyes entirely.
Sam visualizes the Wrath demon. They are tall, dark-skinned humanoid creatures with abnormally long arms. Their bodies are mostly naked, save for some black bandages and a black, leather-like mask that covers their face, revealing only one eye and their sewn-shut mouth.
The Envy demon takes shape next. It has no visible skin, with its muscles and flesh exposed. The creature is completely naked, except for some bandages wrapped around its limbs and body, and a strange-looking mask covering its face.
Sam visualizes the Pride demon. They are grey, humanoid creatures that resemble the Grim Reaper from folklore. The Prides wear dark cloaks and black bandages on their limbs. Each one carries an enormous scythe, which they use as their primary weapon. Their bodies appear to be impaled by several large blades, adding to their ominous and unsettling appearance.
With the 7 Hells complete, Sam moved on to the enigmatic Enigma - a demon that thrived on uncertainty and confusion. He sculpted a shifting, abstract form that flickered in and out of existence, its very presence designed to disorient and trap the Hunters.
Sam then brought the Damned Chessmen to life - a group of demonic entities that mimicked the movements and tactics of a chess game. He carefully crafted each piece, from the commanding King to the swift Queen, ensuring that their coordinated attacks would challenge the Hunters' strategic thinking.
Next, Sam envisioned the Blood-goyle, a nightmarish fusion of stone and demonic flesh. He gave the creature a towering, gargoyle-like appearance, its stone wings capable of generating devastating gusts of wind to batter the Hunters.
As he worked, Sam could almost hear the flapping of the Blood-goyle's wings and the howling of the wind it summoned, creating an environment that would test the Hunters' agility and resilience.
Sam visualizes the Arachne, a terrifying spider-demon hybrid. Their bodies are a nightmarish blend of human and arachnid features. Each one has a vaguely humanoid torso, but their lower half is that of a massive, multi-legged spider. Bladed forearms extend from their bodies, resembling the deadly claws of a praying mantis.
The smaller Arachne have a blue and white coloration, while the larger, more powerful variants are a deep green. Sam notices the segmented abdomens, each section a different hue.
Sam paused, taking a deep breath as he considered the next demon to create. The Dullahan, a headless knight wielding a massive scythe, took shape under his skilled hands. He knew this specter would demand precision and timing from the Hunters, its slow but devastating attacks a true test of their mettle.
Next, Sam visualizes the Soul Eater. The Soul Eater has a grotesque, serpentine form with a massive maw filled with sharp teeth. Its body is covered in a slimy, pulsating flesh, and its eyes glow with a hungry, predatory light. In its gas form, the Soul Eater appears as a blue-green mist, drifting through the air. Sam can almost feel the creature's ravenous energy as it slithers to close the distance between it and its prey.
Sam shifts his focus to the Fallen. They are flying demons with two pairs of snow-white wings folded over their bodies, with only the head sticking out. That head is fake—the demons' real faces are on their abdomens, and the wings are needed to cover them as an impenetrable shield, not for flight.
Sam visualizes the Abyss next. It truly resembles what in pop culture is understood as a "demon" - a tall, red humanoid with horns and a long, spade-tipped tail. Its body is not entirely red, but rather appears to be white, covered in large blood capillaries. The Abyss possesses three spike-like protrusions growing out of its back, and wields magical, fiery scythes that can regenerate the blade even after being thrown away.
