Chapter 10: Free Spoils
Lucian went to the shop Father Wilbur mentioned and bought several pairs of black stockings and a few pairs of white stockings.
Then, he bought some pastries and snacks for Anna, and left Therasis City.
The sun was shining brightly, the lush green forest's branches cast long shadows, and the calls of birds echoed through the trees.
Lucian walked towards Quain Town, with Anna following beside him, carrying a bag of pastries. She ate as she walked, her mouth covered in white pastry crumbs.
"Master, are you tired? I can carry you."
Beasts were stronger than humans. Anna blinked her large, sparkling eyes, seeing Lucian sweating profusely, and thought of carrying him back to Quain Town.
"No, how can a man let a girl carry him?"
Lucian refused her kind offer and walked back by himself.
"Alright."
Anna secretly glanced at his handsome face out of the corner of her eye. She was less than a meter from him, and her long black cat tail behind her was wagging, intentionally or unintentionally brushing against his arm.
Some cats were aloof, while others were very clingy.
Lucian noticed Anna's little actions; Anna clearly belonged to the clingy type of cat.
Just then, the pair of slightly forward-tilting cat ears on her head twitched, hearing a strange sound nearby.
"Master, did you hear anything?"
Lucian stopped, cocked his head, and listened. In the forest, there was only the sound of wind blowing through leaves and birds chirping. "What sound? I didn't hear anything."
The cat people's hearing was more sensitive than humans'. Anna pointed to the forest to the east, "There's a scream over there."
"A scream?"
Lucian was stunned for a moment. Monsters often appeared in the wild forests. He guessed someone was attacked by a monster. He would see if he could help; if he could, he would, otherwise he wouldn't.
He led Anna towards the forest to the east.
After walking over five hundred meters into the eastern forest, the screams could be heard clearly from this position.
Continuing further east, after walking over a thousand meters, the screams became even more distinct, and the smell of blood filled the air.
Crossing through the dense forest, Lucian and Anna hid behind some bushes and looked ahead.
Hundreds of green-skinned, ugly goblins were attacking a human merchant caravan. They had round bellies, were only as tall as seven or eight-year-old children, and carried crude, self-made bone weapons.
A single goblin's combat power might not have been strong, but the goblin species excelled in sheer numbers, often fighting in groups.
The merchant caravan suffered heavy casualties after encountering the goblin attack.
Their eyes gleaming with bloodthirsty ferocity, the goblins brandished their weapons and pounced like hungry wolves on the remaining caravan guards.
A dozen or so guards stood with their backs against a carriage, protecting it in the middle, holding swords and resisting the charging goblins.
Fighting valiantly, the caravan guards killed and wounded over a dozen goblins, but two fists are no match for four hands, and they gradually couldn't hold on.
One goblin leaped up, brandishing a bone knife, and fiercely stabbed it into a guard's throat. Blood gushed out like a fountain. The guard futilely clutched his wound with both hands, a gurgling sound coming from his throat, before he fell heavily to the ground, lifeless.
Another goblin, under the cover of its companions, used its sharp claws to slash open a guard's belly.
The guard's internal organs spilled onto the ground. He struggled in agony, screaming miserably, and gradually became still in despair.
The guards fell one after another into pools of blood. The ground was covered in human and goblin corpses.
When the last guard fell, there were still thirty to forty goblins alive at the scene.
Lucian and Anna lay hidden in a pile of grass in the distance, not daring to move. He certainly didn't want to provoke a large group of goblins.
These goblins were clearly not very intelligent. After killing the entire caravan, they only looted the food, human and horse corpses, and didn't meticulously search the carriages for valuables.
Of course, for goblins, gold and silver jewelry were also useless.
Lucian and Anna waited in the bushes for a while.
"Anna, have they gone far?"
Anna's cat ears twitched slightly, listening to the goblin's footsteps, "They've gone far."
"Let's go see if there's anything valuable in those carriages."
"Mm-hm."
Anna was very excited, hoping to find something valuable.
The two walked out of the bushes and approached the caravan.
This caravan had a total of six carriages. All the living people had died violently. The human and horse corpses were taken away by the goblins, leaving only blood everywhere.
Lucian jumped onto a carriage. Inside the carriage were several large boxes. He lifted the lid, and the large boxes contained old clothes.
He turned the old clothes inside out, but there was nothing.
He left this carriage and jumped onto another.
The second carriage contained boxes and boxes of porcelain bowls, iron pots, and other daily goods. These were probably items the caravan transported to Therasis City for sale.
These daily sundries held little appeal for Lucian. He shook his head in disappointment and walked towards the third carriage.
The third carriage contained some exquisite handicrafts, which Lucian was also not interested in.
After continuously searching three carriages and finding nothing of value, he couldn't help but wonder, could this caravan be a poor one?
"Master, come here and look!"
Just as Lucian was guessing, Anna's voice came from another carriage.
He jumped out of the carriage and entered the carriage where Anna was.
She was standing in front of a small red wooden box with exquisite patterns. The small wooden box was already open, and it was filled with sparkling gold coins.
"Holy crap, so many gold coins! We're rich!"
Looking at the gold coins in the box, Lucian's eyes widened in surprise.
Based on the size of the box, a rough estimate put the number of gold coins around two thousand.
The two-story wooden house Lucian currently lived in was church property, somewhat old, and had no garden.
With these gold coins, he could not only buy a small manor of his own but also continue to buy beautiful foreign female slaves.
In a great mood, Lucian put a box of gold coins into the system warehouse, intending to reward Anna handsomely.
"Thank you, Master."
Thinking of the delicious boiled fish Lucian made last time, Anna excitedly wagged her cat tail.
Ten minutes passed.
Lucian and Anna searched all six carriages thoroughly, but besides that box of gold coins, they found nothing else of value.
They continued walking in the direction of Quain Town.
By the time they reached the town, it was already dark.
Having walked all day, Lucian collapsed into a chair, his legs almost giving out, similar to running a thousand meters during a university physical test.
Anna lit a candle, and the candlelight illuminated the living room.
Then, she walked behind Lucian, placed her slender fingers on his shoulders, gently massaged him, and whispered into his ear, "Master, does this feel a little more comfortable?"
Lucian grabbed her fair wrist, and pulled her into his arms, wrapping his arms around her slender waist. "This is more comfortable."
Feeling Lucian's kindness, Anna leaned quietly in his embrace, her heart filled with peace.
[Anna's favorability towards the Host +10]
[Current favorability: 80/100]
Favorability increased once again.
Only 20 more points of favourability were needed to complete the system mission.
