Chapter 3: The Mysterious Turtle
After hours of trekking through the jade forest, Bunta and the bird were exhausted but determined. The trees seemed to close in around them, and the mana particles danced more intensely, as if guiding them toward something important.
"We must be close," declared Bunta, hopping over a gnarled root. "I can feel it in my legs. And my legs never lie. Well, except that one time they made me fall into a hole. But that was an exception."
The bird followed, a little out of breath but excited. "Do you really think this black stone is magical?"
"Of course I do!" replied Bunta with conviction. "Legends don't lie. Well, not all of them. Well, not this one. I think."
They continued on their way, chatting and laughing, until they emerged into a clearing. At its center was a small pool of crystal-clear water, reflecting the sunlight filtering through the trees. And there, resting beside the pool, was a black stone.
Bunta stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes wide. "There it is! The black stone!"
She rushed toward it, hopping with excitement. The bird, more cautious, approached slowly, eyeing the stone warily.
"Bunta, wait…" it began, but the frog interrupted.
"No, no, this is it! I can feel it! Look, it's glowing! Well, not really, but it looks… very black. That's a sign!"
She stopped in front of the stone, took a deep breath, and began reciting a solemn incantation:
"O great genie of the black stone, we greet you! We are Bunta the Frog and… uh… the Nameless Bird. We humbly ask you to grant our wishes. Well, mostly mine. But he's got one too. So… do your magic!"
She bowed dramatically, waiting for a response. Nothing happened.
The bird, feeling a little awkward, stepped forward. "Uh… I greet you too, O black stone. If you're truly magical, I… I wish to fly. And maybe, if it's not too much trouble, have a name."
They waited in silence, their eyes fixed on the stone. But nothing happened.
"Maybe we need to touch it," suggested Bunta. She reached out a foot and tapped the stone gently.
Suddenly, the stone moved.
Bunta jumped back, startled. "It moved! It moved! It's magic!"
But it wasn't the stone that had moved. A head slowly emerged from underneath it—a turtle's head. Its eyes, old and wise, looked at them with an amused expression.
"Hello," said the turtle in a calm, steady voice. "Looking for something?"
Bunta stared, open-mouthed, then burst out laughing. "A turtle! It was a turtle all along!"
The bird, meanwhile, was torn between surprise and disappointment. "Uh… hello. We were looking for a magical black stone. We were told it could grant wishes."
The turtle nodded slowly. "Ah, I see. Sorry to disappoint you, but this stone isn't magical. It's just my headrest. I like to lie here by the water."
Bunta laughed again. "A headrest! That's hilarious! So this whole quest was for nothing?"
The turtle smiled. "Not necessarily. You've found something far more valuable than a magical stone."
"What's that?" asked the bird, intrigued.
"A friendship," replied the turtle simply. "And a good story to tell."
Bunta thought for a moment, then nodded. "She's right, you know. We had a good time, even if we didn't find any treasure. And hey, we met a cool turtle. That's something."
The bird smiled. "Yeah, that's true. And I learned a lot."
The turtle looked at them kindly. "So, perhaps your quest wasn't in vain after all."
The three of them sat by the pool, enjoying the tranquility of the clearing. Bunta told the turtle about their adventures, exaggerating a few details to make the story more epic.
"And then, you see, I jumped over a ravine as wide as… as ten trees! And he almost turned into a featherball when he fell!"
The turtle listened, amused, while the bird chuckled shyly.
"You're an interesting duo," said the turtle. "Perhaps your real quest is just beginning."
"You think so?" asked the bird.
"Of course. The jade forest is full of mysteries. And you two seem to have what it takes to uncover them."
Bunta slapped the bird on the wing enthusiastically. "You hear that? We're born adventurers! Come on, next time we'll find a real treasure. And you, turtle, you coming with us?"
The turtle laughed softly. "No, thank you. I prefer my quiet little spot. But if you ever need advice, you know where to find me."
They stayed for a while, chatting, laughing, and enjoying the beauty of the forest. Even though their quest hadn't turned out as planned, the bird felt happy. It had a friend, a new acquaintance, and a whole forest to explore.
And somewhere deep inside, it knew this adventure was just the beginning of something much greater.
