Chapter 24: CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
The rhythmic bubbling of beakers and the faint scent of sulfur filled Ms. Evelyn's Chemistry lab. Sunlight streamed through the high windows, illuminating dust motes dancing above the focused students.
Cassia sat at her lab station, ostensibly observing the slow titration in front of her, but her mind was miles away, replaying the tense conversation in Jayden's study.
Flashback - Jayden's Study, Moments After His Admission:
Jayden hesitated, his gaze softening almost imperceptibly as he looked at Cassia's tear-filled eyes. He ran a hand through his perfectly styled hair, a rare display of his inner turmoil.
"Cassia," he began, his voice a low murmur, "what happened to Wren… it felt… unfair. The way everyone was piling on her."
He paused, searching for the right words, his gaze flickering away from hers for a moment before returning. "And… yes," he admitted, his tone carefully neutral, "I have noticed her. She's… different. She doesn't navigate this place the way… we do."
He avoided direct eye contact again, a faint blush rising on his neck. "There's a… rawness to her that's… I don't know… unexpected."
He finally met her gaze again, his blue eyes holding a hint of vulnerability. "It's not about replacing you, Cassia. What we had… that was real. This… with Wren… it's… I'm still trying to figure it out myself."
He offered a weak, almost apologetic smile. "Honestly, I don't fully understand it."
Cassia stared at him, her titration forgotten. Different? Raw? she thought, a wave of disbelief washing over her. That… scholarship girl?
His admission was hesitant, carefully measured, but it was there. He hadn't denied her observations entirely. He had acknowledged Louisa's presence in his thoughts, even if he couldn't fully articulate why.
"Jayden," she had said, her voice laced with a hurt that cut deeper than anger, "she wore my dress. Without even asking. And you… you're talking about her being 'different'?"
"She said it was a mistake, Cassia," Jayden had countered softly. "And she was clearly terrified of the consequences."
Terrified? Cassia's inner voice seethed. What about how I felt? Seeing her in something so personal? Something you gave me?
"So you feel sorry for her?" she had accused, her voice rising. "More than you care about how this makes me feel? The dress you gave me… you're defending the person who ruined it over me?"
Back in the Chemistry lab, Cassia's hand tightened around her stirring rod. The image of Jayden's fleeting vulnerability, his admission of noticing Louisa, replayed in her mind.
A cold knot of jealousy and resentment tightened in her chest. He had looked at that girl with a curiosity he hadn't shown her in months.
Across the lab, Louisa, Ellie, and Scarlett were diligently working on their experiment, their hushed whispers occasionally breaking the scientific hum. Louisa, however, found her focus wavering.
Jayden's unexpected defense in the hallway kept replaying in her mind. Why had he done that? He was part of their world, the elite who usually looked down on scholarship students like her. His intervention felt like a lifeline.
She glanced back almost subconsciously towards the usual corner of the lab where Jayden and his crew held court, a space now conspicuously empty. A frown creased her brow. His absence felt almost as strange as his actions earlier.
As her gaze drifted back to the slowly dripping burette of her titration, her eyes unexpectedly met Cassia's. Across the room, Cassia's dark eyes were fixed on her, not with the blazing fury of the hallway, but with a cold, calculating intensity that sent a shiver down Louisa's spine. There was a simmering resentment there, a silent promise of something yet to come.
Louisa quickly averted her gaze, her earlier confusion about Jayden replaced by a renewed sense of unease. The reprieve, she realized, was likely over. The real consequences were just beginning.
Cassia's gaze was still on Louisa, a flicker of something dangerous in her eyes. Different, is she? Raw? Cassia thought, a bitter smile touching her lips. I'll show you raw.

The aroma of simmering stew filled the small, cozy apartment in the Lower East Side. Louisa and her mom, Maria, were eating dinner under the one hanging light. Maria smiled, her face all kind and wrinkly from working hard.
"So, honey," Maria began, her voice soft, a hint of concern underlying her casual tone.
"The beautiful red dress… the owner, your friend… she wasn't too upset about the little… accident at the party?"
Louisa faked a smile, trying to look chill. Inside, her stomach was doing flip-flops just thinking about Cassia's furious face. "Nah, Mom. She was just a little ticked, you know? Friends get like that. But it's cool now. We talked." She avoided eye contact, focusing intently on the vegetables in her stew.
Maria's eyebrows went up a tiny bit. "Just a little? That was a really pretty dress, Louisa. Probably cost a lot, huh?"
"Yeah, it was… fancy," Louisa said, picking at a carrot. "But she understands. It was an accident, and I'm going to… take care of it."
She kept the details vague, the image of the ruined crimson silk and Cassia's demand for payment a heavy secret she couldn't bring herself to share with her mother.
They ate in silence for a bit, just the clinking of forks. Maria watched Louisa, looking proud but also a little worried. She knew Louisa was tough and always tried to handle things herself.
I'm a big girl, Louisa thought, telling herself for the millionth time. I can deal with this. Mom works her butt off. I'm not gonna stress her out. The lie felt gross in her mouth, even with the yummy stew.
The weight of the ruined dress, Cassia's anger, and the unsettling enigma of Jayden's intervention pressed down on her, a silent storm brewing beneath her forced smile. She was determined to face it alone, but she was also totally freaked out.
