Chapter 34: CHAPTER 34
The time came a few days later.
Everything was uneventful.
Except for the addition of the adorable Nilu to the family, everything else seemed the same as before.
In the room—
Kanbaru rubbed Nilu's head gently, seemingly deep in thought.
Kurosaki Masaki paced back and forth in front of him.
Kanbaru continued stroking Nilu, expressionless.
Masaki passed by again.
Kanbaru turned sharply to the side, locking eyes with Masaki's slightly nervous gaze.
"…Caught you."
"Sure enough, you're just greedy for my body."
"Yes," Masaki nodded solemnly, "I plan to rely on you for the rest of my life."
"But you'll have to pay a price."
"???"
Masaki tilted her head cutely, a literal question mark hovering in the air above her.
Just then, a breeze drifted through.
Carrying a faint fragrance, it fluttered through the girl's short orange hair.
The hem of her skirt lifted ever so slightly, revealing a stretch of pale thigh—enticing and unintentional.
Kanbaru's eyes involuntarily followed the motion.
Masaki's cheeks reddened. Though she didn't really mind in her heart, she still pressed the hem of her skirt down and huffed, embarrassed:
"What are you looking at?! Don't think I'm defenseless—I'm wearing safety shorts!"
Kanbaru rubbed his nose, somewhat regretfully. "I see… You really have grown up. You weren't like this before."
"???"
Wait!
Shihouin Yoruichi suddenly looked up at Kanbaru, ears twitching.
"Before?"
What did you do to your cousin before?!
Masaki's face flushed even deeper as her eyes widened, glaring at Kanbaru arrogantly—though the tips of her ears were burning red.
Yoruichi: "???"
Wait a second!
Why is she blushing?!
There's definitely something wrong with you two!
"Can you give me some of your blood?"
Kanbaru gently placed the sleeping Nilu aside and asked softly.
Kurotsuchi Mayuri was currently researching the Quincy—thoroughly and obsessively.
And any such research required detailed genetic data.
So Kanbaru had decided to provide a sample of genuine Quincy blood to the mad scientist.
"Is… Aunt Masaki's blood okay?"
Masaki asked cautiously, glancing at Kanbaru.
Kanbaru: "???"
Yoruichi: "???"
"Speak up."
"I've noticed it for a long time."
Suddenly, Yoruichi's tail stiffened as Masaki lifted her into the air.
"First of all, I never eat the cat food. And you never touch the expensive canned food I got just for you."
Well, I'm not a cat. Why would I eat cat food?
Yoruichi pouted internally and rolled her eyes.
"And then—one night I woke up in the middle of the night…"
Masaki's eyes narrowed.
"…and I saw you crawling into Kanbaru's bed."
Wait—she knew about that?
Hold on!
Why were YOU watching Kanbaru in the middle of the night?!
What were you planning to do?!
Yoruichi's brain momentarily froze, her composure cracking like glass.
"Sure enough, Blackie…" Masaki whispered, narrowing her eyes.
"You're not a normal cat."
My name is Shihouin Yoruichi.
Come on, repeat after me—Shi-hou-in Yo-ru-i-chi.
…Wait.
Am I exposed?!
As expected of his younger cousin—sharp instincts, razor intuition.
Yoruichi shot a glance at Kanbaru, then flicked her tail and asked, "Since when did you figure it out?"
Masaki raised her chin proudly. "Of course I—"
She stopped mid-sentence.
Her voice slowly faded away.
Her eyes widened as she stared in shock at the black cat in her hands, now speaking to her directly.
"I-it… it-it-it TALKED?!"
"Eh?!?"
"The cat just talked?!"
"This cat can talk?!"
"Kanbaru, there's a monster!"
Masaki shrieked and immediately dove behind Kanbaru, poking out from behind him cautiously to stare at Yoruichi.
"You really didn't know I could talk?"
Yoruichi frowned slightly.
Something about this didn't add up…
"How was I supposed to know?! I just thought you were… like, weirdly smart!"
Masaki clung tightly to the back of Kanbaru's clothes, trembling slightly.
Kanbaru: "…"
Yoruichi: "…"
So you didn't know anything?
Yoruichi sighed deeply and covered her face with one paw.
"Let go of me."
At that moment, Kanbaru began to move slightly.
"No, I'm scared…"
Masaki immediately clung to him tighter.
"I said, let go."
Kanbaru tried again, his voice slightly more strained.
"I won't! I won't!"
Masaki grabbed even harder, clutching him like a lifeline.
A vein popped on Kanbaru's forehead.
"Then stop pulling down my pants, idiot. They're about to fall off!"
There's playing around—and then there's pulling my waistband off. That's a different level!
"Eh?!"
Masaki's face turned beet red, only just realizing what she'd been tugging on.
How embarrassing!
"Just so we're clear, you can address me as Mr. Yoruichi."
What the hell is "Xiao Hei"? That's so absurd it hurts.
Yoruichi hopped up onto Kanbaru's shoulder, glaring directly into Masaki's eyes.
After a few tense seconds…
Masaki looked away guiltily, clearly afraid of this strange talking "cat."
Of course, aside from everything else.
"But you're obviously a girl!"
Masaki muttered under her breath, pouting.
Yoruichi's tail flicked hard.
Despite being in cat form, her face visibly darkened.
This girl… I swear I'll scratch her face off if she wasn't your cousin.
"If you weren't related, I'd have already stabbed her," Yoruichi whispered through clenched teeth.
"More importantly…" she continued, turning to Kanbaru again.
"After that incident, the Soul Society is definitely aware of you now."
After all, the recent soul burial training wasn't exactly subtle.
Kanbaru had appeared in front of multiple Shinigami and casually killed an Adjuchas-class Arrancar—a level that requires a Captain-class opponent to defeat.
It would be impossible for the Soul Society to overlook that.
Because what Kanbaru revealed in that battle…
…was unmistakably the strength of a Captain.
