Chapter 32: BUTZ: Chapter 32
A murmur of conversation rippled through the crowd; many were curious about Kyōraku Callum, who had been appointed to the 6th Seat upon joining the 4th Division.
However, most 4th Division members weren't particularly ambitious, so the reaction was relatively muted.
As Retsu Unohana and Kyōraku Callum entered the hall, the buzz of conversation immediately died down.
The 4th Division members held Retsu Unohana in high regard, but their gazes were drawn to the person behind her.
Kyōraku Callum's attire was unremarkable: a standard Shinigami uniform and an unadorned Zanpakutō.
However, everyone noticed the noble's insignia on his shoulder—a clear indication of his upper-noble status within the prestigious Kyōraku family.
Logically, an upper noble would typically choose the 6th Division, making Kyōraku Callum's choice unexpected.
While curious, no one dared approach him; the social gap created a significant barrier.
Retsu Unohana calmly moved to the raised platform, her gaze sweeping across the assembled members. Kyōraku Callum and Seinosuke Yamada stood on either side. Once she confirmed everyone's presence, she smiled gently.
"Yesterday, the 4th Division welcomed a new member, Kyōraku Callum! His Kidō skills were tested by Lieutenant Yamada Seinosuke, and he's been appointed to the 6th Seat."
While most members weren't overly concerned about the seating arrangement, Retsu Unohana, fulfilling her duty as Captain, offered an explanation.
After introducing Kyōraku Callum, she turned to the main topic, her left hand resting on her Zanpakutō, her expression growing serious.
"I believe you all understand the Seireitei's long-standing traditions. Though Kyōraku-kun has been directly appointed to the 6th Seat, he retains the right to request a seat-challenge for a higher seat.
Yesterday, he submitted such a request. Therefore, today's event includes not only a welcome ceremony but also a seat-challenge!"
Upon hearing this, Seinosuke Yamada felt a sense of foreboding. His cold gaze met Kyōraku Callum's calm and steady one, further unsettling him.
"Kyōraku-kun may challenge any member from the 5th Seat and above. Victory secures the challenged seat," Retsu Unohana stated, her gaze sweeping over the seated officers.
Some were nervous; others unconcerned. Unlike other divisions, the 4th Division had a more relaxed competitive atmosphere.
The power and status of seated officers were minimal; Yamada Hanatarō, the 7th Seat, held less authority than some ordinary members.
Certain squad leaders even held more power than some seated officers. Only the lieutenant position held significant authority.
Many realized this and focused their attention on Seinosuke Yamada, whose expression shifted between anger and uncertainty, his gaze darting around.
Retsu Unohana turned to Kyōraku Callum, speaking gently. "Kyōraku-kun, choose your opponent without hesitation."
Hearing this, Kyōraku Callum looked at Seinosuke Yamada, a smile spreading across his face. "Lieutenant Yamada, I look forward to our match!"
Seinosuke Yamada's face darkened; he remained silent. Retsu Unohana maintained her calm smile, showing no surprise. Seinosuke Yamada's departure was inevitable; she needed someone to replace him.
"Seinosuke, the 4th Division has its traditions," Retsu Unohana said. "In a seat-challenge, the challenged party may choose the method of combat. Kidō or standard combat?"
Seinosuke Yamada recalled Kyōraku Callum's impressive Kidō skills, his eye twitching. Even after years as lieutenant, he lacked confidence in surpassing this newly graduated Shinigami in Kidō.
"I choose standard combat!"
After careful consideration, Seinosuke Yamada made his choice. However, he noticed a strange smile on Kyōraku Callum's face.
Kyōraku Callum was genuinely surprised by Seinosuke Yamada's choice. If Kyōraku Callum had a weakness, it was Kidō. Yamada's avoidance of a Kidō duel suggested a surprising confidence in his other abilities.
Retsu Unohana shook her head in disappointment. As Captain, she knew Seinosuke Yamada's abilities better than anyone, but Kyōraku Callum's remained an enigma.
"Good luck, Seinosuke," she said, a hint of pity in her voice.
She stepped aside, leaving the platform for them, while instructing members to erect a Kidō barrier.
"Zanpakutō are permitted, but lethal attacks are forbidden," Retsu Unohana stated, her hand lightly resting on the barrier. "Begin."
The moment she spoke, Seinosuke Yamada launched his attack.
"Bakudō #21, Sekienton!"
Completely disregarding the spirit of the duel, Seinosuke Yamada aimed only for victory. To ensure success, he used Kidō while Kyōraku Callum was off guard.
Thick smoke instantly filled the barrier, obscuring visibility. Kyōraku Callum frowned; the Sekienton was clearly intended to mask an escape or a follow-up attack. Escape was impossible within the barrier, suggesting Seinosuke Yamada was confident in his attack.
Retsu Unohana, watching the smoke rise, showed her displeasure. As the first Kenpachi, she preferred open, straightforward combat. Seinosuke Yamada's actions revealed his true character.
Kyōraku Callum tried to sense his opponent's spiritual pressure, attempting to locate him.
"The rumbling chariot, the woven gaps, this thing has light gathered and divided into six!" Seinosuke Yamada's voice echoed from the red smoke. "Bakudō #61, Rikujōkōrō!"
Brilliant golden light tore through the red smoke, instantly imprisoning Kyōraku Callum, who'd remained in place.
"Hmph, arrogant brat," Seinosuke Yamada smirked, seeing the Rikujōkōrō take effect. "Now for the finishing blow! "Ye lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws!!"
Kyōraku Callum, feeling the constraint around his waist, remained calm.
"Is this your fighting style? Rather pathetic."
Seinosuke Yamada gritted his teeth. "You're already defeated, yet you dare boast! It seems you need a lesson!" He increased the spiritual pressure in his palm.
