POV of Emil

'The campaign in these lands is on the right track, every day we have been ambushing patrols of our enemies and they have no idea that they are killing them, as they think the war is about to end, but nothing could be further from the truth, we have been advancing at a fast pace conquering dozens of castles every day.'

With the success of this campaign, we again enjoyed the fruits of victory, the first few days we were only eating hard bread and crackers that we had to make ourselves, but not long ago, we have started to capture huge food reserves from our enemy and the commanders are distributing them among all of us so that we keep resisting the forced marches we have been making in the last seven days of campaign in these lands.

So eating fruits or fresh meat was quite normal for the moment, which was good, very good, my teeth were already hurting from so many rock-hard bread that could only be swallowed with some soup.

'The problem is the damn wretched heat, I don't understand how it can be so hot here, it's too much and considering we have to wear almost thirty kilos of armor, I'm sweating enough to have a swamp inside my armor and unfortunately, we can't take off our armor for being in immediate conflict zone, as my tercio was chosen by the scouts to help in the vanguard operations'

'And that's how I got here'

Lying on the ground covered by bushes and shrubs, waiting for the next enemy patrol to pass by to ambush them and kill all their members and, if lucky, capture some of their leaders alive.

'Shit, the damn ants are driving me crazy'.

''How much longer we have to wait captain, the fucking ants are eating me alive'' I said whispering to the captain.

''No shit, I've got ants up my ass, but we must keep waiting, the Finns informed us of a patrol that should be coming through here soon and we must be ready'' said my captain whispering

The Prussian group was a hundred men who were hidden among the vegetation that surrounded the road to Ciderhall, one of the new possessions of the Prussians.

The minutes continued to pass, and the soldiers continued to wait until a small group of soldiers is running up to the Prussian positions.

A group of four men came running towards us, it was obvious from the wolf's head on their helmets that they were Finns.

They joined our forces by hiding in the bushes with us.

''They are coming, fifty men are on their way, five horsemen, those are the first ones we must eliminate'' said a Finnish captain whispering

''Understood, prepare crossbows, they are coming'' said our captain to our group.

We started to prepare the crossbows by pulling the mechanism and securing the bolt for the battle that awaits us

''Remember everything against those on horseback, the rest can be chased by the hussars'' said the captain, again throwing himself on the ground.

When I finished preparing my crossbow, I followed the captain's example and again we threw ourselves on the ground to wait for the enemy forces.

Time passed and again I felt again the fucking ants walking through my body, but to my luck we heard the footsteps of the enemy group that was approaching.

The men of the patrol were watching the roads of their homeland, you could see in their faces that they were happy, since they should not accompany their lords to a siege and much less have to fight, they only had to watch the roads which are very peaceful because the presence of bandits almost does not exist.

Since in the reach bandits or highwaymen are very rare because being this land so fertile, it was easier and safer to dedicate themselves to farming than to risk falling victim to the men of the noble houses that rule this territory.

The men observed the landscape of the area, seeing fruit trees that emanated the sweet aroma of the apples planted in ciderhall the men continued marching, as they wanted to reach their destination as soon as possible so they could rest with a roof over their heads and not have to sleep in the open air.

But these men had not realized that they had entered the lion's den because they did not realize that they were completely surrounded.

I looked at the captain, he made us the signal, three, two, one now, with the hand

"FUR DAS VATERLAND" we all shouted to surprise our enemies.

"HAKKAA PÄÄLLE" shouted the Finns.

Quickly, I got up and knelt down and aimed my crossbow at the priority targets, the enemy horsemen who could escape when they were overwhelmed.

As I got my target in sight, I pulled the trigger that releases the mechanism and felt the force of the crossbow release.

'Years using this shit and I still can't get used to the kick it gives when it releases'.

The bolt flew towards its target hitting the enemy rider's plate armor, I saw how my bolt deformed his armor by the power of the blow, to be followed by several dozens of bolts that followed and turned the five riders into practice dummies.

I threw my crossbow to the ground and reached for my buckler and axe and began to move towards the enemies, who still did not know what was happening.

The Prussians came out from all sides leaving completely surrounded the soldiers of the patrol that although in a moment of desperation began to form a circle in order to fight their enemy.

Although without the direction of their leaders everything was rather slow and they did not manage to close ranks properly when the first Prussian soldiers clashed their steel against theirs.

My opponent was waiting for me to take the initiative, I raised my axe and tried to hit him in the face, but my enemy deflected my axe with his shield.

He was preparing to strike with his sword, but a Finn came screaming like a maniac and stuck the spear between his eyes practically piercing his skull with that attack

while I was watching what happened, I felt a blow on my neck.

'Uh shit, what happened?'

I turned and saw the face of a frightened young man who had hit me with a sword, the boy froze when I looked into his eyes.

I turned quickly, and with a powerful blow with my axe hit him in the jaw shattering his face, I saw how his teeth and his tongue flew out from the blow

I returned to focus on the group of soldiers who were forming a shield wall to defend themselves, but before launching myself into combat I heard the voice of the Finnish captain

''Surrender now, and your lives will be spared, resist and you will all die because our lord is just and merciful, he gives you this opportunity, to you, surrender'' shouted the Finnish captain in the local language on a horse.

I did not understand much what the Finnish was saying, since we have recently started to be taught this new language that we must learn so that there will be no problems of misunderstanding between our forces and the locals that we conquered.

But observing that the group of enemies who were determined to fight began to look at each other without knowing what to do.

And then some of them threw their spears, swords and shields to the ground as a sign of surrender.

Raise your arms, those who surrender,'' said the Finn.

And the enemy soldiers began to raise their arms and seeing how almost all of them began to surrender the rest who still wanted to fight decided to surrender since they were only a minority.

"Secure the prisoners and get their weapons away from them now" shouted our captain as he went to check the horses of our enemies.

I began to pick up the spears they had thrown to the ground, while my companions did the same with the rest of the equipment they had thrown to the dirt.

'Well this battle was easier than usual, we only had to kill about thirteen of them to make them surrender, other patrols resisted to the death'.

''Emil help me put the chains on these guys'' shouted Bertram.

I left the spears in a pile of the enemy team and went to help Bertram.

While I was going to help him I started to move my neck as it started to hurt from the blow I got at the beginning of the battle.

''what happened to you Emil, don't tell me you got the worst of it'' said Bertram looking at me.

''I got hit in the neck, nothing serious, it was with a sword but I still felt the blow'' I said as I grabbed the chains.

''hahaha, really?they are just kids. How was it possible that you got hit without you seeing it'' said Bertram laughing

''a Finn was screaming like a maniac and I lost my concentration'' I said as I put the chains on the prisoners' ankles.

''you almost got killed by a kid hahaha'' said Bertram

''no, he was paralyzed with fear when he saw that his blow just bounced'' I said as I continued working.

''well, in his defense, who doesn't get scared to death in their first battle, when you smell the blood and hear the screams'' said Bertram

''or when someone peed in fear at a cavalry charge, ha ha ha'' I said, looking at Bertram.

''Ah yes, beautiful moments Emil, beautiful moments'' said Bertram.

I need help to move this horse, his rider was still alive but I can't move him alone'' said our captain.

We finished chaining the prisoners' ankles and handed him over to a Finn, who started to lead him back to the camp.

We ran to help our captain, who was trying to move the body of a horse that had died because it had received some bolts.

''Well, help me, we have to do it fast'' said the captain.

Bertram the captain and I started to move the body of the horse to find a rider who had been trapped by his steed

''Are you sure he's alive captain, his armor is completely deformed by the crossbow bolts, his breathing is ragged, we probably broke his ribs and punctured a lung and his leg.... god the weight of the horse shattered it'' I said looking at the captain

''We would be doing him a favor if we killed him, captain'' said Bertram.

I felt a hand touch my shoulder pads and I almost jumped out of shock.

''But I need him alive, if only for a few moments, I have to ask him some questions ... ..... so I have to ask him questions and have a nice conversation, so throw him in the supply wagon and try to stabilize him and hand him over to the medics'' said the Finnish captain.

''Understood, anything else we should do'' said our captain to the Finn.

''you have done well, go back to your camp, for the moment there is no more patrol, so there is no need for your help for the moment, tell your superior to send another company to continue with the work'' said the Finnish captain.

When he finished talking to the captain he got on his horse and began to gallop towards the enemy territories that we had to conquer.

''shit, I don't like to receive orders from the Finns, but this is good news, we can rest our feet a little, so get everything ready, we are going back to the camp'' said the captain taking off his helmet.

We started moving the rider's body to one of our supply wagons and started bandaging his body, trying to cut the bleeding.

Good thing I'll be able to sit back down, as I have to watch out for this idiot bleeding to death.

After waiting a few minutes our company began to march back to our camp to get some rest after a victory.
