Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Foundations
Another sunrise in Wrenvale, casting golden light across fields still scarred by battle. But where once there had been smoke and ruin, now stood the beginnings of renewal.
Kael and Mira worked side by side, their focus sharp and steady. Together, they dismantled the remnants of the wooden fence and replaced it with something far sturdier: a ten-foot steel wall, molded from Mira's magic and positioned with Kael's precision.
She shaped the metal in smooth sheets and Kael teleported them into place, fusing each one into a seamless ring around the village.
The wall gleamed silver in the sun.
"Do you think it's too much?" Mira asked, brushing hair from her face.
"No," Kael said, smiling faintly. "I think it's the beginning of peace."
With the wall complete, they turned their attention to the villagers' homes.
One by one, Kael taught Mira how to craft simple bedframes—metal slats, sturdy legs, support beams. She picked it up quickly, her creation magic dancing between refined precision and artistic expression. In just hours, crude bedding was replaced with real furniture. The villagers were moved to tears.
But Kael had something bigger in mind.
"We need to finish the emergency shelter," he said, eyes already glowing with intent.
Beneath the village, where dirt tunnels had once served as makeshift lodging, Kael expanded the network. He dug deeper, faster, more precisely, carving out wide rooms and long, connecting corridors.
Mira followed close behind, reinforcing every surface with thick metal walls, forging a large central hall with a communal kitchen and heating stoves Kael had sketched the day before.
At the far end, Kael opened new tunnels that linked each house to the shelter, installing trapdoors with metal stairs that descended quietly into the safety of the earth.
"It's warm down here," Mira said, running her fingers along the reinforced walls.
"It'll stay that way," Kael replied. "In winter, it'll be their hearth. In danger, it'll be their shield."
By dusk, the work was done.
The village had changed.
Wrenvale had changed.
So had Kael.
As twilight fell and stars crept into the sky, Dalen approached with Mira's parents behind him. "It's time," he said softly.
Kael turned toward the wall they'd just built. "Already?"
"We've done what we can," Mira's mother said. "They'll rebuild now… because of you two."
Mira didn't speak, but she took Kael's hand.
He squeezed it gently.
In the morning, the village gathered to see them off.
Kael embraced Balen tightly. The man had been a father, a mentor, and a source of warmth Kael hadn't realized he needed.
"I don't want to say goodbye," Kael said, his voice thick.
Balen smiled and pulled a small box from his coat. Inside was a silver ring inlaid with pale-blue runes.
"For your mind," Balen said. "Boosts intelligence by fifty percent. You'll need it when you start making trouble at the academy."
Kael stared at the ring, heart aching. "I'll use it well."
Dalen and Balen shared a brotherly hug. "Proud of you, you know," Balen said.
Dalen arched a brow. "You finally admit it?"
"Just don't let it go to your head. You're still the second-handsomest twin."
Dalen rolled his eyes. "I'll try to live with the shame."
"And try to visit more often, not just when the world is at stake" Balen said. "I will" replied Dalen
With everything packed on the Velra, Kael climbed into the saddle. Mira joined him, glancing back at the village. The steel walls shone like a promise in the dawn light.
As they began their journey back to Velis, Kael looked ahead.
The academy awaited.
So did the future.
But as long as Mira was with him, he felt ready.
