Chapter 4: Decision
Lilith walked towards Class 2-C with determination. Her heels echoed sharply in the silent hallway, each step a statement of authority and resolve.
The soft light from the stained-glass windows cast dancing hues across the polished floor, but she paid no attention to it. Her crimson eyes were locked ahead, her mind focused on one person.
Arcurus.
'I will clearly tell him to not mess with us. I will pressure him if he doesn't obey.'
When she reached the door, she pushed it open—perhaps a little too hard. The metal frame clanged against the wall with a harsh sound. Even she slightly flinched at her own force. But she masked it well behind a calm, practiced cold expression.
'Calm down, Lilith. You can't let the enemy see your weakness!'
Inside the classroom, Her eyes instantly locked onto the lone figure sitting by the window—him.
She saw a boy fidgeting with his glasses mid-air, the lens slipping awkwardly as he tried to regain control. He glanced toward her and instinctively glared at the glasses as he put them on, annoyed that they almost fell.
But the moment he got a clear view of her—his body froze. It was subtle, almost unnoticeable, but she caught it. A faint jolt. His blank expression didn't change, but something in his posture told her: he recognized danger.
'What is this...'
She narrowed her eyes. She could barely feel anything from him. His aura was dull, like a fogged mirror. His spirit didn't react like others. There was no flare of excitement, no trembling nervousness, no trace of desire. Even his eyes—obscured behind messy bangs—felt distant, detached, guarded.
She walked up to him, her every step deliberate. She stopped in front of him, her shadow falling over his desk like a black curtain, and told him that she wanted to talk. Just that. A simple, expected request.
But instead of stammering, or giving her those sidelong glances filled with either fear or admiration, or even lust—the kind she had grown used to—he gave her something else.
Rejection.
He didn't even hesitate. Not a polite excuse or careful decline. No diplomacy. He shooed her away like someone finding a stray dog in their kitchen.
'What...?'
She blinked, unsure she heard right. She pressed harder, leaning in just slightly. Her crimson eyes locked onto his, searching for a crack. But all she saw was visible annoyance, frustration, and an almost pathetic desperation to make her leave—all of which he tried to mask behind his sheepish tone. And failed.
'He is a good actor I must say. But this must end here!'
Even though she felt the annoyance, frustration and desperation, she convinced her self that he was acting.
So, She pressed even more, unwilling to let go. And that's when it happened.
The things he said—
They weren't just dismissive. They were curses. At her. HER! LILITH!! The number one beauty of the Federation. The Royal Vampire. The pride of her bloodline. But not direct insults—no, it was worse. It was casual dismissal, disrespect disguised in dry words, like she was just a nuisance.
'...Did I just got cursed?'
It wasn't something she had ever expected to hear from a man.
Especially not from Arcurus.
To her, he was a careful opportunist. The type to smile politely and nod while scheming in the background. The kind of man who would do anything to secure power if given the chance.
But what she saw now shattered that image completely.
His actions didn't reflect ambition. They reflected genuine indifference.
Not the kind people fake to seem cool. The kind that came from someone who had truly given up.
It was baffling.
It was… terrifying, to say the least.
And for the first time in a long time, Lilith felt something in her chest twist in discomfort.
'What is going on? Why are things going out of expectation? This is not how I imagined it to be!! Why is he acting like this?'
Lilith was panicking a little. Things weren't going the way she had envisioned. He didn't fear her. He didn't desire her. Nor did he didn't care about anything related to her or her friends.
He cared more about the opinions of random students outside than her. More about preserving some pathetic thing called "peace" than standing next to someone of her status.
And for some reason…
That infuriated her more than any insult ever could.
'How dare he act like that! I will pull that mask off of his face. Hmph!'
Lilith's pride was hurt. Deeply. No one had ever brushed her off like that—no hesitation, no awe, no fear. Just blunt rejection. And worse, it came from him. That quiet boy in Class 2-C who looked like he didn't even belong in the same world as her.
'Just you wait, you hypocrite!'
The sting of it burned colder than fire. Beneath her blank, elegant mask, a storm churned.
Without a sound, she lifted her left hand. The black crystal on her spatial ring gleamed faintly.
From it, a ripple of space peeled open and a dark, rune-etched disk drifted out. It was an ancient artifact, one that shimmered with a gravity of its own. Suspended mid-air, it began to pulse as runes glowed across its curved surface.
She didn't hesitate. She willed the artifact to its limit. The world within a five-meter radius slowed down—or rather, everything outside that invisible dome accelerated beyond reason. The field in front of the school stilled.
Students mid-step became unmoving shadows. Time, frozen like a captured breath, though not actually frozen. But slowed to such speed that it seemed stopped instead.
Inside the dome, the air shifted. The weight of temporal compression set in, bending perception. Everything felt quieter, more hollow.
'Hmm, this should keep him from spiraling. Since he doesn't want other people seeing him with us.'
Lilith tested the edge of the dome with a flick of her fingers. Satisfied, she turned her focus back to the boy—Arcurus. He was by the window and was testing the effect with an eyebrow raised.
Maybe that was supposed to be expression of fascination? She couldn't tell. She was having hard time believing anything about the boy.
She tried again—told him everything. About her wish to test his skills, about the questions she asked, about the future that claimed he would be their leader.
And he still rejected it. Though not full out right rejection. That would have been better then this. He was trying to persuad her into excluding him from the party...
She couldn't comprehend it. People bent rules, spilled blood, betrayed kingdoms just to get close to her. And here he was, brushing off what should've been the greatest moment of his life.
Something about it unsettled her deeply.
On the surface, he acted meek. Polite. But beneath that—there was no desperation. No ambition. Only a calm that felt too firm to be fake. The more he spoke, the more it felt like he was carrying something far heavier than he let on. She couldn't shake it. Her instinct told her that he was hiding something.
'I'm sure of it! He is hiding something! The world law must have seen that!'
Her belief of the fact that he maybe hiding something.
So she pressed harder. Not with force—but with logic. With questions. With presence. Arcurus had Walked from the window and stood in front of Lilith, held out his hand.
'What...? What!?'
Her body froze. A sharp instinctive reaction jolted her spine. For a heartbeat, she thought he was trying something. Her mind screamed caution, her legs tensed to step back.
But what he said after that changed everything.
He claimed he couldn't cultivate.
'No way that's true. He must be hiding something. No way the world Law can be wrong.'
Her belief about World Law being always right solidified even more. She didn't take his hand. Seeing that he sat back on his desk.
She didn't believe it. Not at first. No one with dragon blood could be that helpless. She stared at his hand, still half-expecting some trick, some reveal, some hidden grin. She asked him the questions but his answer slightly changed her world view again.
'Are there even people who can't cultivate? How is that possible?'
She looked at Arcurus who was sitting with his head resting on his palm. The air was different. Something was different. Her heart started to beat faster. Her breathing fastened but she held back and tried to mention composure.
She never felt like this before. It was Arcurus's presence nor he was actively editing danger. But there was something else that made her feel this way.
Confidence.
If earlier it was slightly hidden by his poor acting, but now it was on full display. The certainty and Confidence that they were beneath him. And Lilith didn't feel offended at all. That was what bothered her. How could she, Lilith Nocturna Valemire, let others look down upon her?
Even though she wanted to do many things, But she couldn't do anything because she felt it. Not just her, but others as well. The certainty that they can't do anything to him made them hesitate.
'Why am I feeling like this?'
She couldn't understand why she was feeling this way even though Arcurus look weaker then a normal human.
'I was right. There is something about him that may have made the world Law choose him.'
She watched him sigh and explain why her claim is invalid. He held up his hand again. Telling her to check.
Still, she didn't take his hand right away. She hesitated.
And that hesitation annoyed her even more than his rejection.
But she grabbed his arm and channeled her energy and saw not only his Meriden paths were non existent, some part were missing all together.
'How can a person even be alive with meridians damaged to this extinct!?'
Her mind raced. Everything about him clashed—his supposed weakness, his refusal, his indifference to power. And the calm. That unbearable calm. Like nothing in this world could shake him. Like the very laws of the world could shift around him and he would just sigh.
She hated that most of all.
'What gives him the confidence? What does he have that makes him so fearless?'
She asked her self because it made her curious.
And Lilith Nocturna Valemire hated curiosity when it got the better of her.
As their strange conversation continued, she became more and more certain of one thing. This wasn't a leech, a schemer, or an actor. He was something else. A blindfolded storm. Dormant. Waiting.
And maybe even he didn't know it yet.
But she was going to find out.
Even if it meant questioning the world laws themselves.
Seeing her quite, Arcurus stood and told them to leave with a logical excuse. She took back the Time Haste. She nodded and walked towards the door to exit. She noticed that Arcurus's expression didn't change one bit.
Her friends followed quietly. After the door closed behind her Lilith felt as if an invisible weight have been lifted off of her chest. Her back was socked with cold sweat. Her limbs slightly numb. But outwardly she appeared the same, colder even.
Her heart was still beating against her ribs.
'Was I... scared?'
She didn't know what this unknown feeling was. But it wasn't fear. The students were coming up to there classroom. They entered their classroom as well. All Five of them sat together, near each other near the window seat.
"Let's keep that guy, he is interesting! Hehe!"
Suddenly Kaida said with a giggle. This little Destruction dragon had a neck for teasing people. And people like Arcurus was her main target.
"This isn't something I can decide just because you want it Kaida. We need everyone's approvel to do that. What do you think? Sylra, Aria and Nix?"
Lilith said. She was mostly back to normal now.
"Even though he could be dangerous if he became party leader as you say, but there is also these possibilities that he is someone extraordinay. We can't let other people take him."
Sylra said. Tue other two agreed.
"That guy sure is interesting, Nyaa~. I like him to be in our party. I want to see what gives him the confidence, Nyaa~hehe~."
Nix said with Some cute cat noise. Her tail swayed softly.
"Agreed."
Aria said. She didn't think much of this.
Lilith's thought for few seconds. By that time the whole class was full and their classmates greated them. But girls didn't care and just nodded.
"Alright. I will lat it be. But we must be careful. "
Lilith said. She looked out side the window. The morning sun light bathed the world. The morning class was about to begin. Everyone took their seats as the teacher arrived. But Lilith wasn't in the mood to focus.
Her mind were elsewhere. She couldn't understand the feeling inside her. It was unsettling. This kind of feeling was first for her. Lilith was absent minded today. But her expression was colder then usual. That pushed away pleven the people who came to just talk a bit.
