Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Sudden Deal
Althea's POV
I press the intercom and speak, "I am Althea. I came here for my tutor session with Randall."
I moved away and waited. The gate buzzed and opened, causing me to startle because I was expecting someone to open it or maybe a guard. Randall's mansion was not so far from the gate, but my eyes wandered around as I was captivated by how beautiful their garden was.
The massive fountain with a wolf statue captured my attention, and there are fish on it. I kept walking until I reached the door and knocked. Later on, a butler came out and let me in. Their mansion is wide, but I have another purpose for coming here and that is not wandering off.
"I'm not expecting you to come after what happened yesterday, so you surprised me."
I swirl around after hearing Randall's voice. He was wearing a plain white t-shirt and black cargo pants, he was barefoot while his hands were in his pockets.
"This is my job, Randall. Even though you hate seeing my ugly face, you don't have a choice. Besides, you are suspended for one week."
He motioned to the butler before marching on my way and passed me by. I turned to the butler, and he beckoned with his hand as if telling me to follow his boss. I run after Randall and follow him, leading me to the left part of the mansion. He paused and unlocked a room, and after that, I followed him inside.
The room was filled with books and the smell of old books reached my nostrils. This is my first time seeing such a marvelous room, especially since this room seemed created just for books.
"Never seen a library before?" He inquired.
I recover from amazement and face him, "No." I went to the couch and put my books down, preparing for our first lesson. "What subject do you want to start with?" I questioned.
"Do you trust your mother that she won't replace your dad?" Randall suddenly asked me that unrelated question.
I frowned, "That's not related to my job, Randall. Interviewing me is not even part of your job, so we'll start with the subject you don't get."
"My mother died a year ago, and I thought my father wouldn't find a woman who would replace my mom's position, but I was wrong. So, I'm asking you. Do you trust her?" He asked me once again.
I sighed because this man won't get off my back if I don't answer his question. "Is that even necessary?"
He crossed his arms and replied, "If you want to keep working with me, then it is."
"I don't know," I simply answered.
"I don't need a tutor, but my dad thought you could help me see things differently. I don't care if I have low grades, especially since people like me didn't give a damn about school. We need to cooperate and learn how to live with your race," he murmured.
"Why do you sound like you're not one of us?" I inquired, confused.
He grinned, "Because I'm not. Come with me." He rose and went to the wall, and then he pulled a book and revealed the secret door behind it.
Out of curiosity, I stood up and went to the room he entered. The hallway was narrow and after a few walks, I reached another room with screens on the wall. Randall turned to me as if he were telling me to come closer, and I did.
I looked at the screens, finding what was wrong until my attention was captured by something on the screen. I'm not ready for this.
"Why are you showing me this?"
"We can become a family if my dad and your mom end up in a serious relationship, which is not possible. Their connection is upsetting, and I don't want you to be part of my family or become my sister. A nerd like you has no place in my territory," he said. His words have traces of insults, but I didn't care about that.
I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. Her love life is none of my business, but seeing how my mom moved on quietly made me very disappointed. I felt like she was cheating on my father, even though he's already dead.
"I know we have a mutual feeling, Althea."
I confronted him and said seriously, "Yes. We can't become family. My dad just died two months ago before I graduated from high school, and now my mom is having a romantic relationship with your father? Our family can't be combined. This must be stopped—"
"No, Althea. You can confront her at the right time."
"When, huh? When your father already proposed to my mom? I hate you and you hate me, so what's the point of waiting for the right time?"
"This is why I have a proposal for you, Althea. We will stop our parents from getting to know each other, forming a bond that leads to marriage, and combining our families. We will ruin their relationship while it's not too late," he offered.
"How long have they been like this?" I pointed at the screen where I witnessed a disgusting scene. "How long have they had that kind of relationship?"
"One year."
My eyebrows met in disappointment. I scoffed, "Now everything becomes clear. She stopped visiting us one year ago when my dad started having signs of cancer, and this is the reason."
"We are not going to be family, Randall. I swear that in my father's grave," I vowed.
He extended his arm, proposing to close our deal. "I will do my part to ruin their relationship while you're doing your part. We have the same goal and we were going to end it before things got out of hand. Do we have a deal?"
I accepted it and nodded, "I accept. We can't live as a family. My mother can't marry your father, and I will do everything to stop that."
He shook our hands, "Then it's a deal, Althea."
My job is to help him get his grades back on track, but this sudden revelation made me agree with his deal. Randall is not the brother I wish to have, and I don't want us to be family. He made my college life worse than high school. On top of that, my mother is being unfair.
"Yes, Randall. It is a deal," I mumbled.
