Chapter 6: Building
After cleaning up, Aric took out the leather armor and put it on. It fit like a glove.
[Leather Armor: Increases defense by 20 percent, increases all stats by 1 point]
Aric read the buffs of the leather armor, and a wide smile formed on his face. He knew what a single stat point could do for him, so having one added to all stats was a big deal for him.
Aric looked at the box on the ground and then looked around. It was still night, but it seemed the sun had slowly started peeking over the horizon.
"I should get to work. I need to finish the house before tomorrow runs out."
Aric walked to the axe that he had left with the other wood tools. He picked it up and started cutting down another tree, one vastly bigger than the first tree that he had cut.
It took him about five minutes, and the tree came down, but no notifications came to him this time. It seemed he had passed the point where cutting trees gave him EXP.
After cutting the second large tree, his hands were a little sore, and the blade of the axe was barely digging into the tree, so he decided to get some gloves and go for an axe that was more expensive and of better quality.
[Gransfors Bruk Felling Axe]
[High-carbon hand-forged steel head
32-inch Hickory wood handle
1.5 kg]
[Cost: 500 gold]
Aric looked at the name of the axe. He was certain this was something from Earth. The image and everything shown was something he had definitely seen on Earth.
He could understand the first axe since it was a simple head and handle, but this one was definitely heavily fine-tuned and designed with the highest-grade technology. That wasn't something this world should have.
It made him come to the conclusion that the system could take anything from anywhere and sell it to him. Though that wasn't really an issue, it was a good thing for him, in fact.
"Purchase."
The axe appeared in front of him. Aric picked it up, walked to a tree, and with one swing, putting all his strength into it, the axe dug halfway into the tree.
Aric looked at it, shocked. He had almost cut down the whole tree with a single swing. A smile formed on his face. It was either this axe was crazy good, or he had more strength than the average human by a huge amount.
He pulled the axe out, and with two more swings, the tree fell to the ground. He moved on to the next tree and continued cutting and cutting until he had felled over a hundred trees by the time the sun was up.
He was shocked that no other animals came this way, though. He expected that the loud sounds would pull some toward him.
Since he had cut down enough trees, the next stage was processing them, and that was where the real task came.
A huge amount of sawing followed. He made planks of equal sizes until it was high noon, and he had stacked a huge amount of planks, but even then, he was nowhere near finishing processing the trees. However, he wanted to start the building already.
[2 strength points added]
[1 endurance point added]
After the grueling work, his strength and endurance increased, and that put a smile on his face. He went on to gather everything that he needed to start building, buying nails, glue, and more, and that came up to 500 gold.
Firstly, he looked for the most level area near the stream where he could start, and once he decided on the area, he picked sticks from the ground. With the blueprint in hand, he started marking out where the walls would be by stabbing the sticks into the ground.
He got his hoe and started clearing out the marked area, removing the debris, sticks, and leveling out the ground even more.
After this, he felt hungry, but he decided to not get food from the system. Rather, he bought three fishing rods and some fishing bait for just 100 gold. He set the fishing rods at the edge of the stream, hooked his bait up, and set them in the water.
He left the rods and walked back to his building. The house stood on a wooden foundation, and for that, he needed thick short planks. But because they were going into the ground, they needed to be treated very well.
Luckily, he bought some chemicals for treating wood. He sharpened the tips of all the wooden beams to enable them to enter the ground better. He used a piece of his former clothes, dipped it into the bowl that had the chemical, and coated all the wood.
He took all the pieces of wood to the place he cleared. He placed all the pieces at their marks and, using a wooden mallet, hit them a few inches into the ground one by one until all entered.
After that, he treated a lot of the long planks and got to work laying them out to create a good foundation on the beams he had hit into the ground. He nailed them all together, and that created a matrix of rows and columns, with little gaps in between.
After he was done, he got up on the foundation and started jumping, trying to see if it was strong enough. The wood was still wet, though, and that made it heavier, so it had higher elasticity as he jumped on them.
After the test and nothing broke, the next thing was to start laying up the walls. But according to the blueprint, he had to make sure he properly installed the corners first. After that, setting up the walls and the floors would be a lot easier.
So he started making the corners that everything would fit into. He carefully nailed them in perfectly, making sure they were stable.
