Chapter 220: King Of Shadows
One guard lunged forward, wildly spraying bullets like a madman.
Jax rolled to the side, firing from the ground, and dropped him with a precise shot through the thigh followed by two to the chest.
"They're splitting!" someone shouted.
"Cut them off!" came the urgent reply.
Malik vaulted over a metal crate, tackling one guard and slamming his head repeatedly into the floor.
Blood splattered in rhythmic bursts as bone cracked like kindling beneath his fists. He looked up, his face painted red with victory.
But more guards charged in!
Jax ducked behind a pillar, reloading smoothly and precisely.
He popped out, taking down two foes with quick shots to their temples before dropping low and sweeping another off his feet.
Without hesitation, he drove his knife down, spine severed in an instant.
Screams echoed through the chaos as panic set in.
"Who the hell are these guys?!" one guard yelled.
"Retreat! Retreat!" another cried out in desperation.
"Too late," Malik snarled, slamming yet another man into a pipe.
The metallic clang resonated ominously as his target crumpled like a paper doll.
The hallway leading to the basement was narrow and trapped.
"Claymores," Jax noted while crouching low. "These guys are pros; they're not amateurs."
"Doesn't matter," Malik replied coolly as he tossed a small EMP disc forward.
It detonated with a pop and flash of blue light, the traps shorting out instantly.
"Let's go get the kids!"
They descended into the sublevel with silent footfalls, ready for anything.
---
Meanwhile, Billy was bound, bruised, and furious; though gagged, his eyes were sharp with determination.
Across from him sat Kaia, sporting a thin cut on her forehead, fear etched across both their faces as they exchanged worried glances.
Suddenly, the door burst open!
Gunfire thundered through the air: Bang! Bang! Bang!
"GET DOWN!"
Jax charged in first, unloading three bullets into guards near the wall.
One turned too slowly, his head snapped back with a crimson spray that painted the wall behind him.
Malik dashed over to Kaia and quickly cut her ropes free. "You alright?" he asked urgently.
She nodded rapidly like a hen pecking at rice, relief flooding her features.
Billy spat out his gag and looked at Jax and Malik with trembling resolve. "Who are you guys?"
"Don't worry, we're here to save you two!" Malik grinned wildly amidst all the chaos around them.
Alarms began blaring loudly overhead, a warning of incoming backup!
"Backup is coming," Malik growled fiercely. "Time to paint our exit red!"
---
They moved in a tight formation, Jax at the rear, Billy and Kaia nestled safely in the middle.
Jax wasn't just watching their backs; he was slicing through the enemy like a vengeful ghost, while Malik charged ahead with unstoppable force.
Suddenly, chaos erupted. An ambush! They were waiting for them on the second floor.
"AMBUSH!"
Before Jax could fully process it, a grenade landed right at his feet. Without missing a beat, he kicked it through a shattered window.
It detonated midair with a resounding WHUMP!
Malik sprang up the stairs, tackling an armed man wielding a shotgun.
With swift precision, he disarmed him and slammed his skull into the railing, a brutal reminder of their mission's stakes.
Meanwhile, Jax ducked behind a vending machine that was riddled with bullet holes and took aim at two men hiding behind a metal desk.
His shots rang out like thunder, taking them down one by one.
Malik's grip tightened as he pistol-whipped another attacker, his knuckles turning white from the effort. "Clear!" he shouted.
"Go! GO!" came the urgent reply.
Outside, the side door of their van swung open as Malik, Viktor, Kaia, and Billy scrambled inside, tires screeching against the pavement as they sped away from danger.
From the front seat, Evolon's voice crackled through their earpieces: "Extraction complete. The Sir is en route."
---------
The Underground Headquarters: A Kingdom of Shadows.
Hidden from the prying eyes of maps and guides, the underground headquarters throbbed beneath the neon glow of the Aegis District.
It was a beastly heart pulsing with life, steel walls, reinforced gates, biometric scanners, and guards clad in sleek matte-black combat armor prowled its corridors like wolves on the hunt.
This wasn't just a den of criminals; it was a fortress, a true kingdom of shadows.
After a successful extraction mission, Malik and Jax returned to base with Billy and Kaia in tow.
Medical personnel were already on standby, swiftly placing the wounded duo onto stretchers and into a private mobile medical bay nestled within the compound's depths.
Inside the central command chamber, a dimly lit arena filled with flickering monitors, holoscreens, and glowing digital maps, Malik paced anxiously.
The man known throughout the Aegis District as the King of the Underground looked anything but regal at that moment.
His leather jacket bore stains of blood and soot; his fists were bruised from recent combat, clenched tightly at his sides. He was agitated, impatient, and yes, scared.
Why? Because Jax had whispered one chilling truth: "The boss is coming."
Suddenly, metal doors at the far end hissed open.
Faint footsteps echoed, calm yet heavy with intent, as they approached.
Everyone turned to face this ominous sound as Arthur stepped into view.
No entourage or fanfare accompanied him, just a tall figure dressed in a custom-tailored black suit adorned with a silver lapel pin shaped like a roaring lion.
His mere presence sent chills through the room; no words were needed, the silence following his entrance spoke volumes.
Malik narrowed his eyes instinctively. So this was Arthur, the puppeteer behind Aegis District's seismic shifts; the man who had unified warring factions and bent veteran warlords to his will while scattering rival families like roaches under light.
Arthur's piercing gaze swept across the room before settling on Billy, who sat upright on a stretcher with a bandage wrapped around his temple.
Kaia lay unconscious beside him but stable nonetheless.
Their eyes met for an instant before Arthur gave Billy a curt nod, cold but not hostile.
Billy swallowed hard and looked away; he could feel an oppressive weight simply by meeting those icy eyes.
Without uttering another word, Arthur turned to Malik.
His gaze was colder than ice yet somehow burned into Malik's very soul. With an effortless flick of his fingers, three elite guards stepped forward to wheel out Billy and Kaia.
"Take them to Astraea Hospital's private ward," Arthur commanded in a low yet authoritative voice. "Clear this floor; anyone without security clearance is to be removed."
"Yes sir!" came the immediate response.
Jax flashed a sly smirk as he leaned in closer. "That," he murmured, his voice low and conspiratorial, "is the new boss you've been pestering me about."
Before Malik could fully grasp the weight of Jax's words, Arthur strode confidently to the center of the room.
Standing beneath the central holomap, he glanced over his shoulder at Jax and asked with an air of authority, "Where is Selene?"
"Don't worry, boss. I've already called her; she's on her way," Jax replied quickly.
Arthur nodded, slipping his hands into his pockets as he waited.
Just three minutes later, the black door near the comms hub swung open with a dramatic creak, and Selene stormed in like a force of nature.
Tall and sleek in her tactical trench coat, she exuded a cold beauty reminiscent of a panther, sharp and poised.
But when her gaze landed on Arthur, even her confident stride faltered.
Arthur's presence was palpable; it hit her like a hammer. This wasn't just any boss, this was something else entirely.
He turned his head slightly to acknowledge her before adopting an expression that was cool and emotionless.
Jax stepped forward to bridge the silence between them. "Malik, Selene, meet Arthur Osborn, the man who owns every shadow you walk in."
Malik's lips parted in surprise but no sound escaped him.
Meanwhile, Selene straightened up uncharacteristically under Arthur's intense gaze.
"I know you're both wondering who I am," Arthur began slowly, letting each word hang heavy in the air. "Why I'm not what you expected."
He moved deliberately around them as if commanding their attention completely.
"From now on," he continued with gravitas, "you are part of my army, my tools to wield."
The room fell into deep silence as he added ominously, "I hate being backstabbed or betrayed. If either of you entertains thoughts of betrayal…"
His voice trailed off knowingly; Malik and Selene exchanged quick glances that spoke volumes, they understood all too well what would follow such treachery.
Both swallowed hard; their hearts pounded like war drums echoing through their chests.
"But," Arthur said sharply breaking the tension, "if you serve me well… your lives will become much more colorful and easier."
He gestured toward the massive holomap now displaying Aegis's districts with confidence. "This world doesn't bend to money alone,it bows to will… to fear… to precision."
He leaned closer as if sharing a secret: "I conquered this city's underworld while sipping tea in my garden while men like you were too busy merely surviving... I was playing god."
Malik gulped audibly.
"I didn't come here to impress you," Arthur declared, his voice steady and unwavering. "I came here to make things clear."
He pivoted to face both Selene and Malik, his intensity palpable. "This isn't just about loyalty; it's about vision, about becoming part of something that will rewrite the world as we know it."
Selene felt a shiver run down her spine. There was an undeniable gravity in Arthur's words.
Stepping closer, Arthur continued, "You have one chance, not to join me, but to keep up."
Malik, who had faced countless assassins, mob bosses, and syndicates without flinching, found himself at a loss for words.
The silence hung thick in the air as Selene regarded Arthur's cold demeanor.
Arthur's eyes sparkled under the overhead light like shards of glass.
"From this moment on," he said with conviction, "every move in the underground flows through this room. Every faction that breathes in Aegis answers to us. You don't need to ask why; just look outside, the old world is crumbling while we're building something new."
