Cannon fodder in the Interstellar

Chapter 83 - Value for money

As Ruo Manni leaned wearily against the edge of the swimming pool, gasping for breath, the instructor looked at her data with an unusual expression.

At that moment, the director of the swimming center walked into the monitoring room. The instructor curiously said to the director, “Didn’t they say that this year’s combat department freshmen are all outstanding? The worst among them are at least at the mid-level of the early fourth stage. How come there’s one at the initial level of the fourth stage, and her physical fitness is too poor? She’s only reached the third level of gravity and is already struggling to swim; her heart rate is elevated. The previous freshmen who trained here, at the very least, only showed such discomfort after reaching the fourth level.”

Upon hearing this, the director was also surprised and walked over to check the information of this new student. Suddenly, his eyes lit up as he quickly used his authority to look up more details about her.

With a serious expression, the director said, “This new student is not typical. She’s not a martial artist as her major. Just having such a high martial artist level is already exceptional. She is a psychic, at the early fifth level.”

“What?” The blue instructor was extremely surprised, and then she quickly realized, remembering the girl from the enrollment assessment that had been widely publicized throughout the Gus Empire. She excitedly asked, “Is she the genius girl psychic?”

“Hmm!” The director nodded. “From now on, when she trains here, you will be in charge of her training specifically. Her training results must be submitted to the principal, so you need to record the training data in detail.”

“That’s no problem. If this student is a psychic, then her physical fitness is indeed remarkable. There are no senior-level psychics who can reach the fourth level in martial arts. Moreover, her psychic level is at the fifth level; at Xuan Gu First Military Academy, only a fourth-year student from the mecha manufacturing department has a fifth-level psychic.”

Upon realizing that Ruo Manni was the legendary genius girl, the instructor’s attitude changed dramatically. For instructors like them, there was nothing they liked more than seeing hard-working geniuses.

“You especially need to pay attention to her safety; we can’t allow anything to happen to her here,” the director instructed. “You’re lucky to have the opportunity to assist her in her training. I estimate that you’ll earn quite a few military merit points in the future, so do a good job.”

“Yes,” the instructor replied firmly.

Although Ruo Manni’s breath soon stabilized, she rested for quite a while before her hands and feet stopped feeling weak. She then turned and kicked off, swimming out again.

This time, the gravity in the swimming pool hadn’t changed. Ruo Manni guessed that the instructor had assessed her numerically and deemed that her current physical fitness couldn’t handle any additional gravity.

This judgment was correct; she indeed couldn’t endure a greater gravitational force. After swimming another lap, she felt that she had adapted to the gravity and found her rhythm. This time, the physical energy consumed was half of what it had been previously.

Swimming in three times the gravity for someone floating in water was nearly equivalent to experiencing four times the gravity on land. In other words, when she swam a thousand meters in this lane, it was equivalent to swimming four thousand meters under normal gravity.

Ruo Manni’s previous best record was swimming forty-five thousand meters before she could no longer continue, which had taken her four hours. However, in this swimming training facility, she could reach her limit in just one hour.

Ruo Manni was overjoyed; think of how much time she was saving! This swimming training facility was truly excellent.

After swimming two more laps, Ruo Manni reached the pool’s edge, and her entire body’s data indicated that she had reached the peak of fatigue.

The instructor assumed she was about to get out to rest, but to her surprise, Ruo Manni simply took out a bottle of potion and drank it. After leaning against the edge of the pool to catch her breath for three minutes, she turned around and swam off again.

This child had an incredibly strong will; even when exhausted, she could still grit her teeth and persevere. The instructor felt both proud and concerned, quickly sending a message to the lifeguards by the pool, asking them to pay close attention to the student in lane one.

She kept a close eye on Ruo Manni’s data, ready to call the lifeguards to pull her out of the water the moment her readings reached a dangerous level.

According to the data, Ruo Manni’s physical stats indicated she should have been utterly drained by now.

Most students would have gotten out of the pool to rest at this point; continuing required immense willpower. This Ruo Manni truly was remarkable; it was just the universe rewarding hard work. Students who work this hard will always progress the fastest.

In the water, Ruo Manni couldn’t sense the instructor’s admiration for her; she was simply too tired. She was swimming with everything she had, as if holding her breath desperately to keep going. The moment she relaxed, she would definitely be unable to swim any longer.

If she hadn’t experienced over two months of intense training and become accustomed to this hellish level of endurance, Ruo Manni would have surely given up. By the end of this final lap, she had no idea how she managed to reach the finish; all she knew was that she had finally made it, yet her hands felt so weak that she could barely hold onto the railing.

It was the lifeguard at the pool who pulled her out of the water and helped her sit on a chair by the edge of the pool.

Despite being utterly exhausted and barely able to speak, Ruo Manni still politely thanked the lifeguard.

The middle-aged lifeguard, though not smiling, spoke kindly: “You’re welcome. It’s my duty. If you continue to maintain this training spirit, Ruo Manni, you will definitely see great progress.”

The instructor then came out of the monitoring room and draped a large towel over Ruo Manni.

Although she was wearing a swimsuit consisting of shorts and a short-sleeved top, and the temperature in the swimming training room was comfortable, she didn’t feel cold. However, the instructor’s gesture warmed her heart.

After sitting by the pool for a while, Ruo Manni regained some strength. She then went into a cubicle to take a hot shower and dry off.

When she came out of the shower room, the instructor was waiting for her outside: “Ruo Manni, you are very diligent. Here are your training data and my analysis. Should I send them to you now?”

After receiving the training data, Ruo Manni asked, “I’ve already exceeded my training time. I’ll make up for the credits.”

“No need. As long as it doesn’t exceed half an hour, it’s fine. The school isn’t that unreasonable. The reason for requiring credits to enter the training facility is to motivate you to work hard,” the instructor replied with a smile.

“I’m a Level 1 instructor in this training facility. If you have no objections, I’ll be in charge of your swimming training data from now on. This way, I can systematically analyze your training data and provide the most suitable training intensity based on it. You’ll just need to message me three minutes before your training here in the future.”

Ruo Manni had seen in the internal network that Level 1 instructors were all highly capable individuals who had made significant contributions.

Most importantly, Ruo Manni could sense that the instructor had a good impression of her, so she naturally did not oppose her assistance in training and exchanged contact information with the instructor.

Ruo Manni highly appreciated this training method, feeling that the tuition fees at Xuan Gu First Military Academy were indeed worth it.

While she was resting earlier, she had observed the other military academy students training there. Each of them had instructors specifically assigned to collect training data and then tailor training plans for them. With such comprehensive assistance in training, it was hard for students not to make progress.

If the other training facilities operated in the same way, it would require a substantial amount of manpower and resources, making the high tuition fees completely justified.
