Chapter 11: Lovely
"Eve."
He called again as he remained on the partly leafless tree while staring at the clear pool below. The entirety of his large, scaly body tangled around the large apple tree as his upper body moved, golden slit-shaped eyes fixed on the stilled pool for any sign of her.
"Eve," he called again, and her head slowly began to emerge from the water to reveal her face and the nasty frown she gave him.
"What?" she called as he moved closer to have a better view of her. His long, dark red hair falling all the way down to his lower back as his reptilian heart swelled the more at the sight of the most beautiful creature in existence to him. His eyes had to soften each time they fell on her bright, blue ones.
"Stop immersing yourself completely in that pool for too long. You might drown."
She scoffed at him and shrugged her shoulders, making the serpent have little to no reasons why he shouldn't fall helplessly in love with her.
"Why would I drown—whatever that means—when I have you there constantly in that tree watching over me?" she smiled, and he couldn't desire her more. His golden gaze fixed on her as he continued to obsess over something he shouldn't have as his. "You will never hurt me or watch me hurt myself."

The last image of that lovely smile of trust on her face was enough for that insane smile of his to waver, and the fire threatening to consume her at once before him disappeared like it was never there. Peace was restored back to the ballroom as everyone slowly returned from their various hiding spots, only the sound of her sobbing and trembling form echoed as he stared down at her pathetic form in exhaustion.
His revenge on her was going to be very difficult if all he did was shamefully remember only the good times they had together and kept ignoring her ugly and monstrous side to him.
The demon king slowly turned away from her and said while turning his heart to stone,
"I simply reject you, mortal, as my mate."
That was enough to cause everyone's mouths to fall, and the whole ballroom to break out into quiet murmuring and talks. Tamara, who had been watching all this like her entire life and future depended on it, sighed in great relief.
"Simply because…" he continued, looking for the most ridiculous reason for his rejection.
"Because… you are anything but below my standards in every way. Unfit to rule beside me as queen, and your race here in Hell defines your worth to me."
All Eve could do was stare at his back turned away from her, Kira already present beside her to see if she was hurt in any way.
The demon king turned to one of the demon guards and said,
"Get them both out of my sight."
The demon guard nodded at the king's command before signalling to the other demon guards to get both Kira and Eve out of the ballroom and out of the Red Palace for good.
"Come on, Evie, get up before they drag us out of here. Why aren't you getting up?" Kira sobbed in between her pleas for her sister to rise to her feet so they could leave before they had them thrown out.
The more she watched him turn his back on her, his tall form arrogantly moving up the stairs, the more painful her tears flowed down her cheeks, and the weaker she got. Kira's pleas and cries beside her only made her situation worse, as a lot of demon guards began to approach them from the corner of her eyes.
He promised to recognize me.
She lowered her head in shame, as this hurt more than the episodes she was forced to endure daily because of her strange sickness.
"Oh God…" she didn't know how that even flowed so easily out of her mouth. She allowed herself to be pulled to her feet by Kira, who stood beside her, and thankfully because of her firm grasp around her, she did not fall.
The demon king returned to his seat and watched as the demon guards led both women he dismissed out of the ballroom and outside of the golden palace.
"Please don't push us down the stairs, please don't push us down the stairs, please don't—no!"
They were pushed down the stairs by the guards, with Eve being the most triggered by the fall as she rolled over to spit out the bloody vomit she had been doing a good job holding in while she was in the ballroom. Her coughs alerted Kira, who rushed beside her, terrified the fall down the stairs had ruptured a blood vessel in her or broken more than a bone.
"Eve!!!"
"I'm fine… I'm fine," Eve said quickly as she struggled to rise to her feet with Kira's help.
"Are you okay? Does any part of your body hurt… oh my God, you are bleeding from your nose!" Kira covered her mouth in both shock and guilt. She was the reason Eve had to come here and suffer like this. Tears of guilt welling up strongly in her eyes, and she felt really bad for her.
Eve brought her hands close to her face to touch her nose. Her hands shaking and her eyes wide in terror at the dark-red stain on her fingers.
This… was new.
Eve's heart sank in dread.
She turned around to see the closed doors of the entrance of the Red Palace.
"Evie, what are you doing? We need to return and get you treated now from your fall."
Eve shook her head as she took a few steps towards the golden stairs they had just rolled down from.
"No, no, no. I am not leaving until I—ah."
"Eve!"
Eve's hands clasped around her forehead as her eyes turned, and the world around her swirled in a funny way.
She shouldn't have risked it all—even her health—to come all the way here just to see him.
"Eve!" Kira cried out when her sister swayed off her feet and she fell just in time to catch her and bring her closer to her arms, trying her best to get her to open her eyes with tears and mucus running down her face at the same time.
"Somebody please help me!" she screamed out into the night to no one.
She brought her sister close to her chest.
"Oh, I am so sorry… so sorry for bringing you here, Eve."
