Cautious Eyes: An Uchiha's Path

Chapter 265: CHAPTER 265

Time passed quietly, and the gentle breeze of autumn was slowly giving way to a coming chill.

Uchiha Kai stood alone at the training grounds of the Konoha Military Police Force, his eyes following the amber leaves drifting from the trees. His face was calm, but his thoughts stirred with quiet intensity.

It was already October.

In just two months, the political climate in Konoha had shifted more drastically than in the past few years. The defection of Orochimaru, one of the Sannin, and the death of Shimura Danzo, leader of Root, had struck the village like twin thunderbolts. Though most civilians only sensed a vague unease, the shinobi who moved beneath the surface knew: Konoha was no longer the same.

Ordinary ninja might not grasp the full magnitude of Danzo's demise, but subtle changes were already evident. At the mission desk, familiar officials had quietly been replaced. The same was true in the Administrative Department, which was now undergoing a cautious restructuring.

The Anbu had also seen sweeping internal changes. Root had been disbanded on paper—its black-ops networks now dissolved or absorbed into the Fourth Hokage's command. Some of its operatives vanished. Others were quietly reassigned or imprisoned.

The Political Department was still led by Nara Shikaku, whose brilliance and loyalty earned the trust of both the Third and Fourth Hokage. Uchiha Kai remembered that Shikaku's son, Shikamaru, would one day inherit this mantle as well—though that time was still far off.

But aside from Shikaku, many officials in the administration were clearly uneasy, walking on eggshells. The transition from Sarutobi Hiruzen to Namikaze Minato had not been smooth. Danzo's grip on Root had suppressed any potential successors, and Minato had stepped into the position without an established power base.

He wasn't supposed to become Hokage so soon. Orochimaru had been the Council's first choice, and only after Uchiha Kai exposed the Sannin's inhumane experiments did the tides shift. But even that shift had cost them.

Minato had inherited chaos.

He couldn't even trust the remnants of the Third's political faction. They resisted his changes quietly, with just enough decorum to avoid overt disobedience. Still, Minato endured. Slowly, through Anbu reform, careful appointments, and Uchiha Kai's cooperation, he was consolidating real authority.

Inside Anbu, Kakashi Hatake was now the rising star—already being groomed to become its next commander.

The Military Police Force, under Kai's management, provided stability outside the Hokage's office.

Konoha's core was finally taking shape.

Yet, beneath this order, another layer of tension simmered.

While the effects of Danzo's death were subtle, the impact of Orochimaru's betrayal was immediate and visible. His labs had been shut down or seized. Loyal subordinates were either arrested or vanished. Minato and Jiraiya both knew that the damage Orochimaru had done to Konoha's foundation would take years to uncover.

For all their personal feelings, they couldn't excuse what Orochimaru had done. Human experimentation, desecration of clan corpses, illegal immortality research—it had touched too many.

Minato had tried to shield some of the lesser conspirators from harsh punishment, asking Kai for leniency in Konoha Prison. Kai, who still hoped to deal with Orochimaru again in the future, agreed—within limits.

As such, several prisoners were quietly sent to the Police Department's custody. Uchiha Kai, though short-staffed, managed.

Minato later allocated a temporary force of unassigned mission ninja to assist. It was also a quiet experiment in trust—ordinary ninja working alongside the Uchiha-led Police Force, something unseen since the clan had first been granted the role by the Second Hokage.

Kai welcomed it. The more outsiders saw the department's discipline and professionalism, the better its public image would become. He had long sought to rehabilitate the Uchiha's name, stained by years of isolation and propaganda.

Still, progress was slow.

"The fourth team is lagging behind expectations," Kai muttered, nodding to a reporting ninja. "The Hyuga, the Senju, some new Uchiha… they're not as sharp as the first batch."

But he knew: gold isn't always found on the surface. Some recruits needed time to be polished. And as much as he wanted to reduce Uchiha dominance in the department—to build something broader—he couldn't cut them out entirely. Not yet.

Among internal adjustments, Imai Kenta had transferred to the Mission Department, allowing Kai to promote Uchiha Ryukage in his place. Fuku Kota, while loyal, lacked the sharpness Kai required and was given a less demanding role.

Still, the bigger change was within Kai himself.

His eyes—his Mangekyō Sharingan—had fully recovered their strength after the battle with Danzo. In just two months, thanks to modified chakra data from Orochimaru's labs, his pupil power had returned far faster than expected.

Combined with his growing chakra, he now felt ready—even for Uchiha Obito.

He was prepared for the night he knew was coming: the Nine-Tails attack.

It would be the perfect storm: chaos, distraction, and opportunity.

Kai had already planned his move. Alongside Hyuga Aya, he would use the confusion to strike at Hiashi and Hizashi Hyuga—two pillars of the Main and Branch House division. With one surgical strike, he hoped to fracture the old system, paving the way for Aya to rise.

But there was risk.

Even hidden in the night, the Byakugan could identify a chakra signature. To counter this, Kai had developed a mask using White Zetsu cells—a technique Obito himself had once used.

Hinata Aya confirmed it: the mask blocked Byakugan observation to a surprising degree. It would be enough.

"Maybe I'll paint it orange and black," Kai smirked. "Let them think it's someone else."

He wasn't above misdirection. He had done it before, and he would do it again.

Still, he had one concern.

"Stay at the department for now," Kai told Aya as he stepped into his office. "Things are moving fast. I want you ready at all times."

Aya, meditating cross-legged on the floor, opened her eyes. "Is it happening soon?"

"Soon," he nodded. "The Nine-Tails will break free. That's when we move."

Aya tilted her head. "Should we call Imai Kenta? He's taken enough favors. Might be time he earned them."

"We will," Kai replied. "He's bled for us too. Especially after all those senjutsu notes you gave him."

Aya had been the first to approach Sage Mode among them, thanks to her own initiative and intelligence. She'd nearly awakened it using only Kai's stolen data—an incredible feat.

Kenta, despite his compatibility with White Zetsu cells, had not been as lucky.

But he had his own path. Kai and Aya planned to inject him soon with their latest serum. Kenta's growing status as a stabilizing force in the Senju clan made him far too valuable to overlook.

Aya's eyes flickered. "I still don't understand why he hasn't changed his name back. 'Senju Kenta' would shake the village more than 'Imai Kenta.'"

Kai chuckled. "Would you change your surname if someone asked you?"

Aya gave a thin smile. "Depends. What name are we talking about?"

Meanwhile...In a quiet corner of Konoha, Namikaze Minato stared out over the Hokage Rock, the golden leaves dancing past his window. He was more confident now—more capable. But even so, he was nervous.

Kushina's due date was only days away—October 10th. And with it, the greatest risk Konoha had faced in years.

A Jinchūriki's childbirth was a dangerous thing. The seal weakened, the Nine-Tails stirred, and history had taught them to be cautious.

To that end, he had reluctantly accepted the Third Hokage's recommendation: allow Sarutobi Biwako to assist in the birth.

It was a concession for the sake of experience—but one he still viewed with unease.

Sarutobi Hiruzen himself had grown distant, cold even. Defeated politically by Minato and wounded by Danzo's disgrace, he wore the mask of duty, but not warmth.

"Minato," he had said during their last meeting, "the seal will weaken. That's how we lost Lady Uzumaki Mito's successor. You must be prepared. No risks. Kushina must give birth outside the village, under heavy barrier protection."

Minato had nodded, wrapping an arm around Kushina. "I'll be by her side. Always."

He would not falter.

Even if Root agents would be present. Even if Sarutobi's distrust of the Uchiha had grown unbearable.

He would protect them.

He would protect Kushina, Naruto, and the village.

But he had no idea that the storm he feared had already begun to take shape—under his nose, among shadows he could not yet see.
