Chapter 9: Meeting God for the first time
Jerry woke to find himself nowhere. He was obviously somewhere but when he looked around he couldn't see anything. He could see himself but when he looked down he couldn't see the floor he was laying on. He could feel it but there was no color, no definition, no discernible contour to what he found himself on. He could not see any shape to any walls or ceiling. It was as if he were floating on an invisible platform in the middle of space. As he stood up he tried to figure out where he was, and how he got here. The last thing he remembered was losing it with Diane and starting to attack but then everything went black. He hoped he didn't have another episode. As a child he tried to calm and mature as he possible could for a kid, but sometimes his frustration would build to the point where he would have black out moments. He would later find that he hurt someone during those time. He was always ashamed of those moments. His father always drilled into him self-control. Losing yourself and hurting someone in the process was never an excuse to his father. Thinking back to his argument with Diane, even-though he felt justified, he was ashamed to think that he let go of his control to the point that he got violent with her.
Jerry was very deep in thought, so it took him awhile to realize he felt a presence behind him. He took a minute to ponder the feeling he had inside. He felt the presence, but it didn't feel threatening to him, so he didn't turn around right away. Being able to detect the presence of another by feel was new to him. Jerry always intrigued him, and he wanted to solve this right away. He focused down to where the feeling was coming from. It emanated from deep in his core. It was similar to the feel of someone watching you but much more precise and pronounced. By focusing on that feeling he could tell exactly where they were in relation to he was standing. He could feel that the person behind was giving him the time to learn and adjust to this new ability. When he closed his eyes and concentrated he could almost see them in his mind, they were smiling. Then he noticed they felt familiar to him, like they knew each other for all their lives. Smiling Jerry turns around saying, "Hey Mike....." But quickly stops when he sees it is clearly not Mike behind him.
"No I am not Mike. My name is Orion. And Jerry are a very fascinating creature, and a very quick study too. If you can pick up on area detection that easily then this is going to be a very short class."
Jerry was confused, he was so sure that it was Mike behind him. The familiar feeling he got off this stranger didn't make sense. Jerry had never seen this oddly tall man before in his life, yet his "area detection" that he called it told him they were old friends.
"I can tell but the perplexed look on your face that you feel let down, thinking that you got something wrong. Well let me start from the beginning and see if I can clarify things for you. You have awaken an ability that now puts you on the same level as beings that inhabit the higher planes. You are no longer just a human from earth. You have transcended you inherit limitations. You are not immortal but..."
Orion pulled his arm back and faster than Jerry could react he threw his arm forward and three spinning blades materialized from his fingers heading right for Jerry's chest. Faster than Jerry had ever moved in his life he dodged left allowing the first blade to fly past him. As he did he noticed that the blades seemed like they were moving thru water very slowly. As he dodged the second blade he saw that he wasn't going to be able to dodge the last one no matter how fast he moved, so he threw his right arm up bracing for the pain he knew was coming. When the pain never came he looked down to see the last blade frozen in the air in front of him.
"Your abilities are tied to your body and they will continue to exist as long as you do. So they will act on their own in a defensive capacity on your behalf only when your life is threatened. You now exist outside of the flow of time. Time being your main ability you have some control over. You will need to travel to other worlds and learn what you can. You will have to use that amazing brain of your to figure this out along the way. I am hear solely as you guide, I can put you on the path, but you must walk it. The only tip I can give is the answers and right there inside you. And like you did with the area detection you must figure things out on your own or learn from someone else like I said before. Now since you have been completely patient allowing me to say everything I was sent here to say, I will answer any questions you have if I am allowed to"
Jerry looked at Orion studying him. He had just been given way to much information to process. He understood what was said to him, some weird part of his brain took this all in stride like it knew all of this already. He filed that away for later. Thinking about things he started with the most obvious question.
"Where are we?", Jerry asked
"We are in a bubble I created outside of space and time." Orion answer nodding as if he knew this was going to be Jerry's first question.
"Why did you bring me here?"
"You time-line is unstable. What Diane did has created a severe tear in your planets continuum. You have a lot of work to do to correct her mistake, and since you are to kindhearted to see destruction done to your planet without trying to fix things. I brought you here to start your journey and get you going in a direction that will really help."
"What must I do to fix Diane's mistakes?"
"Well you have to fix just one mistake. You have to find Mike and restore him to his proper place in time. The universe needs to have balance. Since Diane upset that balance the universe will try to correct it on its own. You DO NOT want that to happen. The universe doesn't care what gets destroyed in the process. Half your planet can be demolished, and the universe wouldn't even bat an eye."
"Why must I fix her mistakes why is she being held responsible for what she's done?"
"That one I can't answer right now. I'm not purposely being vague or avoiding answering you directly I just genuinely don't know. My boss didn't provide me with that info. And trust me I asked the exact same question."
"Who is your boss, and what does he want with me?"
"I can't tell you who he is, and all he wants from you right now is to fix your time-line. Something you would want to do anyway. Especially since that means not only getting Mike back but Lisa also."
"You know an awful lot about me, but I know nothing of you and your boss and I'm supposed to just blindly follow your instructions just because say so. No thank you. Let me tell you what I think this is. This is a fucking test isn't! You conveniently left out certain details, you told me your name, but you never said what you are. You gave away that you are a being from a higher plane of existence, but exactly does that mean. You could be some demon come to corrupt and fool me into something I would never do. When I asked what your boss wanted from me, you used the words right now, which implies he's going to want something else in the future. And this little bubble of is nothing but an interrogation room. Who is watching this little interview we are having, your boss?" Jerry hated when people tried to treat him like he was stupid. These beings from a higher plane as they called themselves must have thought his little human brain was too feeble to see thru there ploys. Well they were wrong, he wasn't going anywhere or doing anything till he got some serious answers.
Jerry's area detection kicks in again and he can feel someone behind him again. At the same time Orion leans to the side looking past him and says, "I told you he was a smart one." Orion had a self-satisfying grin on his face and was chuckling to himself. As Jerry slowly turned around his area detection told him whoever was behind him they were ancient. They literally felt as old as time. They weren't hostile, but he felt they exactly friendly either. More of a completely indifference toward him. When Jerry could see him he was surprised to see he looked like a picture of Noah or Moses from the bible. He almost laugh at the comical comparison.
"I am 'I Become What I Become.' That name should mean something to. I chose this persona to help you associate and come to terms with who I am.", the old man said. Jerry didn't know what to say. That name did mean something to him, but it wasn't possible. Could he really be speaking to God face to face? He felt unworthy and didn't know what to do with himself. Should he bow, kneel, get down and prostrate himself before him. He was so stunned he just froze and couldn't speak. God took pity on his anxiety and softened his face toward him.
"Relax child. I only came to lend credence to Orion's words. I knew you would be skeptical, so I was prepared to come and explain somethings to you. Since I know exactly what you want the answer to, I'll just answer them as they come to your mind. This is a test, your awakening has given you access to amazing abilities and I have to see if you will be a force of good or evil. You will quest thru the multi-verse and I will judge you on your actions. The scenarios will require you to use everything you have in you to not only survive but to help others. The solution will not always be easy to find, and sometimes even harder to accomplish. Each quest will bring you closer to finding Mike and fixing your time-line. And Yes I can just fix everything now, but this allows me to better understand your future. You no longer belong within my realm, but I am still responsible for you and if I feel you are more of a threat then a benefit then I will intercede and end your existence. What I would really like is for you to be an ally similar to Orion here, someone I can trust to help keep things in order."
Jerry looked at God waiting for him to finish, he had a lot more questions going thru his brain. When it seemed like God wasn't going to say anything else Jerry said, "So that's it? What about Diane? How do I find Mike? Where am I going exactly? Can't you give me more information to go off of?" God just smiled benevolently at him. Jerry sighed," So this is how it's going to be then. I don't really feel as if I have a choice, so what do I have to do to start?" Orion stepped forward with a big goofy grin on his face, "All you have to do right now is fall." With that he pushed Jerry who felt his world tilt backward, and he began to fall, and fall, and fall. Suddenly a bright light appeared beneath him, and as he fell into it he was blinded by its brilliance.
