Corporate Villainy: Trampling Protagonists as a Business Dad

Chapter 38: Strategic Manipulation (2)

(P.S.— Guys the days I numbered are from the day war was declared and changed corporate gala to be in five instead of four days.)

Day 4 - 6:15 PM - Helena's PR Campaign

Helena sat in her private office, reviewing the media placement reports that would position Vincent as a reasonable alternative to the escalating corporate warfare. Her PR campaign was subtle but effective, emphasizing Cornelius Holdings' stability and ethical business practices while avoiding direct criticism of either combatant.

"The 'Rising Innovator in Corporate Logistics' article will run in tomorrow's Business Weekly," she reported to Vincent via secure communication. "The piece emphasizes our safety record, employee satisfaction ratings, and charitable work without mentioning Annapurna or Meridian by name."

"Excellent. And the positioning among government officials?"

"Three Corporate Council members have made informal inquiries about our potential interest in mediation services. They're beginning to view the conflict as a threat to sector stability."

Day 5 - 8:30 PM - The Emotional Ripples

The escalating corporate war was creating unexpected social dynamics throughout Autumnvale's business community. Vincent's intelligence network was reporting shifting loyalties and emerging opportunities as people positioned themselves for the continuing conflict.

At Annapurna's main office, employees were increasingly viewing Vincent's company as a potential ally. Cornelius Holdings' emergency logistics support during the supply crisis had been timely, professional, and reasonably priced—a stark contrast to Meridian's aggressive tactics.

"The sentiment analysis from Annapurna's workforce is positive," David reported. "They see us as a stabilizing force that could help them weather the current crisis."

"And Meridian's employees?"

"More interesting. Their workers are genuinely unaware of their leadership's more aggressive tactics. They view the conflict as a reasonable business dispute and see us as a neutral party who might broker a resolution."

Vincent nodded approvingly. "Perfect. We maintain our reputation for reasonable business practices while both sides escalate their war."

The most significant development was in Sector 4, where mercenaries and information brokers were recognizing the profitable opportunities presented by the escalating conflict. Multiple parties were beginning to offer services to both sides, creating a secondary market for corporate warfare.

"The mercenary networks are mobilizing," David continued. "They're positioning themselves to profit from extended conflict, which means they have a vested interest in preventing quick resolution."

"Excellent. External forces working to maintain the conflict will reduce suspicion about our involvement."

Day 5 - 10:45 PM - Vincent's Strategic Assessment

As Vincent reviewed the day's developments, he was pleased with the successful escalation but aware of the delicate balance required to maintain momentum without revealing his manipulation.

The corporate war was following his projected timeline. Both sides were committed to their positions, external forces were supporting continued conflict, and his own company was positioned as a reasonable alternative to the chaos. The attack on Celia had provided the emotional catalyst necessary to transform a business dispute into a personal war.

His next challenge would be managing the multiple relationships he was cultivating. The more significant challenge would be approaching Celia in a way that distinguished him from the corporate vultures who saw her as a target.

Vincent studied Celia's photograph on his desk, considering the psychological profile Olivia had compiled. The death of her father in a construction accident caused by faulty materials had clearly shaped her obsessive focus on quality and safety. Her childhood love of engineering puzzles suggested she approached problems systematically and logically.

Most importantly, she valued competence, integrity, and genuine interest in her work rather than superficial charm or physical attraction. Vincent would need to demonstrate that he understood and respected her professional achievements while gradually revealing his personal interest.

The corporate war would continue to escalate over the next few days, providing the crisis atmosphere that would allow him to position himself as both a professional ally and a personal refuge. Marcus's increasing possessiveness would eventually become a liability, and Vincent would be perfectly positioned to offer a better alternative.

As he considered his strategic position, Vincent reflected on the complex emotional dynamics he was managing. Helena had been right about Olivia's feelings, and her assessment of the situation had been characteristically insightful. The challenge was maintaining operational efficiency while navigating the personal investments of the people around him.

The next few days would bring new opportunities to distinguish himself from the chaos surrounding Celia while continuing to fuel the conflict that would ultimately serve his purposes.

Day 5 - 11:15 PM - Vincent's Executive Suite

Vincent was reviewing final reports when Helena arrived, her expression carrying the kind of focused intensity that suggested she had something important to discuss. She closed the door behind her and approached his desk with deliberate purpose.

"We need to talk about Olivia," she said without preamble, settling into the chair across from him.

Vincent looked up from his documents. "I'm listening."

"She's been working herself to exhaustion gathering intelligence on Celia Annapurna. The woman's sharp enough to understand exactly how you plan to use that information, and she's not handling it well."

Vincent leaned back in his chair. "Her emotional investment in our working relationship is... complex."

"Complex?" Helena's eyebrow arched. "Vincent, she's thirty years old, has been devoted to you for six years, and she's in love with you. There's nothing complex about it—it's simple and heartbreaking."

Helena's voice softened with genuine concern. "She's been your right hand through everything. She knows your schedule better than you do, anticipates your needs before you express them, and has never once betrayed your trust. That level of dedication doesn't come from professional ambition alone."

Vincent's expression grew thoughtful. "You're saying I should address the situation directly."

"I'm saying you should be honest with yourself about what you want." Helena stood and moved closer to his desk. "I've seen how you look at her sometimes—not as an employee, not as a useful asset, but as a woman. And I've seen how carefully you've been avoiding acting on those feelings."

"Helena—"

"Let me finish." Her voice carried a note of surprising vulnerability. "I know you well enough to recognize when you're strategizing about someone's future. The question is whether you're planning to let her suffer in silence while you chase after other women, or whether you're waiting for the right moment to do something about it."

Vincent studied her face carefully. "And your opinion on that potential development?"

Helena was quiet for a moment, her fingers tracing the edge of his desk. "Olivia has earned her place in your life. She's proven her loyalty, her competence, and her discretion. She's also survived whatever tragedy made her so fiercely protective of the people she cares about."

Vincent's eyes sharpened at the reference to Olivia's past, but Helena continued.

"More importantly, she loves you without illusions. She's seen you at your most calculating, your most ruthless, your most strategically brilliant. She knows exactly what you are, and she loves you anyway. That's... rare."

"And you would be comfortable with that arrangement?"

Helena's smile was complex—part affection, part resignation, part genuine warmth. "Vincent, I told you before—you're not the kind of man who can be owned. I'd rather share you with someone who understands and supports what you're building than lose you to someone who doesn't."

She moved around the desk, her voice taking on a more intimate tone. "Besides, Olivia has been taking care of you in every way except one for six years. It might be time to let her take care of you completely."

Vincent stood, his hands settling on her waist as he pulled her closer. "And what about your needs? Your feelings?"

"My feelings are that I love you enough to want you to be happy," Helena replied, her arms going around his neck. "And I think you're happier when you're surrounded by people who see you clearly. Olivia sees you more clearly than anyone."

She paused, her voice dropping to a whisper. "But tonight, I need you to remind me exactly how much you value what we have together. Before you start expanding your household."

Vincent's response was to lift her by the hips, pulling her against him as their lips met in a kiss that was both tender and demanding. Helena responded with equal intensity, her fingers tangling in his hair as she pressed closer.

"Bedroom," she murmured against his lips. "Now."

Vincent carried her toward the private suite attached to his office, their kisses growing more heated as they moved. Helena's legs wrapped around his waist, her hands exploring the strong lines of his shoulders and back.

"You're going to prove to me," she whispered between kisses, "that adding another woman to your life will only make you more appreciative of the ones you already have."

Vincent's response was wordless but unmistakable as he pushed open the bedroom door, his attention completely focused on the woman in his arms.

Tomorrow would bring the corporate gala, where he would finally see his future targets in person—Celia Annapurna, the mysterious bodyguard, and all the other players in this elaborate game. The evening promised to be... extraordinarily interesting.

But whatever strategic considerations awaited him tomorrow, tonight belonged entirely to Helena.

The game was proceeding beautifully, and Vincent was winning on every front—but some victories required more personal celebration than others.
