Chapter 10: Dark forest

It had taken him a long time to dig the mana stones out of the thomisides corpse, but his efforts were definitely rewarded.

The thomiside seemed to have especially big mana stones, they had a diameter of about an inch, they were of a dark violet colour and looked eerily similar to a humans kidney stone, had it not been for the size and colour.

They were filled to the brim with mana and Cades was looking forward to working with it.

Other than that Cades took some pieces of the carapace to try and make an enchanted weapon that would allow him to have a greater reach than his measly, pathetic little dagger.

The sharp dagger was truly useful for artificing, it's intended purpose, but it was not practical in a fight, similarly to his magic scalpel or a sewing needle.

All of these tools could definitely be used to kill someone but there were clearly many better weapons than them.

Personally, Cades would like to have a sword to fight against his opponents, like the thomiside from just now, otherwise he might not even be able to penetrate far enough to reach their blood vessels.

But Cades couldn't make the sword he so longed for right now, because, although thomisides were very territorial he was not save.

Thomisides ate other monsters after all.

Cades knew he wouldn't be able to fly for quite some time, the poison of a thomiside paralyses the affected body part for about a whole week.

As such he wouldn't be able to cross over the mountains and instead got ready to follow the river so that he may find a safe space where he could make the sword and recover the ability to fly.

After picking up all the things that he had been able to scavenge from the thomisides dead corpse he began walking, quite a rare thing for ehetrians.

After a while of walking the river ran dry and Cades had to walk off into the forest, desperately hoping that he wouldn't lose his direction and end up back where he started.

The forest consisted of mighty trees that stopped almost all the light from entering it, and as Cades continued on walking among the ancient trees he started to truly think about what had happened to ehetria.

There was no reason for anyone to attack ehetria, but it couldn't have been a random occurrence.

Something like that had never happened before, at least not that Cades knew of.

Where would he be able to find clues as to what had truly happened ?

Cades wasn't sure of that, he really wasn't sure of anything that was happening right now but that didn't really matter as the only thing he truly had to do now was to survive.

After Cades had been walking for a few hours and the sun slowly vanished behind the horizon he came to a tree almost as big as the one he had been laying on not too long ago.

In the roots of the ancient goliath there was a small "cave" that Cades intended to use for safety during the artificing process.

The artificing process in on itself was not too difficult for Cades after he used the ujo that was able to generate light and was finally able to see what he was doing.

The artifact he wanted to create was a sharp and preferably long sword.

He began with the sword as that was the easier by far.

The first step was to cut the swords blade out of the carapace of the thomiside, this one wasn't particularly difficult with the only really difficult part being the act of straightening out the soon-to-be blade.

After that he began the process of enchanting it.

The first spell he engraved onto it was a spell that would use the wielders mana to harden itself, a very important factor for weapons.

His second engraving was a very peculiar one.

It would cause a current of mana to be forced through the body of the one that was to be cut by the blade.

The third enchantment was an enchantment to hold it's form, it would allow it to stay sharp for a much longer time than it would've normally.

In the fourth step he added the holding and exchanging rune to cause the blade to heat up or cool down if the wielder wished for it to do so, this step also had the effect that he would actually be able to use the enchantments.

Lastly, he connected all of the enchantments so that they would work hand in hand and not just explode.

After the enchantments were done the practical part began.

Firstly, he sharpened the blade as well as he could, after he was done it wasn't really that sharp, but it was enough for fighting against monsters if he continued working on it.

Secondly, he added a handle to use the sword, it was made of a few chains he still had with him from the artificing class and some small branches that had fallen from the ancient tree.

The chains were those of a pendant or amulet so they looked quite mismatched together with the light brown wooden handle that had been rigorously sanded down by Cades on a stone.

Altogether the sword looked like a mismatched mix of orange, Brown and silver trash, but it did work surprisingly well.

After taking a short break he began to collect his mana and finally began to bathe the sword which he lovingly decided to call "thomisides mandible".

The process of bathing in the mana caused the runic sequences spread all over the sword to be drenched in energy and start their work, it was kind of like a jumpstart for a car that had broken down.

After the sword was done he finally picked up the mana stones and began working on the second artifact he wanted to create.

A ring to enhance his magic.
