Chapter 20: 20. Nocelle's Dukedom
The Midia Kingdom was the center of the Lavoris continent, and the kingdom's power and area were divided into five parts: the Center Holy Region, the North Verdelane Dukedom, the East Fitzgerald Dukedom, the West Dubost, and the South Nocelle Dukedom.
Currently at Nocelle manor, the morning is filled with birds chirping in the gardens outside, clang of soldiers training in the courtyard and the rustle of servants sweeping the cobblestone paths.
Lorie, a lively maid, walked through Nocelle Manor's hallways, carrying a towel and warm water.
Humming cheerfully, she nudged open a familiar door at the corridor's end, announcing in a sing-song voice, "Good morning! Your personal caretaker has returned!"
But of course, there's no response returned from the modest-looking bedroom except for the birds chirping through an open window. The half opened curtains let sunlight cast soft patterns across a large bed where a young man lay deep unconscious for three days.
Lorie set the tub on a table beside the bed and poutedted. "Still no awakening, huh?" she muttered, wringing out the damp towel and looked at the grey haired young man.
She still remembered when her young Lady Anna Nocelle brought him and another beast girl along with wounded soldiers. They treated him, but he was still unconscious. "You're making my job far too easy, you know. A girl could get bored!"
She pulled back the blanket, revealing his thin, scar-ridden body—mostly whip lashes that crisscrossed his back. Lorie's cheerful demeanor softened, she had seen these marks each day for three days.
"Normally, this Lorie doesn't serve just anyone, but you earned some points for saving my lady." She said as she cleaned his body.
Then she took his right hand gently, which was revealed to have an old fracture.
She lifted it gently, trying to clean, but a sudden twitch in his fingers made her freeze. She turned slowly and froze. His calm blue eyes were open, staring at her. There was something chilling in their depth, something that made her heart stop.
"Well, hello there." She whispered with a forced smile.
Before she could step back, Alan's hand shot out, seizing her wrist with surprising strength.
___
In the courtyard outside, Anna Nocelle stood straight in her training outfit, her silver hair shining in the morning sun. She pulled the string of her mana bow glowing in blue as she focused. A glowing arrow appeared, trembling with energy as she drew the string tight.
"Easy, girl." The tanned beauty, Janine said, her voice calm, her silver-pink hair tied back, watched closely. "Control the mana, or you'll use it up too fast."
Anna heard it but didn't respond, her red eyes locked on the target, specifically at the bullseye, and released it, hitting the target with a thud, slightly missing the bullseye.
Janine cheered loudly, clapping with excitement. "That's my girl!" she shouted with a wide grin. Nearby soldiers joined her, their cheers echoing across the courtyard, making the silver-haired girl embarrassed as she turned around, her bow disappearing into mana particles.
"Jeni, please," Anna mumbled, brushing silver strands from her face. "I'm still burning too much mana. It's not perfect."
Janine laughed, stepping forward to mess up the adorable girl's hair. "Come on, you're learning faster than anyone I've seen. Give yourself some credit, girl."
Anna started to argue, but a sharp scream came from the manor.
"Help! Someone, please!"
Anna turned to Manor as she recognized the sound. "It's Lorie," she whispered as she ran inside immediately.
"Anna, wait!" Janine shouted with worry as she chased after her, boots hitting the cobblestones. A few soldiers glanced at each other before following them.
Anna ran through the hallways towards the source of the scream and reached the room where Alan was kept. She nudged open the door with her hip, entering the room only to freeze, her eyes widened.
The maid, Lorie, was on the bed, with a shirtless Alan sitting on top of her, pinning her hands with one of his. It looked bad. The kind of scene anyone would misunderstand.. But Lorie's terrified eyes met Anna's.
"Lady Anna, help me! This freak's gonna kill me!" Lorie screamed, her voice shaking with terror.
Anna saw the iron fork in Alan's trembling hand which pressed against Lorie's throat. "Hey, calm down," Anna pleaded, raising both hands slowly. "Please, don't hurt her."
Janine and other soldiers entered the room. They froze, weapons half-drawn, taking in the scene and Misunderstanding the situation.
Anna's urgent whispered to them. "He's got a fork to her throat."
Soldiers were alerted, raising their weapons, but Janine waved her hand. "Weapons down, now," she ordered and they obeyed, though they looked uneasy. She didn't lower her sword because she trusted him. She lowered it because monsters don't calm when cornered.
Janine stepped forward, with light, careful tone. "Whoa, kid, what's with the drama? Lorie's the cutest maid we've got. No need to scare her with a fork, of all things. How about you put that down and we talk?"
Alan's blue eyes flickered with confusion and narrowed warily. "Where am I?" he whispered.
Anna took a small step closer carefully, saying, ""You're in the official residence of Duchess Nocelle, in the South Nocelle Dukedom. We brought you here after you passed out three days ago."
Alan's eyes narrowed as his grip on the fork tightening. "Where's Moriko?" he demanded.
"What?" Anna blinked in suprise.
In one quick move, Alan pulled Lorie to her knees on the bed, using her as a shield, the fork still at her throat. "The beastgirl—the one with me," he growled. "If anything happened to her... I swear I'll burn—"
"What's the noise here?" He heard a familiar feminine voice behind the soldiers at the entrance.
The soldiers stepped aside and Moriko walked in, rubbing her eyes, her cat ears twitching as she scratched her messy hair. "Why's everyone crowded in Alan's room?" she mumbled, then froze as her golden eyes saw him. "Alan? You're awake?"
Alan's grip on the maid loosened as she shook off from him and scrambled to Anna and Janine, breathing hard in panic.
Moriko's face brightened looking at him conscious again, and she leapt to him. "You're really awake!" she squealed, jumping at him. Her tackle knocked Alan off the bed, and they hit the floor with a thud. Moriko hugged him tight, her tail swishing happily.
"Kitty! Get off!" Alan groaned from the floor, but a small smile showed his relief.
Moriko sat up, her golden eyes showing worry. "I was so scared when you didn't wake up, What happened to you?" she asked.
Alan grimaced as he tried to sit straight. "I'm not sure," he whispered. "Maybe that girl's control magic hit me harder than I thought."
"Sorry to break up your cute little moment," Janine said with playful tone, grabbing a sword from a nearby soldier. Her boots thumped on the wooden floor as she stepped closer, pointing the blade at Alan with a teasing smirk. "We've gotta restrain you for that wild streak, kid."
Alan sighed, raising both hands in surrender with small smile on his lips. "Alright."
Then he realised something entirely, something that sent him slumber for three days.
"By the way, what happened to that maked freak attacked us?" He asked.

Meanwhile, in the North Verdelane Dukedom.
At Verdelane Manor, guards stood at the heavy iron gates, looking at the path. One guard squinted as he noticed a figure moving slowly, almost dragging themselves forward.
"Who's that?" he muttered while nudging the others. The guards raised their weapons as the figure came closer.
It was Zoe, her face pale with tiredness.
She dragged herself toward the gates, but she collapsed even before reaching, her black cloak spreading around her like dark water.
The guards lowered their spears and stared at the fallen figure
