Chapter 12: Intelligence
"Have a safe trip. I'm sorry again for everything that happened. Though, I've been meaning to compliment your suit. It's amazing."
Ray, standing beside Felicity and at the door to the medical room, smiled wholesomely.
"Thanks…but I just can't seem to keep it up." Hearing this, Felicity darted her eyes between the two men as she stepped closer.
"He means the suit."
"Oh, yeah. Nothing needs to be fixed…down there."
'Oh, boy. Their personalities are more exhausting in real life.'
Derek inwardly sighed as he stared blankly, focusing once again.
'It seems common conversations do nothing to help increase my "Understanding". I need to do more.'
"But why?"
The couple paused, their frantic chatter halting as they stared confusingly at the bedridden boy.
"Why what?" Ray asked.
"Why did you make the suit?"
"People like you who have everything and can help the world in the comfort of an office don't suddenly wake up and decide to be superheroes."
Ray said nothing, his smile slowly fading as he broke eye contact.
"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to. I know better than to pry."
'But he's going to tell me anyway.'
Derek knew Ray was the empathetic type.
After Derek saved the lives of him and his friends and subsequently tried to kill the boy, Ray felt like he owed him.
Which was why…
"No, it's okay. Last year, during the attack on Starling City by Slade and his soldiers, my fiance died."
'This is it. Narrative Viewpoint!'
[You have enabled Narrative Viewpoint. Your gaze has focused on the character Ray Palmer, AKA The Atom.]
"I…wasn't able to help."
[Ray Palmer has shared a deep secret with you.]
'Is that not it? What do I have to do for my "Understanding" to increase? I understand this character enough.'
[There is more to Ray Palmer's secret. One that he doesn't feel comfortable sharing but deeply bothers him.]
Reading this, Derek's mind raced.
It was working fast but not fast enough and before he knew it, the world around him started to slow as he continued.
'Come on, think. Think about his story from when he was first introduced in Arrow to when he joined the legends. Something that deeply bothers him.'
Everything led back to the night his fiance died. It was his origin story.
He was clueless as to how much time was passing, his only objective being to solve this single mystery.
'Wait…'
Derek's eyes fixed on Ray as everything around him quickened once again, returning to normal.
"...to be able to stop that from happening to anyone else." Ray finished, the first few words escaping the once-dazed Derek.
And to this, he knew exactly what to say.
"But you're weak."
Felicity darted her eyes to Derek in surprise.
'I don't remember him having any insecurities. But I failed to realise something.'
Derek's position in the world.
He stopped thinking of Ray's story and instead focused on how he now played a role in it.
'Our fight. I beat him while barely using my Eclipse. With all the time he has spent making a grand supersuit, it had to have hurt his pride.'
Derek was prepared for Ray's easy comeback by explaining his suit wasn't ready and how he had great plans for the future, which Derek knew to be true.
However, his eyes widened at the next words he heard.
"I know."
'Huh…'
Both Felicity and Derek surprisingly turned to Ray before they even had a chance to say anything.
[You have forced a confession of Ray's painful thoughts.]
"If tonight has shown me anything, it's that I'm still too weak to help the people around me."
"If it weren't for you, we'd have died on that railroad and even if we did manage to get out of it, Cisco would've been stung by that bee."
The child-like enthusiasm on Ray's expression was no more, replaced with a stoic one as he looked into Derek's eyes.
"But I won't stop. I'll get better…because I have to. For Anna and the loved ones around me now." He turned to Felicity as he spoke the last sentence, watching her cup her hand around his face.
'I see…I was mistaken…'
[You have made Ray Palmer share his deepest thoughts with you.]
[Your understanding of Ray Palmer has increased.]
"I understand. I'm sorry for my insensitivity. I'm still young, naive and inexperienced with the many things the world has to offer."
"But I hope to one day achieve the greatness you will inevitably bring to this world."
Derek raised his heavily bandaged arm as he finished.
Ray stared for a second before stepping forward, shaking the boy's hand, a warm chuckle escaping his lips.
"We'll meet again, Derek Bond."
Derek nodded, watching the two exit as he fell deep into thought.
"What a sweet boy," Felicity whispered as they walked.
[Ray Palmer's impression of you has grown more favourable]
[You have left an impression]
[Narrative Viewpoint has been deactivated]
'I was wrong.'
Ever since arriving in this world, Derek has had an abstract mind.
This world he observed for so long was more than just some plotlines and a few seasons.
A world of Magic, Aliens and superpowers…but also a world with humans.
Humans with thoughts, emotions and goals just like him.
'This world was now real and I'd be wise to treat it like so. For now, I don't know if this will be enough, but I have no choice.'
Thinking this, he raised his arm, pointing it to Ray as he spoke one word.
"Draw."
-WISH
In the same second, a blue card exuding light blue flames appeared before him, splitting in three.
Derek wasted no time, snatching the right card.
It was also the same direction he decided to go before unlocking Super Speed Perception.
He was hoping it was some sort of lucky charm.
[You have chosen a card]
[You have copied the attribute Intelligence]
[Your Intelligence stat will match that of Ray Palmer]
'Yes!'
This was exactly what he was hoping for. Not the vast knowledge of engineering Ray possessed, but instead the mind that enabled him to be so great.
This great mind that Derek would utilise better than the former ever could.
And he knew exactly where to start.
'First I'll need to wait till Thawne brings me…'
-RANG!!!
Derek's eyes rolled to the back of his skull as a shrieking ring pierced his mind.
This combined with the fact that his body had been pushed to the limits was all that was needed for him to completely lose consciousness, falling back, his head landing softly on the pillow.
And so, Derek fell into a well-deserved deep sleep.
***
'Everything is so…clear.'
Derek, currently with his eyes closed, no sound entering his ears, could feel his mind was…different.
Whether it was his thoughts being less cloudy or his brain operating almost like a computer, Derek felt like he was now operating a better and more advanced piece of machinery.
He could multitask far easier, contemplating different things at once while he dealt with mental challenges far quicker.
With this in mind, it would have taken him a fraction of the time to realise what the system meant by "Understanding" rather than the unknown amount of time he spent while slowing down the time around him.
Additionally, he could now recall facts from the Flash show far more easily.
This leap in his mind was so great that he couldn't handle the sudden change after copying the attribute, thus causing him to pass out.
But after a whole day of rest, not only was he feeling better mentally, but he was feeling greater than he ever had before.
'Status.'
Despite his eyes being closed, he could still see his status screen.

'It still pleases me to see that.'
Derek thought, a satisfied feeling spreading through his body as he stared at his Intelligence stat.
Just as he thought this, he felt a tap on his shoulder, snapping him out of his trance as he opened his eyes.
As he did, he was met with Caitlin giving him a thumbs up, prompting him to remove the earplugs from his ears.
"It's like we thought. Your connection with Eclipse is completely neurological. You don't rely on sight or sound to control it."
Cisco revealed as Derek commanded the spherical Eclipse floating beside him to merge with his shirt, which it did.
Derek, Caitlin, Cisco and Barry were currently in the Speed lab.
It was a large open space with computers to the side, its main function and purpose being the cylinder structure built into the walls which were used to test Barry's speed.
"It's fascinating. We don't know the limits of it, but so far it seems like it can adapt and form into anything you please." Barry followed.
"Yes, but more complex things like electronics or a car will prove difficult. It can form the shape but it can't operate like one." As Derek said this, they nodded.
"Maybe not something so advanced, but what about something like humanoid clones." Cisco, his tone growing more excited, added, to which Barry followed.
'Hmm, that's actually not a bad idea.'
If Derek could count on Star Labs for one thing, it was their ingenuity.
"And he doesn't need to construct a vehicle to the finest detail if he can already control it long distance with his mind."
"Exactly."
"They often can get like this." Caitlin chuckled as she rolled her eyes, Derek also smiling.
'Caitlin Snow…'
Derek stared at her as she jammed her fingers on the nearby computer.
She wore a professional dress and high heels, her brunette hair let down. With fair skin and rosy red lips, Derek was sure her Charm stat was well above average.
'I'm pretty sure she has a small crush on Barry during the early stage of the show.'
This point was only solidified when Derek remembered her muttering Barry's name when he saved them on the railroad.
But he knew this relationship never went anywhere.
In fact, she spends most of the show alone while the others move on with partners.
'What if…'
As he had a thought, he couldn't help but sigh helplessly upon remembering Felicity calling him a "Sweet Boy".
It was true too. Despite being 19, he had a skinny and frail body, his face seeming to have a child-like charm to it.
'Which is not a good thing.'
All he had going for him was the fact that he was pretty tall at 183cm (6') and had green eyes.
But in the next second, Derek scratched his head in annoyance.
'What the hell is wrong with me? I'm in a world where I can do anything. The sky's the limit. And now that I have this Charm stat, maybe I can find more ways than one to thrive.'
"Are you okay, Derek?"
Caitlin spoke upon seeing the boy dazed.
"Yeah. Sorry."
'But returning back to business…'
Derek's eyes darted to the three before him.
'I need to increase my understanding of them quickly. Especially Barry. I won't settle for anything less than the full-fledged Speedforce this time.'
"Everyone…"
All four of them turned to the entrance, only to see a man in a wheelchair enter.
"Can I have a moment with Mr Bond, please?" Wells asked, to which Cisco and Caitlin immediately compiled, nodding as they slowly left.
Barry followed a little later before his eyes scanned the two.
But soon, the room was empty with only the two of them.
'This is it. Allocate 6 points into Charm.'
"Thawne, do you have what I asked for?"
