Chapter 24: Derek Bond!

~Current time: 10:22PM~

"Has anyone seen Derek?"

"No. He's disappeared again."

"It's like the 4th time this week."

In the cortex of STAR Labs, Barry, Cisco and Caitlin chatted, preparing to leave for the day.

"Should a person with severe amnesia be spending so much time alone?" Barry asked, specifically to the Doctor of the group, Caitlin.

"Hm, it depends. I don't see any reason why it would worsen his mental condition…other than it being extremely lonely." She added at the end, her tone lowering but loud enough for the others to hear.

They took a second as they glanced at each other.

"Now that I think about it, we're the only people he knows. And the only time we've all spent with each other is for metahuman business." Cisco commented, breaking the silence.

"Well, maybe we can change that. Start with getting some drinks. I mean, how much do we really know about what kind of person he is." As Barry said this, Caitlin's head perked up.

"Oh, he's quite the gifted medical expert. He insists it's just a hobby but he was even able to surprise me with just a single conversation on the matter." She smiled like a child who finally found someone to play with.

"Yeah, I was there. He knows his stuff. I guess STAR Labs just keeps attracting geniuses even now. Well, almost." He finished, taking a nod at Barry who squinted his eyes in confusion.

"Oh, don't you remember? According to Derek, your only purpose of this group is as the muscle." Cisco mocked with an amused smile, Caitlin giggling as well.

"Haha, very funny." Barry sarcastically replied, rolling his eyes as he grabbed his jacket and made his way to the exit.

"Hey, it's fine. We make the toys and you help us with the magical powers that fell from the sky…"

-VRRR

-VUAM

Barry, Cisco and Caitlin all halted in their steps, their heart skipping a beat as a familiar noise instantly brought their breath to a stop.

Barry was the first to snap his head back, orange lightning crackling around him due to the speed he did.

His eyes intense, landed on a figure wearing a yellow form-fitting suit, a red lightning bolt adorned on his chest as a similarly coloured red glowed from his eyes.

"Flash…"

His voice, deep and thunderous, reverberated throughout STAR Labs, Caitlin and Cisco finally turning their heads to witness the sight.

"Catch me if you can."

-VRRR

-VUAM

Reverse Flash disappeared, leaving nothing but the crackle of his red lightning.

"Barry, wait…"

-CRACKLE

-WHOOSH

Caitlin tried to call out, but she was too late as Barry snatched his suit, disappearing as quickly as his opposite did.

"Shit…"

Cisco muttered. But despite being in a daze, he and Caitlin were quick to drop their belongings, racing to the computers before them.

Meanwhile, in the city, red and orange lightning darted through the streets, a blur of light that disturbed the natural darkness and silence of the night.

They zigzagged through the streets, making sharp turns, and even scaling buildings as they only seemed to be getting faster.

And though they moved at such speeds, to them, everything around them was slowed.

"Barry!"

Barry, in his Flash suit, heard Caitlin's voice in his ear as he chased the yellow-suited man in front of him.

They narrowly dodged lampposts and pedestrians, their senses heightened. The city blurred around them, a kaleidoscope of colours and sounds.

"Stop, you can't run in blindly."

"Barry, he might be leading you to a trap."

Cisco and Caitlin continued speaking despite Barry not replying, knowing Barry could hear them.

"No…"

They paused as Barry's gassed voice finally rang out.

"It isn't before. I've gotten faster…I can catch him!"

Barry spoke, noticing he was gaining on Reverse Flash who kept turning his head back slightly to peer at him.

Caitlin and Cisco glanced at each other.

"I mean…sure, he's breaking his record…but not by that much…" Cisco thought confusedly.

Though Caitlin agreed, they remained silent, letting things play out as they watched from their computers.

Barry, gritting his teeth, dug his feet into the ground, running with more intensity than he'd ever done before.

So much so that the glass on the buildings and cars SHATTERED as they passed.

With a burst of speed, he veered into an alley, the walls closing in as he chased the yellow blur.

'Just a little more…now!'

Barry leapt from the ground, tackling Reverse Flash as they tumbled out of control at frightening speeds, exiting the alleyway and finally coming to a stop on grassy plains.

"Huff…huff…huff…" Barry breathed heavily, Reverse Flash doing the same as they equally took a moment to groan with the soft grass on their back.

But eventually, they rolled to their feet, glaring at one another.

"How's that…I got faster…didn't you?" Flash commented with a smirk in between breaths.

As he did, he, Caitlin and Cisco couldn't help but ask themselves, 'Could this really be Wells?' in the back of their mind.

Not that Barry would accuse without knowing for sure. No, the plan they'd been working on for the past two days heavily relied on the element of surprise.

"Don't be so quick to your wits, Flash. After all, the night is still young. Have you still not noticed?"

Barry couldn't help but pause, taking his eyes off his foe for a second to look around.

As he did, his eyes loomed on a fortress-like stronghold on a hill behind them, somewhat separated from the city.

'What…why did he bring me to Iron Heights?'

Barry shot his head forth, assuming the worst.

"Tell me, Barry, have you ever heard of World War M?" Reverse Flash spoke, unclear if the question was rhetorical or not.

"It's a neat idea I've only heard rumours and stories about. But as they say, where there's smoke there's fire."

Barry squinted his eyes in confusion, but his anxiety only grew as Cisco spoke.

"Barry! A riot has broken out in Iron Heights. CCPD has just gotten the alert."

But Barry was given no time to connect the dots as Reverse Flash suddenly disappeared in a burst of red lightning, prompting him to do the same.

In a second, the scenery changed, only this time, they both halted inside Iron Heights.

Barry froze as he witnessed the scene before him.

They stood in the prison common area. The lights were red, deafening sirens blaring as the yells and riots of the inmates added to the chaos.

And though a few guards could be seen littered on the ground, dead and bleeding profusely, the inmates running around like wild animals, Barry stared at a crowd of figures behind Reverse Flash.

As the CRACKLE and VUAM of the two speedsters rang out, everyone froze as they turned their heads to the new arrivals.

'Who…are these people…'

The crowd before them consisted of figures who weren't regular humans.

A man levitating objects around him.

A figure with burning hands.

A man with bright red laser eyes.

A gas man.

A giant intelligent Gorilla, battling a similarly intelligent Shark.

A spotted female resembling a cheetah.

Several figures soared through the sky.

There were so many that Flash wasn't even able to catch them all, all duking it out before the Flash arrived.

"Barry…those people aren't inmates…some of those guys were in our pipeline until a few hours ago," Cisco mentioned, watching from the cameras of the prison he hacked.

Suddenly, Barry realised what the "M" stood for.

"Metas from all over the world and further. Some you're destined to meet in the future too. Flash, this is World War M!"

Metahumans.

A horde filled with bloodlusted Metahumans.

Some battled with an ominous red glow in their eyes inducing their rage, one he knew all too well. Some were merely protecting themselves, but most were breeding chaos.

But no matter what, they all looked at Flash with the same gaze, the same thought lingering in their mind.

An enemy.

-VRRR

-VUAM

Just like that, Reverse Flash disappeared, the sound that followed his movement acting almost like a bell for the battle to commence.

And so, it did.

Only this time, a good chunk of the herd separated, shooting toward Flash.

"Barry, get out of there."

-ZAP

"KHRM!!!"

Barry dropped to the ground, electricity piercing him from behind, causing him to seize uncontrollably for a few seconds before it finally let up.

"GAH!"

Barry exhaled sharply, looking back as he witnessed a familiar foe.

'Blackout.'

An electricity-based Meta with glowing red eyes as lightning-like veins coursing around his neck.

-WHOOSH

Barry wasted no time, running straight toward him and covering the distance in a fraction of a second, bashing his shoulder into Blackout's chest, sending him skidding across the ground.

"Guys, what do I do?" Barry pressed on his earpiece, looking around with his guard up.

"Taking them out one by one will take too long. You have to handle them in groups. We need to find a common weakness and deal with them that way." Cisco commented, prompting Barry to look around desperately.

He noted each different ability, ignoring the flashing lights and explosions.

"Their vision! A lot of these Metas need to see to use their ability." He exclaimed, shooting his head to the ceiling and staring at the flashing red lights.

-WHOOSH

In the same second, he disappeared, scaling the walls as he quickly approached the lights, smashing them easily, the entire prison ward turning pitch black in the next second.

"I've done it. Now what…"

Barry returned to the ground, hearing the battle pause for a few seconds as if something forced a lull.

However, he couldn't help but freeze.

It was dark, but his eyes were quick to adjust. It was for this reason that he could witness a giant shadowy entity rising from the ground, towering over him as it fashioned menacing red eyes.

'What the hell…'

There was one thing he forgot to note.

With the sheer amount of Meta humans here, it was highly likely that one Metas weakness meant another Metas strength.

'By turning off the lights, I just made some of them more powerful.'

With this, he watched the meta raise its shadowy limb, shooting forth as it struck him in the chest, sending him shooting through the prison and hitting the solid wall.

"Barry!"

The air was knocked out of his lungs as his eyes threatened to roll to the back of his skull.

He hit the ground hard, groaning as he struggled to breathe, much less speak.

"There's too many of them…" He finally let out while Cisco and Caitlin remained quiet as they wore expressions of discomfort.

"What…"

Barry paused, seeing specks of dust gather where he lay.

But he was quick to note it wasn't just dust. It was sand, shifting toward him like he was a magnet, swallowing his lower body.

He quickly got to his feet as best he could, but as he tried to run, he stumbled seeing his leg stuck inside.

And to make matters worse…

-ROAR

Barry's heart dropped as he witnessed a large figure shaped like a shark in the distance, staring right at him as he roared, prepared to charge like a bull.

"Barry get out there!"

Cisco yelled, for more than just the shark.

On his other computer, he was watching live CCTV footage of a familiar villain with both hands in the air.

"Flash…you killed my brother…I'll bury you in the same prison you put me in!"

"Weather Wizard…" Cisco muttered, recognising the man.

But more urgently, his heart sank as he witnessed the enormous meteor-like hail-stone looming over the prison, its size easily bigger than that of the entire prison.

And so, Cisco spoke, explaining the situation to Barry as the latter stared at the Shark about to charge.

"Wait a minute…do you have eyes on my dad, Cisco?!" Barry yelled, ignoring the threat before him for a second.

Cisco paused for a second, replying, knowing time was of the essence.

"I-I can't find him using the CCTV. There's too much going on."

"Barry, you need to get yourself to safety first. Weather Wizard is about the reduce the entire prison to rubble."

But they were too late.

"Die, Flash!" Weather Wizard yelled, throwing his hands down.

-BOOM!!!

Silence descended for a second as an ear-piercing boom echoed from up above.

It was the same kind of sonic boom that Barry would let out once he ran fast enough. But this time, even he was confused as he, like everyone else, couldn't help but look up.

"Guys…"

"The satellite is picking something up. Something fast…diving straight toward the prison." Caitlin mentioned while Cisco bashed on his keyboard.

"I've managed to access the aerial view to get a better look. It's…a person?"

He added, confused as he and Caitlin stared at the screen.

They witnessed an indistinguishable figure flipping through the air, controlling himself in the next second as he dived like an arrow straight toward the hailstone that lay between him and the prison.

With a flip, the figure moved upright, pulling back their feet with their hands, driving down his knees as he accelerated.

-BOOM

-CRACK

An ear-piercing BANG rang out like two icebergs crashed into each other, followed by a CRACK as Weather Wizard widened his eyes to see his meteor cracked in the middle, splitting in two.

"What the f…"

-ZIP

Weather Wizard wasn't even able to move, frozen as something emerged from the centre of his glacier, zipping past him like a firefly.

"Wait a minute…that's…" Caitlin muttered, her eyes widening like Weather Wizards' but for a different reason, accompanied by an unknowing smile upon realising.

-CRASH

Barry was the only one who could clearly see it with his speed perception.

A youth wearing a bandana and baseball cap, his bright emerald eyes outshined by the glow from the moon behind him, acting like a stage light to his entrance.

"About time you noticed…"

A voice entered their ears as they all smiled consecutively.

Meanwhile, the humanoid shark snapped his head upward, only to witness two knees before his eyes.

-BOOM

-CRUNCH

A sickening CRUNCH rang out like bones shattering in a crude manner as the two shot into the ground, dust kicking up as said dust and the moonlight combined created a surreal scene.

All Metas in the area raised their forearms at the intense winds but forced their eyes wide open in shock as they stared.

"The name's Bond…"

The figure mumbled, loud enough enough for the trio to hear as the dust cleared, revealing the bandana-wearing youth perched atop the shark who gurgled in its own blood, a dozen obsidian clones behind him.

Despite wearing a bandana and his cap casting a shadow over his eyes, one could still notice the large grin on his face.

And Barry could notice their eyes lock as he too smiled widely.

"Derek Bond!"
