Chapter 29: Reverse Flash Vs Derek Bond

[Quest Initiated!]

[Quest: Defeat the Reverse Flash]

[Quest difficulty: S]

[Description: Reverse Flash aims to take your life. Your goal is to not only survive but to also defeat him]

'Sounds doable enough.'

After he learned he could change the property of his Eclipse, in this instance, increase the weight of the small pellets by a thousandfold, just as fast as the speedster could run, he felt far more confident.

Although…

'I put all my strength into that punch and all it did was produce a miniscule amount of blood.'

Had it been a regular adult male, it would have easily shattered their skull. However, because it was a speedster, who had to have high durability to survive crashing into things at blurring speeds, it only did this much.

'In the system's terms, their stats would be labelled "Speedster" or "Speedforce", their favoured stat obviously speed but closely followed by durability and endurance.'

Nevertheless, this would be enough. His newfound strength and this pitch-black scene he created and didn't affect his enhanced Mirakuru senses would hopefully be enough to chip away at his foe for a little while.

A massive dome created from his Eclipse finally trapped them in complete darkness.

It was unclear where the dome started or where it ended, simply seeming like an endless void.

To this, Reverse Flash darts his glowing red eyes upwards, searching for the youth, only to find he could barely see 2 feet before him.

Additionally, he could tell Derek was no longer standing where he was previously as Thawne could no longer feel his looming presence of his.

"Hiding in the darkness? As expected of a coward." Thawne spat, his body vibrating at blurring speeds as the heavy pellets of Eclipse passed right through him, allowing him to stand freely once again.

He wiped the blood from the corner of his lip, looking around but to no avail.

'I can't see a thing. But that means he can't either. No, he wouldn't do it if he didn't hold some kind of advantage.'

"You're making excuses before you've even lost? Do you not believe in yourself, Thawne?"

Thawne turned to where the voice was coming from, his eyes landing on two snake-like emerald pupils, piercing through the darkness.

Without wasting a second, Thawne darted from his position, shooting toward them.

However…

-THUD

Once again, Thawne hit the ground hard, only this time he was face-first as he continued to skid a few feet.

'What on earth? What am I running on? It has no grip whatsoever.'

It was like he was running on ice. Like the ground was frictionless.

'Friction? What's that?'

"Falling over your feet?"

Thawne snapped his head to the side, swinging his vibrating hand, but was met with air.

-BANG!!!

-CRACK!!!

Emerging from the other side to where the man was facing, Thawne spat blood, his eyes threatening to pop out of his skull as Derek kicked the downed speedster in the ribs like a football.

A disturbing CRACK rang out as Thawne was sent shooting through the void, hitting the ground only to ricochet upward once again, his body flailing helplessly.

But Derek refused to let up, swinging his arms as if he were shadowboxing, discs of his Eclipse rising from the ground and launching like bullets, striking the desperate Thawne as he went.

-CRACK

-BANG

-SNAP

Finally, Thawne hit the wall of the dome back-first, his arms and legs spread out.

But as he focused his eyes, they widened as he witnessed dozens of discs following him, ready to bury him in an unrelenting barrage.

However, he was able to catch a glimpse of an opening, instantly leaping forward without waiting, successfully dashing to safety.

However, as he stopped, a shadowy figure loomed over him, catching his attention as he turned back.

'He baited me with that opening…how predictable.' A large grin appeared on his face as he moved the same second, driving his vibrating hand through the chest of the shadowy figure.

'What…'

Thawne paused, his eyes finally focusing only to find he'd attacked a humanoid obsidian-coloured thing.

-BLOP

Eclipse wrapped around the arm that Thawne shot through it, then his entire body as his heart dropped to find dozens of other clones emerging from the shadows and leaping at him.

-VUAM

-VRRR

Thawne breathed heavily, on one knee and gripping his bleeding shoulder as he phased through the pile the Eclipse had made on him.

And in the shadows, Derek watched this.

Only, his reaction to this wasn't what one would expect.

'What the hell is going on?' Derek asked himself with a frown.

He had long expected Thawne to escape this dome by phasing out since he still had no counter to that.

In fact, he created this dome solely to get a few good hits in, not expecting things to go like this.

With no answers, Derek decided to speak.

"What's wrong with you…what have you done? You're…slower."

The state of Thawne reminded Derek of how he was after fighting Savitar.

Depleted.

Or maybe as if he was conserving his speed.

Only, he knew nothing major like that had happened.

Hell, from what he knew, Thawne had been sitting on his ass since that day.

Too many things lined up perfectly, making Derek uneasy.

Something was afoot.

"You haven't noticed already? Or maybe you have? What exactly are you asking?"

It was clear that Thawne was only so eager to entertain this conversation because he was buying himself some time.

But Derek didn't care.

"I'm not completely clueless. For example, the Metas you kidnapped for World War M…you got them from another Earth, didn't you?"

The Multiverse.

An infinite number of Earths all occupying the same place in space but vibrating at a different frequency so they couldn't see one another.

It was a common concept in the Flash show. It was how they introduced many of the beloved characters like Supergirl and Black Lightning.

Flash would later learn to travel to these other worlds after running fast enough.

'But how the hell was Thawne able to go that fast?'

"I knew it. Smart, you are. I even stole the concept of World War M from another Earth."

Derek scoffed upon hearing this.

"You're fast enough to leisurely travel between Earths yet you can't go back to your own Timeline?"

"You know it's not as simple as that. My timeline must first be restored before I can return by undoing my mistake 15 years ago, otherwise, I'll return to a future even I don't recognise."

Derek seemed to have touched a sore spot as the mock in Thawne's voice disappeared upon him explaining this.

"Besides, the speed I gained was only a side effect of the true purpose I aimed to gain."

'So I was right? He did gain a speed buff.'

Not only that, but also a speed buff that resulted in his slower speed now.

There was only one thing Derek could think of that fit this description.

'The Velocity Serums.'

They were a sequence of Serums created by Hunter Zolomon, or Zoom, the villain of Season 2 of the Flash.

It allowed one to temporarily access the Speedforce, giving them superspeed.

Though the first batch, Velocity 1-5, did increase his speed, they also caused cellular degeneration, making death imminent.

Though Caitlin used her expertise to create Serums 6-10, finally perfecting it with Velocity X, Derek doubted it was what Thawne was using.

Not only was it addictive and unpredictable even in its final state, Velocity X, Thawne said his boosted speed was only a side effect when that was the whole point of the Velocity drug.

Additionally, Velocity X wasn't known to deplete your speed which was what was happening here.

'So what? What has he done? If speed that allowed him to travel to other earth was simply a byproduct, what was his main goal?'

But as Derek thought this, he witnessed Thawne speed his arm into his pocket, pulling out an indistinguishable item and tossing it into his mouth.

'What the…'

"Time's up, brat."

-VRRR

-VUAM

Thawne's shoulder healed in a matter of seconds as he zapped around the dome, searching for Derek.

'Shit…'

Derek instantly commanded his Eclipse to lose its property of friction, however, he watched in awe as Thawne simply phased his feet so that they sunk a few inches into the concrete, only then kicking them up as he continued to run unbothered.

And eventually…

"KHRM!!!"

Derek let out an awkward noise as Thawne shot his hand into the boy's throat, wrapping his fingers around his neck and raising him into the air, the both of them suddenly appearing outside the dome.

"I've been fighting with crutches all along…allow me to show you why I'm feared throughout the Timeline."

Derek widened his eyes, his strength proving useless as he failed to break free from Thawne's grasp.

But it was too late to even try, because in the next second, Thawne ran, pining Derek to the ground as he did.

The boy was dragged through the ground so fast that the very concrete was destroyed, a large trail of craters being formed.

The broken concrete cut away at his skin, his clothes being torn to shreds despite their toughness.

It wasn't until Thawne came to a stop that Derek could have a moment to breathe, his clothes torn as his Eclipse tried to frantically repair it around him.

But it was too slow as Thawne stood him up, unleashing a relentless barrage of super-speed punches.

-BANG

-BANG

-BANG

-BANG

-BANG

From the face to the gut and even his spine, Thawne sped around Derek, hitting him in places he knew would hurt.

But as he circled back, he witnessed Derek's lips move.

"Explode…"

-KABOOM!!!

The entire area was engulfed in flames, an explosion swallowing everything in sight.

The bright orange light lit the small area in the city they were in and in the next second, silence once again descended as the flames disappeared, leaving dark scorch marks and the craters caused by Derek's body.

But in the distance, behind one of the distant excavators, a boy lay, his back against the piece of machinery, breathing heavily.

"Let me out. I can help you."

As Derek tried his best to control his breathing, the cuts, bruises and burns around his body healing at a visible rate, Savitar kneeled beside him.

"Yeah, right."

Derek let out, not sparing him a second.

"I can wipe the floor with Thawne no matter how juiced up he is and you know it." Savitar retorted but failed to convince Derek.

"Just sit tight and watch me."

"Watch you do what? Those tricks you're pulling with your Eclipse won't work for long."

It was true.

Increasing the property of heat on his Eclipse so that it would explode did him as much damage as it did Thawne.

"I know. But I'm just buying time."

Savitar didn't ask any further since they both knew he was aware of what Derek would say next.

With a grin, Derek turned and stared in the distance.

He couldn't see what he was searching for, but he could feel it.

The Speedforce.

"Buying time till he arrives."
