Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Misty and Jack Welles
Inside the car, Alex Knight noticed that Gloria's anger, stirred up by Rebecca, had mostly subsided. He suggested, "Let's go. First, let's find a doctor to install my cyberware."
"Okay, I know a Ripperdoc..."
"No need. I'll give directions, and you drive. I know a Ripperdoc."
Gloria had just begun to speak when Alex interrupted her, starting the car with the old-fashioned key ignition.
"What? You know a Ripperdoc here too! Aren't you new to Night City?" Gloria was still very curious about how Alex knew so much, even though he had never been to Night City.
"It is indeed my first time here, but in this city, I know many people and am aware of many things. It's just that they don't know me yet, like you, Ms. Gloria."
Alex squinted at the red-haired woman. She was asking too many questions. How was he supposed to answer? Was he supposed to say that he knew this Ripperdoc when he was V?
"Gloria Martinez, 33 years old, a technician, or rather, a contractor, at Night City Emergency Medical Center."
"Your daily work involves clearing bodies of those who died from various accidents in Night City. Of course, you also take advantage of your job to privately remove cyberware or firearms and ammunition from the deceased and sell them on the black market."
"Please, stop talking!" Gloria, whose past was almost completely exposed, eagerly reached out to cover Alex's mouth.
"Alright, alright, I won't say any more. And don't be so suspicious. Now, drive according to the route I tell you," Alex said with a helpless tone, grasping Gloria's wrist.
Actually, Alex had a good impression of Gloria.
In the cyber era, where familial bonds were weak, good mothers like Gloria were almost nonexistent.
Everything she did was for her son, David. Gloria didn't want David to remain at the bottom of Night City like her. She hoped David could have a brighter future.
So, Gloria sold stolen items from the deceased on the black market, using the money earned to send David to Arasaka Academy, hoping that one day he could make a name for himself at Arasaka, rise to corporate high-level management, stand at the top of Arasaka Tower, and become a big shot in Night City.
But what if he became a high-level corporate executive? He would still be a dog under capital's thumb. Every year in Night City, some 'big shots' from corporations were cemented and thrown into the bay.
Right, Aunt Mei!
However, since his timeline of crossing over was so early, he could change the unfortunate fates of some people and alter the endings he disliked.
Sasha's matter should be coming soon.
Sigh, I'm overthinking. I should focus on giving directions.
As an area he frequently drove recklessly through in the game, the roads of Little Chinatown were not unfamiliar to Alex.
Driving left from Ellison Plaza, turning into an alley, one could reach Afterlife Bar. Driving straight ahead was Super Skyscraper H10, where V would live two years later.
Of course, he wasn't going to these places now.
Alex directed Gloria to drive the car into an alley.
They stopped the car in front of a shop glowing with pink lights.
He looked out of the passenger window.
Several beautiful women in revealing clothes, under the pink lights behind the glass display window, twisted their seductive bodies like snakes. Their alluring movements and glimpses of skin constantly attracted passersby to stop and linger.
'Hmm,' Alex watched the pink ladies' exotic dance with an appreciative gaze, stroking his chin and nodding in satisfaction.
Big breasts, long legs, slender waists, perky butts, and beautiful faces that met the aesthetics of upright apes.
This is more like it. It's the cyber era; even sex doll faces shouldn't look as ugly as they were modeled in the game.
"The Ripperdoc you're looking for isn't in a strip club, is he?" Gloria said irritably, looking at Alex's lecherous expression.
"How could it be? Wait for me here. I'm going to find the doctor." Alex finished speaking, picked up his neural implant, got out of the car, and walked directly into the shop across from the strip club.
Gloria saw the shop's name from inside the car.
**Misty's Esoterica**
Alex pushed open the glass door and entered the familiar-looking shop.
Dozens of electronic candles were scattered on the floor, tables, and next to ornaments in the room. They burned with an unquenchable glow, illuminating the entire small house. Ancient porcelain placed on shelves, a four-armed deity statue on the altar, and skulls of various colors made the entire room exude a mysterious aura.
Looking at Misty, who stood behind the counter with a heavily made-up face, a gleam flashed in Alex's eyes.
**[Misty Olszewski]**
- **Age:** 23
- **Identity:** Occult enthusiast
- **Cyberware coverage:** 14%
- **Introduction:** Owner of the Esoterica, Jack Welles's good girl.
- **P.S.:** Want a Tarot reading?
"Customer, are you here for a divination or a stellar consultation?" Misty asked when she saw a new face enter.
Misty's voice was very soft and pleasant to listen to.
"I'm here to see Doctor Viktor. My name is Alex, and Jack Welles referred me. He said Doctor Viktor is the best Ripperdoc in Night City."
Alex had a smile on his face.
Although he hadn't met Jack Welles in Night City yet, he still mentioned Jack in front of Misty, as it was impossible for a stranger like him to know that Viktor's clinic was in the basement behind the Esoterica on his first visit.
To get Misty to cooperate, there had to be a reasonable excuse.
"Oh! Jack." Misty's tone unconsciously became a little resentful.
As someone who grew up with Jack since childhood, Misty understood Jack very well.
Although he was burly and strong, and his face looked very mature, he was internally a big boy who would never grow up, always fantasizing that one day he could become a big shot in Night City, a legend. For this, he kept doing dangerous tasks that could enhance his reputation.
Recently, Jack had been busy with something again, and she hadn't seen him for a month and three days.
This thought led her into past memories.
By the time Misty came back to her senses, she had already left the customer waiting for a long time.
"Sorry, customer. Doctor Viktor is in the underground clinic behind the door." Misty pointed to the open back door.
"Thank you."
Walking into the space behind the Esoterica, Alex directly equipped the neural implant. He wasn't really looking for Old Vick to perform an implant surgery; after all, he could still remove it through the system. If it were a real surgery, the neural implant would truly become a part of his body.
Walking down the sunken stairs, he took out his identity chip and inserted it into the neural port on his neck.
**[Identity information overwritten]**
**[Biological signal recognized]**
**[Contact added - Sasha]**
**[Cat Head: Mysterious handsome guy, let's chat sometime~( ̄▽ ̄~)~]**
**[Alex: Thanks, Sasha]**
Without waiting for a reply, Alex walked down the sunken steps, crossed the barred gate, and entered a dimly lit underground clinic.
A familiar scene appeared before him.
Doctor Viktor was holding his tablet, watching a boxing match that seemed to never end.
**[Viktor Vector]**
- **Age:** 47
- **Identity:** Ripperdoc
- **Cyberware coverage:** 26%
- **Introduction:** The best Ripperdoc in Watson District, Night City veteran, Jack Welles's old friend.
- **P.S.:** My godfather, please accept my bow!
Doctor Viktor paused the video when he saw someone enter and said in a mature, steady voice:
"Alright, Misty has told me everything."
"Tell me, child, are you looking for me to install cyberware or..."
"Doctor Viktor, I'd like to know about the types of implants you can provide and their prices. It would be convenient for me to choose the implant I want when I have enough money."
"Okay, I'll send you a data file. You can take your time looking at it on the chair over there."
After sending the data, Doctor Viktor went back to his workstation to watch his boxing match.
Old Vick was truly a taciturn middle-aged man when facing a stranger like himself.
Sitting on the blue surgical chair full of traces of time, Alex opened the file package Old Vick had sent.
- **Self-ICE 5115**
- **Newton Module 15329**
- **Military Technology Parallel Line Type 3 25539**
- **Kiroshi Optics 'Harbinger' 51150**
- **Smart Link 1378**
- **Optical Camo 15329**
- **Heavy Subdermal Armor 5215**
Well, as expected, I didn't see the Sandevistan Qian T 'Reality Warp' or some other powerful implants.
Reality is not like a game.
This kind of military-grade cyberware control certainly wasn't something a Ripperdoc could easily get.
Or perhaps Old Vick had such high-level implants, but didn't show them because he was a stranger to Old Vick right now?
To put it in game terms, it's a rare item that can only be unlocked when the favorability is high enough.
However, Optical Camo and Heavy Subdermal Armor, which are cyberware that can increase survival chances, are worth considering for purchase.
But he had to first procure all the supplies needed by the Hunter, and then see how much money he had left.
After staying in the clinic for almost an hour, Alex felt it was time to leave. Seeing Old Vick still engrossed in the boxing match, he didn't say goodbye.
Leaving the underground clinic. After bidding Misty farewell, Alex went out and found the yellow G240, pulled open the passenger door, and got in.
"You finished the surgery so quickly! This doctor's skills are good. I can't even see any surgical marks from the implant. Did you put on artificial skin?"
"Don't ask too many questions, Gloria. Next, I need to buy some clothes and daily necessities. The things I need are varied, so find a larger shopping mall."
