Cyberpunk: Mysteries World

Chapter 2: 2

John Smith stood up, holding his head. He wasn't sure if he was hallucinating, but the pain just now had felt so real, and the motionless skeleton in front of him seemed to confirm that all this was indeed real.

He slowly raised the axe in his hand and tried to say, "Weapon enhancement." As the words left his mouth, a milky white halo appeared on the weapon.

This made John even more certain that what he had just experienced was not an illusion. He aimed to chop the skeleton on the ground with force, and the axe easily split the skeleton's bones, much more easily than when he had chopped off the skeleton's neck earlier.

He looked up with the axe in his hand, but the white halo grew smaller and smaller, eventually disappearing completely.

John chopped the skeleton with the axe again but found it was a little difficult and did not break the skeleton's bones.

At this point, he roughly understood the function of this special power. It seemed that it could temporarily strengthen weapons, but the time was very short, and the effect disappeared after a while.

John was not surprised by this kind of supernatural power, as he knew that many people in the wealthy areas had supernatural powers and magic, making them the ruling class of this world who controlled most of the wealth and arms.

Occasionally, there were a few people with special abilities in the civilian areas, but they were all recruited by the wealthy to serve them. However, the civilians had never learned magic because the rich did not allow it.

Most poor people like John were labeled the moment they were born in the slums and could not rid themselves of it throughout their lives. They weren't even allowed to enter civilian areas, let alone rich areas.

This phenomenon was not only due to wealth but also because supernatural powers were rarely seen in the slums, let alone magic.

After all, even guns were not allowed in the slums, let alone resistance, while everyone in the rich areas had a flying vehicle and lived a luxurious life that the poor couldn't even imagine.

However, this superpower did not bring him surprise but fear, as it would bring him disaster. Although civilians with superpowers would be recruited, the rich would not allow the poor to have superpowers. If they found out that the poor had superpowers, they would immediately send bionic people to eliminate them.

John decided not to tell anyone about his superpower, otherwise, he would be killed. No one could fight against those consortiums. They were like gods in this world, controlling everything.

After brushing off the dirt on his body, he walked deeper into the dungeon. When he reached the corner, he picked up the empty arrow and put it back into the quiver.

This was essential for survival, so none could be wasted easily. Although he had just shot it empty, he could practice a few more times.

After John turned a corner, he found that the passage on this side was also empty. It seemed that there was only the skeleton, which was a relief, as otherwise, he might never wake up again.

At the end of this passage, there was a stone tablet with the words: "To reach the end of the first floor, you need to pass through death and traps, through illusions and weirdness, and you will eventually reach it."

After observing for a while, he guessed some of the things he might encounter, but he could only guess based on the literal meaning and had no idea what he would encounter specifically.

As he continued to move forward, he vaguely heard some low groans. The sound seemed to come from deep underground, which made him feel chilly.

This made him think of a dead body, as if a person who had been dead for many years had crawled out of the ground, ready to appear behind him at any moment and bite off his head.

John picked up the bow and arrow without hesitation. Although the flesh and blood skeletons were not too powerful, he could not guarantee that all monsters were as easy to deal with as skeletons. It would definitely be better to be cautious in such a scary place.

After slowly walking around another corner, he saw zombies slowly walking towards him. The zombies moved very slowly, even staggering a little. Their arms and legs were highly rotten, revealing legs with a metallic luster, as if these zombies were once transformed humans.

But the zombie's rotten face almost made John vomit on the spot. He even saw a worm crawling in and out of the zombie's mouth, and its eyes were constantly wriggling. He knew without thinking that there were worms inside.

After dry heaving a few times, John didn't dare to waste any more time. Although the zombies walked very slowly, if he delayed any longer, they would probably reach him.

Restraining his nausea and fear, John aimed the arrow at the zombie's head and shot without hesitation, but the arrow missed.

He had never practiced archery, so his accuracy was not very good. Fortunately, he had a whole pot of arrows, so he could shoot twenty arrows and miss many times without any problem.

Now the slow-moving zombies were perfect living targets for practice, but he would rather face a skeleton, as this terrifying and disgusting thing almost drove him crazy.

John took a few steps back and drew the bow again, but this time he aimed not at the zombie's head, but at its chest.

Although the arrow deviated a little after being shot, it still hit the zombie's waist. However, he was not pleased by this. The zombie continued to move forward as if it had not been hit.

It seems that attacking the body cannot cause effective damage to zombies. Maybe, like skeletons, only attacking the head or knocking the head off will work.

John pulled the bow again, and this time he did not step back. Instead, he aimed at the zombie's head from a relatively close distance, and then the arrow hit the zombie's head accurately.

But the arrow only hit the zombie's head and did not penetrate too deep. The zombie was still moving towards him slowly and steadily, while making low groans.

Seeing that the zombie was about to reach him, he quickly stepped back a few steps. At this moment, the zombie suddenly pounced on him.

The zombie's hands almost brushed past his face, and he could even smell a strong stench of decay, which made his stomach churn.

But now was not the time to be disgusted. If he didn't dodge, it would be dangerous. John immediately took a few steps back and avoided the zombie's hand grabbing his ankle.

He didn't expect that the zombies would suddenly pounce on him after getting close. Their previous behavior was like they were deliberately trying to lull the enemy into a false sense of security before attacking.

John backed away while staring at the zombie. The zombie slowly got up and continued to walk towards him, as if the action just now had never happened.

Seeing this, he could only shoot an arrow and retreat a few steps. However, after several arrows, none could penetrate the zombie's head, and his arms were already a little sore.

Although theoretically, he had twenty arrows, his arms were sore after he had shot only a few. It seemed that he could only shoot about ten at most.

John took a few steps back and whispered, "Weapon enhancement." This was his only way to deal with zombies. He didn't know how many times he could use this ability in a short period, so he didn't dare to use it indiscriminately.

After raising the arrow and aiming it at the zombie's head, he did not shoot immediately. Instead, he walked forward a few steps, got closer, and when he was sure of his shot, he suddenly let go.

This time, the arrow with a white halo instantly shot at the zombie's head and penetrated deeply with a "thud" sound. Although it did not penetrate completely, half of the arrow body had already sunk in.

The zombie suddenly stopped, then fell straight back, and hit the ground with a bang, without any more movement.

The bugs on the zombie's body quickly crawled out and scattered around. John was so startled that he quickly stepped back, fearing these things might be poisonous.

Fortunately, the bugs were just crawling around unconsciously and soon crawled into the cracks in the blue bricks of the dungeon. He then breathed a sigh of relief.
