This is also the reason why Panam asked V to help her get the vehicle back in the original work.
David's lips twitched. He scratched the back of his head and said, "Dad, maybe I should become a man like the wind, like you."
Arthur glanced at him briefly and then plopped the helmet onto David's head without a second thought.
Though the car wasn't particularly precious, for the homeless, giving away a vehicle was the highest form of sincerity. For people like them, a car meant everything—it was their mobility, their livelihood, their security. Losing it was like losing an arm, a leg, or their very identity.
Arthur's eyes hardened as he spoke. "The best I can do if I get thrown away is to stand up and clear out all those bastards. But you? If you get tossed aside, you might not even make it to see the color of your brain."
There were thousands of different ways to get somewhere, but safety was always the priority. Driving recklessly in a place like Night City could bring your loved ones to tears.
In a city like this, where even NCPD pursuits could happen without warning, safety was never a given. If something went wrong, Arthur knew his son might end up facing the King of Hell and wouldn't even get to experience passionate moments with Adam Hammer.
As the two of them drove their motorcycles toward the entrance of Arasaka Academy, Arthur found a place to park and threw the key to David as soon as they stopped.
Arthur wasn't particularly fond of motorcycles. While the wind against his face felt good, he preferred the stability of four-wheeled vehicles. The main reason was simple: motorcycles didn't offer enough storage space. As his tasks became more complicated in the future, Arthur would need a vehicle that could carry more equipment—something sturdier, with better armor, able to withstand various types of terrain. A motorcycle was too limiting.
"Why?" David asked instinctively, a slight confusion appearing on his face. A premonition set in, and he suddenly looked surprised.
Arthur smiled and nodded. "I gave it to you. A belated birthday gift after all these years. Don't blow it up. This is a token of friendship from the wanderers."
David's eyes widened, his surprise turning into a smile. He took the key and slipped it into his waistband, making sure to keep it safe.
Just then, a middle-aged man wearing glasses approached the entrance of Arasaka Academy. Upon seeing David, the man stopped, turned, and walked over.
"Hello?" Arthur was about to say something more to David when he heard the man's voice, turning toward him in confusion.
The man looked polite enough, wearing glasses and a suit with the Arasaka logo, but something about him felt off. He had the look of someone used to making himself seem important.
"Hello, are you David's father?" the man asked, his tone respectful but tinged with an air of pride that made Arthur instinctively wary.
Arthur nodded. "That's right. I've been out of town for some treatment, but I just got back to Night City."
The man's expression shifted to one of understanding. "Ah, I see. Actually, I wanted to talk to you about compensating for the incident where David caused some damage to our Mewtwo equipment."
Arthur scratched his chin as he recalled the situation. It was before he'd returned—David had used a virus from a doctor to sabotage some equipment at Arasaka Academy.
"Hmm, I actually wanted to discuss a few things with your school as well," Arthur began. "This isn't the place for such talks though. If you'll follow me, I think we can find somewhere better."
The principal looked around at their surroundings, clearly uncomfortable with the location, before apologizing. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to treat you poorly. Please, follow me to my office."
Arthur looked back at David and waved before following the principal inside.
David scratched the back of his head, indifferent. He knew his father could always find a way to solve even the most complicated situations. If things didn't work out at Arasaka Academy, David figured he could always follow his father into the cyberpunk lifestyle. Compared to the corporate world, David felt he would be more suited for the dangerous life on the edge.
This was a common thought among the youth—people who went to war at a young age often had the illusion that it would never be them who ended up dead. This illusion was shattered when they experienced real pain, the kind that made your hands tremble and your body scream for relief. It was only then that the reality of the world hit them.
After a short while, Arthur and the principal arrived at his office. The principal led Arthur inside and offered him a seat, being polite but also very careful not to be overly familiar.
He even prepared a cup of tea for Arthur, who accepted it with a nod. Arthur took a sip and sighed with a smile. "Ah, I haven't tasted this for a while. The tea in Night City is worse than pot water."
The principal smiled, seemingly pleased. "This is tea from the Neon Mainland. I don't have much of it, but it's special."
Arthur nodded. He knew the value of being connected—one of the perks of being a corporate dog was access to resources that others didn't have, even cyberpunks. When Gloria had visited the principal's office, he hadn't even poured her a glass of water, a reminder that respect in Night City could often be bought.
"Actually," Arthur said, taking another sip, "I came here today to discuss something important. Your school doesn't have any dormitories."
The principal blinked in confusion. "Why would anyone need to stay in Night City? Thanks to public transportation, even those living in the Badlands can make it to school in under an hour. Besides, land in the city is incredibly valuable. Building dormitories would cost a fortune."
Arthur leaned forward. "The problem is that the gangs in Night City are growing stronger, and crime is becoming more rampant. If things continue like this, it will only get worse. The gangs are not equipped to handle situations like this."
The principal nodded slowly, agreeing with the point. Arthur continued, "For the safety of the students, we should build dormitories within the school. That way, they can stay there during the week, and then go home on weekends. It will provide a sense of security for everyone."
The principal paused, considering Arthur's words carefully. He had seen gangs fighting in the streets, and the constant gunfire in certain parts of the city left him uneasy.
"I understand," the principal finally said, after a long pause. "But it would be an immense cost. The property prices are through the roof."
Arthur was unphased. "You're in a good position to make a change. With the growing crime rates and instability, it would be a smart investment to ensure the safety of your students."
The principal rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "I'll take it into consideration. It might be the best solution."
Arthur stood, preparing to leave. He nodded to the principal, who bowed his head slightly. As he turned to leave, he couldn't help but think that, despite the overwhelming odds in Night City, there was always a way to navigate through the chaos, whether by diplomacy or sheer force.
The future was uncertain, but Arthur was determined to carve out a place for himself and his family, no matter what.
