Chapter 25: The Frightened Little Girl

After finishing the barbecue, Ren and the little girl started eating watermelon to cool off.

"Yummy~~" The little girl, holding a piece of watermelon, swayed her dangling feet contentedly and giggled at Ren and Jada.

"If you like it, eat more." Jada smiled gently as she watched the content little girl, handing her another piece of watermelon.

For her, just watching the little girl eat watermelon made her feel full.

Ren also passed a slice to the little girl.

Looking at the watermelon in her hands, then back at her parents, the little girl hesitated and asked, "Aren't you eating?"

"Mommy isn't hungry, go ahead," Jada said with a smile.

But Ren didn't put it quite so straightforwardly.

He felt something was missing at the moment.

Summer, night, barbecue...

Right, it was missing ghost stories!

A light bulb went off for Ren.

He suddenly spoke in a deep voice to the one and a half women present: "It's not that I don't want to eat, but, Daddy is scared... When I was a child, something very scary happened while I was eating watermelon. Even now, I get the chills just seeing watermelon... Do you... want to hear it?"

Although the ghost story hadn't started yet, the little girl was still young. Just hearing such a deep, hoarse voice made her instinctively shrink her little head.

She was about to refuse when she heard Jada frown and say, "Ren, Yueyue is still young, she might get scared and not go to the bathroom at night!"

The little girl was at that so-called haughty age.

She was very concerned about others' opinions at this age, and now her mom had called her young! And said she'd be too scared to go to the bathroom!

This made the self-proclaimed grown-up little girl's face turn red on the spot, and she declared in the loudest voice she could muster, "I, I'm not scared at all!"

O( ̄ヘ ̄o#)

With that, the little girl tossed her head, causing her ponytail to flick, crossed her arms, and said proudly, "Yueyue is all grown up now! Not scared of ghost stories! Actually, it's Mommy who's scared, isn't it? Afraid you won't dare to go to the bathroom at night after hearing it!"

Boy, what a temper.

Hearing this, Jada laughed, considering teaching this cheeky little one a lesson.

But, it was her own daughter after all, and even though the little girl's words were infuriating, Jada couldn't bring herself to be harsh, so she continued along with what the little girl had said: "Yes, Mommy is scared, so could Yueyue please not let Mommy listen?"

"Ha ha." Seeing Jada act this timidly, Ren couldn't help but laugh.

This brought both Jada and the little girl's eyes towards him.

Jada glared at him discontentedly.

It was all his doing, and he even had the nerve to laugh!

So, Jada asked with a fake smile, "What are you laughing at?"

"I just remembered something happy." Seeing Jada's expression, Ren shuddered subconsciously.

"What happy thing?"

"Ah ha ha." Ren scratched his face awkwardly.

He felt that continuing this conversation might lead to unpleasant outcomes, so he quickly changed the subject and looked at the little girl: "So, Yueyue, do you still want to... never mind, your mom is right, this story isn't for kids. See, even your mom is scared, you definitely can't handle it."

The little girl was about to give up after Jada's persuasion, but now Ren had challenged her, and she insisted, "I want to listen!"

Then she turned to Jada, "Mommy, if you're scared, you can go inside alone. Such a big person scared of a ghost story, how timid! Hmph!"

(╬▔皿▔)

Jada, her forehead throbbing with veins, decided then that since the little girl wanted to listen so badly, even if she cried wanting to go inside later, she'd have to let her listen to the end!

With that in mind, she glared fiercely at Ren.

Seeing they were ready, Ren cleared his throat and began in a low voice, "I remember when I was ten years old, it was a very hot summer, especially inside the house, so I decided to go out under the shade to cool off. Just as I opened the door, I saw a big watermelon right there..."

"But at the time,

I didn't care whose it was, so I just took the watermelon and ran to the shade and started eating it, and even..."

At this point, it wasn't yet the scary part of the story, so the little girl still had time to eat watermelon, spitting out the seeds as she ate.

"That's right, spitting out seeds, just like you, Yueyue!" Ren suddenly pointed out, raising his voice, which startled the little girl into dropping her watermelon.

"Then I felt a cold breeze blowing by my ear..."

As the story continued, tears filled the little girl's eyes, and she looked around fearfully.

Seeing the little girl's frightened look, Jada couldn't hold back anymore and quickly picked her up: "No, no, Yueyue, Mommy is scared, let's go back quickly."

"Mmm, yeah!"

The little girl had wanted to leave but was too proud to say so.

Now that her mom suggested it, she quickly nodded.

Because she wasn't scared at all! She was just going along with it for her mom's sake, she was too big for that!

"Sigh..." Ren stretched out his hand to stop them.

But they didn't stop; instead, they ran even faster.

Watching their retreating backs, Ren looked around at all the mess and sighed, "That girl did it on purpose, right? At least help me clean up a bit, all this trash, I'm gonna be feeding mosquitoes out here for a long time."

"Never mind, if you want something done right, do it yourself." Ren sighed.

Feeling that the two were too heartless, they had promised to help before they ate.

But obviously, Jada and the little girl didn't know Ren's complaints.

Jada took the little girl to the bathroom for a bath.

Then, worried the little girl wouldn't dare to sleep alone, she stayed with her until she fell asleep before returning to her own room.

Seeing Ren lying on the ground playing with his phone, Jada kicked him before going to bed.

"Ouch, why?" Ren looked at her angrily.

Seeing Ren still daring to look at her, Jada glared fiercely and snapped, "What are you looking at! Look what you did, scaring the little girl!"

Without waiting for Ren's response, she turned over, covered herself with the air conditioning blanket, and went to sleep.

Ren looked at Jada, muttered a few words, then got up and decided to go stay in the little girl's room for a while.

Honestly, he regretted telling the ghost story, which was just a spur-of-the-moment idea.

Though it's said children are for playing with, playing too much isn't good either.
