daring love

Chapter 2: important

As I scanned the crowded room, my eyes locked onto the stranger again, but before I could get a better look, Lila, my assistant and partner-in-crime, tapped me on the shoulder.

"Lexi, what's got you so captivated?" she asked, her brown curls bouncing with each nod. Her bright hazel eyes sparkled with amusement, and I felt a flush rise to my cheeks.

I hesitated, unsure how to respond. Where had the stranger gone? I swept the room again, but he seemed to have vanished into thin air.

Lila raised an eyebrow, her gaze following mine. "Seriously, girl? You're spacing out on me. What's going on?"

I shook my head, chuckling. "Nothing, nothing. Just...distracted." My breathing slowed, and I turned my attention back to Lila.

She gave me a knowing look. "Distracted? By what? Or should I say, by whom?" Her voice was laced with teasing, and I rolled my eyes.

"Lila, focus. Why were you calling me?" I asked, deflecting her question.

Her expression turned serious, and she consulted her phone. "I've been trying to reach you for hours, Lexi. You have a meeting with the decoration team, and they're waiting for you."

I groaned, feeling a pang of guilt. "I'm so sorry, Lila. I got caught up in...stuff." I trailed off, still wondering where the stranger had gone.

Lila shot me a skeptical look. "Stuff, huh? Well, let's get to that meeting before they send out a search party."

I nodded, tucking my phone into my pocket. As we made our way to the meeting room, I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd just missed something – or someone – important.

As we emerged from the meeting room, I let out a deep sigh of exhaustion. Lila stretched her petite frame, arching her back and extending her arms overhead.

"That was a tiresome one," she declared, her voice dripping with relief.

"I wouldn't say less," I agreed, grabbing my water bottle from the table and taking a refreshing sip. The cool liquid soothed my parched throat, and I felt a slight rejuvenation.

Lila's eyes sparkled mischievously as she gazed at me. "How about we go celebrate?" she suggested, her voice laced with excitement.

I stared at her, knowing full well that she was a party animal. Her love for celebration was contagious, and I couldn't help but laugh at her enthusiasm.

"Don't look at me like that," she said, grinning. "We've been working non-stop for weeks, and we deserve to let loose."

I shook my head, still chuckling. "You're right, but..." I began, and Lila groaned, anticipating my caveat.

"We aren't done yet," I reminded her. "We need to make sure everything is perfect for the gala. After that, we can party like there's no tomorrow."

Lila rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "You're such a perfectionist, Lexi."

I shrugged. "Someone has to keep you in check."

Our banter was interrupted by the sound of my phone buzzing. I glanced at the screen and saw a text from the catering team.

"Looks like the catering team needs a confirmation on the menu," I said, showing Lila the message.

She nodded. "Go ahead and respond. I'll start reviewing the decoration layout."

As we dove back into work mode, I couldn't help but feel grateful for Lila's friendship and partnership. We made an unstoppable team, and I knew that together, we could conquer any challenge that came our way.

With renewed energy and focus, we tackled the remaining tasks on our list. The hours flew by in a flurry of activity, but eventually, we finished everything.

As we packed up our things and headed out of the office.
