Dark Mage: Dead Guy in My Head, Send Help

Chapter 5: CHAPTER 4

Now I understand why the maid packed my things before coming here. Hah! They thought I wouldn't notice? I'm not blind. But why did they have to make a secret out of it?

Was my father really that afraid that I wouldn't want to come here? Anything is possible. I told him last time that I wouldn't go to any stupid hospital anymore! That's why he got scared.

But that's a shame. This isn't a hospital, but a school of magic—a completely different matter. They should have told me so, instead of keeping secrets. And at first glance, it's much more interesting here than at home.

It's just a pity that we arrived late. It's dark outside; you can't see anything. And they didn't let me go for a walk. It would have been interesting to climb around here. Well, we'll fix that in time.

But I can look around my room. The director brought me here as soon as my father said goodbye to me and left. And he didn't stay long—he only said at parting that he would call often. He won't. I know when he's lying. Lately, he and my mother have been lying to me a lot.

And in general, when they want to call often, they don't run away like the wind.

My new room was quite small—much smaller than the one I lived in at home. How did they manage to fit all this in there? A bed, a table, bookshelves, a wardrobe, even two nightstands. Oh! I have a huge wooden window here! Cool—just like in a castle, with two opening sashes!

"What a piece of shit!" Eldric Varnwythe told me in a lazy voice as I was putting my things away in the closet.

Eldric Varnwythe…

I guess I should say a few words about this guy.

He appeared in my life completely unexpectedly, like a bolt from the blue. It happened two years ago, right on my birthday.

I remember it as if it were yesterday. I was opening another gift that my grandfather had sent me, and at that moment something hit me on the head—so hard that I lost consciousness and woke up only a day later.

What a commotion, I tell you! They didn't let me out of bed for three days, and everyone was asking how I was feeling. During that time, I saw a whole bunch of doctors. I've never seen so many of them before—just like in a hospital! And this is despite the fact that I can't stand them! They always smell of some stinking ointments and injections!

True, this time no one gave me any injections. And nothing hurt. I can't understand why they set up a hospital in my room?

I felt good—maybe even better than before I got hit. Well, and besides… My new friend, Eldric Varnwythe, had taken up residence inside me.

Although we didn't become friends right away. At first, he was constantly pestering me with his whining! He was always complaining that someone had betrayed him and now he had to drag out a miserable existence in my body.

But over time, he calmed down. And after a few more weeks, he even started talking to me.

Oh, and we studied each other for a long time. He has a nasty character! Worse than my grandfather on my mother's side, and he is a real whiner. Everything is always wrong for him—either they said something wrong, or they looked at him the wrong way, or there was a draught. So Eldric turned out to be no gift.

He kept telling me that in his native world he was some important nobleman—almost a prince in our terms. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you—he was transferred to me from another world. Something went wrong there.

Only he won't admit what exactly. He only talks about some bastards who must pay for their betrayal. But that's okay; that's his business.

And Eldric was also the main dark magician in his world. Well, if he's not lying, of course. In general, he sometimes tells me such things that I think he often lies, the poor liar. He takes advantage of the fact that I can't check him, so he makes up all sorts of fairy tales.

Although… Eldric did teach me some things, so let's assume that he is a real dark mage, even if he's not the most important one. And he's also an excellent swordsman; I know that now too.

So, personally, my life has changed a lot since we met. Now I can do a lot of interesting things. Eldric taught me some amazing things. Although he is gloomy, he likes to joke.

And in general, he turned out to be a very good friend. I haven't had anyone like him yet. He may have his own problems in his head, but he's always there for me. Well, we all have our oddities; what can we do?

Take even my parents—they are odd. You can't please them. When I was fooling around and doing poorly at school, they didn't like it. When I met Eldric and started reading more books, they didn't like it either—quite the opposite. It only got worse.

Eh… Only one grandfather on my father's side understood me; he kept slipping me all sorts of books until my father forbade me to go to him. How is this even normal?

I'm telling you—my parents are weird. And the further we go, the weirder they become. So it would be good for us to live separately from each other. For me, that's for sure.

"They brought you to some hole, I said," Eldric reminded himself again. "Are you deaf, Miles?"

"This is not a hole, but Pendragon Academy," I answered him mentally. "Didn't you see the sign?"

"Pff… What a school of magic… Once upon a time, I was sent to study in the same school. I was still very young then. That was a real school, not this…"

"How do you know what it is? I haven't even unpacked my things yet."

"It's obvious. Just look at this room—what a kennel! They don't show any respect to their students; what else can we talk about? When I went to study, they gave me a separate floor with about forty rooms, got it?"

"Yeah, so I believed you. Now tell me—one hundred and forty rooms," I smiled, thinking about which of the shelves in the closet to adapt for jeans. "I like everything. There is even a big window and a bathroom, and I didn't have my own bathroom at home."

"How terrible… To be happy about such banal things… Am I really going to conquer the world with this man?"

"Your whining is making my teeth hurt," I said, then closed the empty suitcase and stuffed it under the bed.
