Chapter 3: Chapter 3
Since she had to take care of Kal, Kara had to accept the kindness of Jonathan and Martha Kent. She carried Kal, who was still crying, and followed them to their house.
The farmhouse was nothing special, just a regular two-story building next to the farm, near the road.
In the yard, you could see various farming tools, as well as a truck that Jonathan used to transport goods or other equipment.
When they reached the living room on the first floor, Jonathan and his wife invited Kara and Kal to sit down, while Martha turned and went into a room inside. After a while, she came out with a small basin.
Kara inhaled, smelling a milky aroma.
Even Kal seemed to smell it, and the crying finally stopped. He couldn't wait to wriggle in Kara's arms, clearly anxious and hungry.
Kara smiled and held him tighter, afraid he might fall to the floor. After all, she was only ten years old and still just a child.
"Let me handle it," Martha suddenly said, reaching out to Kara to try and take Kal.
Kara held Kal tight and avoided her, looking cautiously at Martha.
Martha tried her best to show a friendly expression and explained, "I think you must be hungry too, right? Jonathan, there's still some bread in the back, give some to this girl... Your name is Kara, right? Bring her a bowl of milk too."
Upon hearing his wife's request, Jonathan hurriedly got up and went to the kitchen in the back.
Kara swallowed unconsciously. Martha was right, she was indeed hungry, and more importantly, thirsty.
Because she had been too nervous while escaping Krypton, there was no food or drink prepared in the spaceship, and she had suffered from hunger and thirst during the journey.
So when Jonathan came back holding a plate with slices of bread in one hand, with a couple of freshly cut bacon strips and two more slices of bacon on the side, and a container of milk in the other hand, Kara's eyes lit up.
Martha approached Kara again, but this time Kara didn't avoid her. She let Jonathan use the food in his hand to replace her younger brother in her arms.
If a giant panda saw this, it would surely call him an expert.
Bears will never be slaves, except for food and shelter.
After Kara took the food, she couldn't wait to eat the slice of bread, the egg and bacon sandwich, and took a big bite. She swallowed it after only a couple of chews and then took a large gulp of milk.
She hadn't realized how hungry she was until she tasted the food.
Not to mention Kal, Martha was worried about how to feed him without a bottle.
Unexpectedly, Kal instinctively reached out to grab the container holding the milk, opened his mouth, and began drinking eagerly.
Martha was concerned about the milk spilling, so she held him tightly, worried that Kal might choke. She wanted to pat his back but only had two hands.
In the end, Jonathan quietly approached Martha and gently patted Kal's back with his large, rough hands, showing a kind and gentle expression in his eyes.
The siblings who had fled here had met kind people and finally had enough to fill their stomachs.
"You can stay here if you want," Jonathan suddenly said.
Kara paused, setting the plates and bowls in her hands down, and looked at Jonathan, then at Martha, who was holding Kal and clearly reluctant to let go. She realized something in her heart.
In fact, if she hadn't "interfered," this family would have probably adopted Kal. They were meant to be Kal's adoptive parents.
Kara didn't resist. The siblings were new here, and they didn't even know where they would sleep, let alone find food and water.
If it was up to Kara, things didn't look so good. Not only was her body just ten years old, but finding work was difficult, and the bigger issue was that she didn't even have an identity. So it wasn't an exaggeration to say she was in trouble.
And what if they encountered bad people?
Not that Kara was boasting, but with her blonde hair and beautiful facial features already beginning to show signs of future beauty, she would not only grow into a rare and stunning beauty, but she already was one.
She didn't know how she was going to survive, let alone take care of her little brother.
To be honest, Kara was very touched, but could she really trust them?
As if sensing Kara's complex feelings, both of gratitude and concern, Jonathan continued to reassure her: "We won't ask about your origins, even if you really are aliens. We won't reveal it, and we'll help you hide it. As for your... thing (referring to the spaceship), we'll also help you hide it in the attic of the barn so it won't be discovered. You can take it out when you grow up and need it.
How does that sound?"
Martha hugged Kal even tighter, clearly very fond of the child, and she also lifted her head to say to Kara: "And you're still a child yourself. How will you take care of such a small baby (referring to Kal)? Stay here. We have cows on the farm; he can drink milk every day and grow strong here.
And for you, we can arrange an identity, and even allow you to go to school."
Kara felt more and more tempted. Not only were they offering shelter but also food and drink, and they would solve her identity issue.
But Kara remained skeptical: "Aren't you afraid we might be bad people?"
Jonathan and Martha exchanged glances, thinking, "What kind of villain could be so small?"
"Are you?" they asked Kara instead of expressing their humorous thoughts.
Kara shook her head: "Actually, we're refugees. Our home planet was destroyed, and everyone died. We're some of the last survivors. We escaped because Earth's environment is suitable for us."
Kara took the initiative to explain her and Kal's origins, assuring Jonathan and Martha that they weren't bad people and had no ulterior motives.
After hearing this, Martha hugged Kal even more tightly, and Jonathan stepped forward sympathetically and compassionately, gently patting Kara on the shoulder.
Kara shook her head. Because she had absorbed the original memories of this body, she also felt a wave of sadness.
"To be honest," Kara said, lifting her head and looking at Jonathan and Martha, "if you're really willing to take us in, we'd be very grateful because we really don't know what to do. We'll repay you in the future."
"What reward are you talking about?" Martha said emotionally. "Jonathan and I don't have children of our own. If you're willing to stay, that's the best reward. We finally have our own kids, Jonathan."
Jonathan looked at Martha with a wry smile, not wanting to scare the girl, but he, too, was a little emotional.
Kara felt helpless inside, but since she needed others to take care of her, adoption seemed to be the best option.
So, from that day on, Kara and Kal-El received their new names on Earth.
Kal now became known as Clark Kent.
And Kara kept her first name, but her last name changed to Kent, making her Kara Kent.
