Chapter 55: Chapter 55

[1st POV]

In the morning, Pamela found a message in the mailbox.

It was from Bruce Wayne.

It was an invitation to a small official event related to the company.

Since Pamela worked for him, the invitation ended up with her. However, it wasn't just Pamela's invitation.

There were two separate invitations, one for me and one for her.

Nevertheless, it's best to prepare for anything that could happen.

Of course, I doubt they planned an ambush at their place, but perhaps some paranoia has developed in my subconscious.

So, I made thorough preparations for this Saturday.

I was dressed in formal attire, but I also created five clones and positioned them around the mansion, including at one of the entrances to the Batcave that I accidentally found.

As for the arsenal, I won't even mention it.

Pamela knew about this incident when I beat up the bat family. She had a good laugh for a long time.

Afterward, she told me she knew Batman's true identity.

She just hadn't told me before due to an agreement with him on certain matters.

After negotiating the future cooperation together, they had some heart-to-heart conversations.

I didn't find out exactly what they were discussing. For now, I focus on my own senses and monitor my surroundings.

The total number of people at the event was quite small, just sixty, including ten staff members and Alfred.

The rest were divided into two groups, with those related to science and those whose presence I couldn't quite figure out.

As for the Bat-family, that part was clear, but I had no idea what Miss Kane, Miss Mikaelson, and Commissioner Gordon were doing here.

After ten minutes, Bruce "greeted" everyone with a few opening words and then excused himself to attend to the other guests.

After that, I succumbed to boredom while hearing Pamela and her coworkers discuss recent discoveries in the Amazon River Valley.

I smiled, pretended to be interested, and did not show how bored I was.

After a while, I excused myself and went outside to look at the stars and get some fresh air.

There, I ran into Gordon, who was smoking.

"Good evening, sir. It's nice to meet at least one familiar face here, someone I can talk to 'normally.'"

I said.

"Likewise."

Commissioner Gordon nodded, slightly smiling, but it seemed a bit forced, "I've been lucky with my daughter. She's in her second year of law school and first year of history, and she's already made a name for herself with conferences and articles. She's also already been noticed by Wayne Industries. She could have been some technician who would bugging me about some nonsense."

"Both at once?"

I didn't know about the history.

"Yeah. She wants to be a lawyer for different reasons, but she loved history since childhood. That's why she also enrolled in history, just for herself. I'm surprised she has so much energy."

"Hmm. Interesting. At her age, I wasn't thinking about studies..."

"I doubt she's always thinking about school."

Gordon told me as he refilled his pipe, "Otherwise, she wouldn't be out until midnight sometimes. And now, she wants to move out of our house too."

"Our?"

I asked in surprise.

Gordon didn't seem like someone who would have split personalities.

"With my wife."

"I didn't know you were married. I've never seen you together."

I remarked, causing Gordon to cough in anger.

"No. If you didn't know, I'm married to Sarah Essen-Gordon. By the way, she's your direct superior, as she officially controls your department. But she's been on assignment in Washington for the past six months. You may not have known, but the others should have told you about her."

He said, smirking through his thick mustache.

"Wow, I didn't know. I'm sorry."

"It happens."

Gordon continued, "She went on a conference for three weeks, then the conference was extended for a whole month, and then they shoved some 'professional development' courses at her, and so on. Anyway, that's all done, and she'll be back in Gotham soon. So, congratulations, you'll soon meet my wife. My daughter takes after her in terms of personality..."

I didn't listen further, and I just imagined the monster that would soon be arriving in my head.

After about five minutes of conversation with my boss, he had to stop due to a phone call.

However, a few well-known women came over almost instantly.

"Hello, Detective Dinklage!"

Hannah greeted me cheerfully.

"Good evening."

Katherine Kane nodded at me.

"We didn't just come to you for no reason."

Hannah said, grinning, "Someone here has been gathering their strength and courage for quite a while and wants to tell you something!"

She shoved Kane forward, who looked completely unaware of the trick being played on her.

"Um, well, yes, I acted inappropriately when we first met, and it was due to alcohol and stress."

Kate admitted.

I had to hold back a smile.

Now, I truly believe she must somehow relate to Bruce. It had taken them both a month to accept their guilt... Why are they so stubborn?

"No need, Miss Kane, I understand. You were on edge back then. So I'm not offended. If I didn't hold a grudge against Joker and other villains, I can't hold one against you."

I replied with a calm tone.

"Well, there you go, and you were worrying,"

Hannah tried to add something, but Kate silenced her with a hand over her mouth.

"I appreciate your understanding and those words."

Kate said.

"What exactly?"

I asked.

"About: '...if you don't want to find yourself in such situations, ma'am, I think you should either be more cautious in places like this late at night or become more independent and strong so you don't need help!' I believe that's what you said."

"You can just call me Isaac. And yes, I said that. I hope it has a positive effect on you."

"Believe me."

She smiled, the first genuine smile I'd seen from her that evening.

"Anyway, I think we'll meet again. Now, I need to take care of Hannah—she always gets drunk at the wrong moments."

"Of course, all the best."

She said, leading Hannah to the car.

I have a feeling someone's going to get an earful about not putting friends in jeopardy.

Well, it's good that she got her head on straight.

I hope she'll end up on our side someday.

Otherwise, it'll be a mess—I wanted to make her "one of us," but ended up making her "one of them."

"Detective Dinklage?"

Alfred Pennyworth addressed me, judging by my expression.

"Yes, it's me. And I take it you are the butler of the Wayne family? Alfred Pennyworth?"

"You are not mistaken. Master Bruce would like to speak with you alone in his office. I hope you won't refuse?"

"Of course not, I wouldn't want to disappoint the host of this little gathering."

"Then please, follow me..."

Well, it looks like I'm popular today.

Just as I finish one conversation, someone else shows up. I hope I don't officially end up on the "enemy" list today.

Otherwise, I think I'll have to create a secret persona and eliminate the threat so they won't get in my way in the future.

However, that's a highly undesirable scenario but time will tell what's what.

To be continued...
