Chapter 12: Chapter twenty three and Twenty four

Chapter 23: The Game Begins

(Joshua's POV – Watching the Detective in Action)

---

The Fun Begins

Joshua couldn't help but chuckle as he walked away from Barbara Gordon.

She was sharp. Really sharp.

She had already put together that something was off about him. No records, no past, and suddenly getting adopted by Bruce Wayne? Yeah, that would make anyone suspicious.

But Joshua wasn't worried.

Because this? This was fun.

Barbara didn't know it yet, but he already knew who she was going to become.

Batgirl.

One of Gotham's future heroes.

And now she was playing detective, trying to dig into his past.

Joshua grinned to himself. This was going to be entertaining.

---

A Cat and Mouse Game

For the next few days, Joshua made it just easy enough for Barbara to keep chasing him.

He left little clues. Just enough to make her think she was onto something—before pulling the rug out from under her.

Barbara would "accidentally" overhear him talking about things he shouldn't know.

She'd catch glimpses of him moving too fast in gym class or lifting way more than any normal teenager should.

Once, he made sure she saw him dodge a basketball without looking—his instincts far beyond what a normal human should have.

He wanted her to dig deeper.

Because the more she searched, the more frustrated she would get.

And the more frustrated she got?

The funnier it was for him.

---

Barbara's Growing Obsession

Barbara wasn't backing down.

He could see it in the way she watched him now—more intense, more determined.

She started showing up in places he didn't expect. Lunchroom, hallways, even outside the school.

She wasn't stalking him exactly… but she was definitely trying to put the pieces together.

Joshua made sure to give her just enough to keep her hooked.

One day, as he walked past her locker, he casually muttered, "Gotham's future Batgirl is slacking."

Barbara spun around. "What did you just say?"

Joshua smirked. "Nothing."

Barbara narrowed her eyes. "You're messing with me."

Joshua gave a dramatic sigh. "Red, if I was messing with you, you'd know it."

She glared at him as he walked away, her frustration obvious.

Joshua was loving this.

---

The Moment of Truth?

A week later, Barbara finally cornered him again.

This time, she looked confident.

Joshua leaned against a locker, grinning. "You look like you've got something to say."

Barbara crossed her arms. "I know who you are."

Joshua raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Do tell."

Barbara smirked. "You're not some random kid Bruce Wayne took in. You're something else. You're hiding something big."

Joshua laughed. "That's not exactly an answer, Red."

Barbara stepped closer. "You're not normal. I've seen how you move, how you react. You're trained. And not just trained—something else. Something beyond human."

Joshua clapped sarcastically. "Nice observations. But what's the conclusion?"

Barbara's eyes locked onto his. "I don't know yet. But I will."

Joshua grinned. "I look forward to it."

As she walked away, Joshua chuckled to himself.

She had no idea what she was getting into.

And that was what made it so much fun.

Chapter 24: The Masked Romeo

(Joshua's POV – A Duel of Wits and Fists)

---

Fighting in the Streets, Playing in the Halls

Gotham's underworld never slept.

Neither did Joshua.

By night, he was out in the streets, cracking skulls and emptying pockets of criminals who didn't deserve a dime.

By day, he was in school, playing a different kind of game—one where his opponent was none other than Barbara Gordon.

And both were proving to be just as entertaining.

---

Another Night, Another Beatdown

The air in Gotham smelled of rotting trash, smoke, and bad decisions.

Joshua landed in the middle of an alley, his V-mon form glowing faintly under the dim streetlights.

Three thugs were counting a stash of stolen cash, laughing to themselves.

They didn't hear him land.

They didn't see him coming.

But they felt it.

Joshua's foot smashed into the first guy's ribs like a battering ram, sending him flying into a dumpster.

Before the second guy could react, Joshua grabbed him by the wrist, yanking him into a brutal headbutt. The sickening crack of bone filled the alley.

The third one? He actually managed to pull a gun.

Joshua let him.

He stood there, arms crossed, watching as the guy's hands trembled.

"I'd shoot if I were you," Joshua said with a smirk. "You won't get another chance."

The thug's finger twitched—

Too slow.

Joshua dashed forward and slammed his knee into the guy's stomach. The gun clattered to the pavement.

As the thug gasped for air, Joshua leaned in, whispering in his ear.

"Tell your friends."

"Tell every scumbag in Gotham."

"I'm just getting started."

The thug barely nodded before collapsing.

Joshua took the cash and walked away, already thinking about his next fight.

But for now, there was something even more fun waiting for him at school.

---

The Morning After – Playing with Fire

Barbara Gordon was getting bolder.

Joshua could feel her gaze on him all morning. Watching, analyzing, waiting.

She was getting closer.

So he decided to make things even harder for her.

As he walked past her in the hallway, he suddenly spun around dramatically and grabbed his chest.

"Oh, my sweet Juliet!" he cried out, loud enough for half the school to hear.

Barbara froze.

Joshua stepped closer, smirking. "When are you going to find my true heart?"

Barbara's face turned red. Very red.

Students started whispering, giggling, watching.

Barbara glared daggers at him. "You're an idiot."

Joshua grinned. "And yet, here you are, still thinking about me."

She huffed and stormed off.

Joshua leaned against a locker, arms crossed, watching her go.

This was way too fun.

---

Barbara's Counterattack

At lunch, she struck back.

Joshua was just sitting down with his tray when Barbara plopped into the seat across from him.

Her eyes were sharp, full of mischief and challenge.

"So, Romeo," she said sweetly. "Where exactly did you come from again?"

Joshua took a bite of his sandwich, chewing slowly.

"The stars," he said finally. "Fell down one day and decided Gotham looked fun."

Barbara rolled her eyes. "Try again."

Joshua smirked. "Why, are you jealous? Wishing you were my tragic love story?"

Barbara leaned forward, smiling in a way that told him she wasn't backing down.

"I just think it's funny," she said. "How someone with no past just magically becomes Bruce Wayne's new kid."

Joshua's grin widened. "You should be a detective."

Barbara tilted her head. "Maybe I will be."

Joshua chuckled. Oh, she had no idea.

---

The Game Continues

For the rest of the day, Joshua toyed with her.

Little comments, hints, just enough to keep her guessing.

At one point, he "accidentally" let her see him jump a little too high during gym class.

At another, he let her overhear him mutter something about Gotham's future heroes.

Barbara was frustrated.

And Joshua?

Joshua was having the time of his life.

As the final bell rang, he gave her a wink. "Until tomorrow, my Juliet."

Barbara groaned. "I hate you."

Joshua just laughed as he walked away.

This game was far from over.

And he couldn't wait to see what she did next.
