Demon Slayer: Crimson Path

Chapter 3: Useful allies

But as they approached the village, their conversation was cut short by the sound of rustling leaves and snapping twigs. A shadow darted through the underbrush, and Shinta's eyes narrowed. He had been too lost in thought, too complacent. A demon had snuck up on them, drawn by the scent of their blood and the power they exuded.

[Quest Received: Kill demons with Hana]

Without warning, the creature sprang from the shadows, its claws aiming for Shinta's unguarded flank. But before it could land a blow, a burst of pink light filled the air. Hana had sensed the danger, her instincts honed from years of fighting alongside him. She whipped around, her blade moving almost independently of her body.

Her Blooming Petal Breathing First Form: Gentle Bloom Cut, sliced through the demon's midsection, the energy of the attack causing it to dissipate into a shower of black embers. Shinta blinked in surprise, his heart racing. He hadn't even seen it coming.

"Thanks," he murmured, turning to face Hana. Her cheeks were flushed with the thrill of the fight, but her eyes held a steely resolve that was anything but gentle.

"Don't mention it," she said, her voice steady. "But maybe you should pay more attention to your surroundings."

Shinta couldn't argue with that. He had underestimated the demon's cunning, and it had almost cost him. Hana had proven once again that she wasn't just a liability, but an asset.

"We should report to the village elder," he said, pushing aside his pride. "Let them know the area is safe."

Hana nodded, her smile a little less bright but her eyes gleaming with the thrill of victory. They made their way through the forest, the tension of battle slowly dissipating with each step. Shinta noticed that she walked with more confidence now, her posture less rigid, as if their shared victory had bolstered her belief in herself.

The sun had just begun to peek over the horizon by the time they reached the outskirts of the village. The once-desolate streets were now bustling with early-morning activity. The villagers had begun to rebuild their lives, the horrors of the night before already fading into the shadows of memory.

They were met by the village elder, a frail but wise-looking man with a white beard that danced in the early breeze. His eyes widened with relief upon seeing them, especially the young boy they had saved, now clutching onto Hana's hand.

"Thank the heavens," he murmured, his voice trembling with emotion. "You have truly saved us."

Shinta and Hana exchanged a look, a silent acknowledgment of their shared success. They had worked together, each compensating for the other's weaknesses. It was a partnership that had been tested and proven in the heat of battle.

"Hana," Shinta began, his voice gruff as always, but with a hint of something new. "You may be useful to me after all."

Her eyes lit up like stars in a moonlit sky. "Really, Shinta?!" she squealed, jumping up and down with excitement. Her breasts bounced with each exuberant leap, and Shinta couldn't help but stare. He had noticed before, of course—how could he not?—but there was something about the way they moved, so free and unbridled, that was oddly mesmerizing.

"Yeah," he said, his voice thick with something other than annoyance for once. "You're not just a pretty face. You've got skill."

Her cheeks flushed a deeper shade of pink, and she beamed at him. "That means so much, Shinta!" she exclaimed. "I've always wanted to be part of a real demon slaying crew!"

Shaking his head slightly, he couldn't help but be amused by her unbridled enthusiasm. Despite her sometimes-flighty demeanor, she had proven herself a formidable ally. He found his eyes drawn to the gentle sway of her chest, the way her breasts bounced with every step she took. It was a distraction, but not an unwelcome one.

"Just remember, Hana," he said, his voice a warning rumble. "Your carefree attitude might serve you well in battle, but it could get you killed. Keep your guard up, even when you think it's safe."

Her smile didn't falter, but her eyes took on a more serious hue. "I know, Shinta," she replied, her voice softer now. "I've seen what happens when you let your guard down."

The village elder stepped forward, placing a trembling hand on Shinta's shoulder. "Your skills are unmatched," he said, his eyes shining with gratitude. "But even the strongest warriors need companions they can trust."

They handed over the demon parts to the villagers, who promised to deliver them to the Demon Slayer Corps for study. As they made their way back to the village, Hana remained unusually quiet, lost in thought. Shinta noticed the change but said nothing, allowing her the space to process the gravity of their mission.

"C'mon system, be consistent why do you keep giving me different stats every time"

The digital assistant chimed in, "Optimizing stats for maximum efficiency is an ongoing process. The system is continuously analyzing your battles, your techniques, and your interactions with other slayers to determine which stats will best serve you on your path."

Shinta grunted, accepting the explanation. He knew that the system was trying to help, but the inconsistency was frustrating. He turned his attention back to Hana, who was staring at him with a peculiar expression.

"Who are you talking to?" she asked, tilting her head to the side.

Shinta's eyes snapped back to hers, and he blinked. "Talking to?" he echoed, feigning confusion. "I was just thinking out loud about our next move."

Hana's gaze searched his face for a moment, as if trying to discern the truth. Then, she shrugged it off with a laugh. "Must have been some intense thinking," she said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "You had a weird look on your face."

Shinta offered a half-smile, his mind racing to come up with an excuse for his slip. "Just planning our next mission," he said, hoping to steer the conversation away from his awkward interaction with the system. He had grown more comfortable with the AI over time, but sharing its existence with others was still not something he was willing to do.
