Chapter 23: Chapter 23: We Both... Just Took a Tumble
Si Shu tilted his head, a sharp glint flashing in his eyes as he watched Michikatsu's hand chop down. He was not the type to stand idly by after being attacked. If you choose to make a move, you must be prepared for the consequences!
Ducking his head, Si Shu charged forward, rushing directly into Michikatsu's embrace. He jammed his forearm into Michikatsu's chest and drove his elbow into the soft part of his abdomen.
A flicker of shock appeared in Michikatsu's eyes; he never expected Si Shu to counter his attack with such a tactic. His hand chop missed its mark, and a sharp pain erupted from his stomach. Reacting instinctively, Michikatsu stumbled back a few steps, bending over to ease the impact.
In that brief moment, Si Shu took another step, hooking his left leg around Michikatsu's ankles. With a forceful twist, Michikatsu, who was still retreating, felt his feet tangle together. His body tilted to the left, momentarily suspended in the air, unable to find any leverage.
Not good!
Panic seized his heart, and the next thing he saw was a black object growing larger and larger before his eyes.
POW!
Without a shred of hesitation, Si Shu delivered a vicious left hook straight to Michikatsu's face.
"Waaah!"
Driven by immense force, Michikatsu flew backward, crashing out of the house.
Although Si Shu felt the impact connect, a sense of unease lingered in his heart. Michikatsu Tsugikuni was not someone who could be defeated with a single punch.
Sure enough, Michikatsu, who had been sent flying, was covered in dust but otherwise completely unharmed. Si Shu's heavy punch hadn't even left a bruise!
"Your fighting style is novel. It's not something a person like Yoriichi could teach," Michikatsu said, cracking his knuckles and patting the dust off his clothes. A smile of approval touched his lips. "Si Shu, abandon Yoriichi. Become my disciple."
With that, Michikatsu extended his right hand to Si Shu. Though his face and eyes were filled with sincerity, Si Shu rejected him without a second thought.
"Sorry, I refuse." Si Shu clenched his fists, warily observing the other man's reaction.
"Can you tell me why?" Michikatsu's brow furrowed. A surge of anger rose within him, but he pressed on. "You should be well aware of my strength. While I may not be Yoriichi's equal, I am still the second strongest in this so-called Demon Slayer Corps. Besides, Yoriichi is incapable of expressing his emotions. If you wish to make a name for yourself in this warring states era, I am your best choice!"
Spreading his arms wide, Michikatsu, who was usually a picture of stoicism, glared with wide, ferocious eyes, his expression turning somewhat savage. "Si Shu, I will ask you one last time! Choose me, or choose Yoriichi!"
Seeing Si Shu fall into silence, Michikatsu thought he saw a glimmer of hope. If I cannot surpass Yoriichi in swordsmanship, then I will steal away his only student. In that way, I can claim a victory over him, just once.
However, the nod Michikatsu expected never came. The only thing that greeted him was Si Shu's cold, unwavering gaze.
"A teacher for a day is a father for life," Si Shu stated firmly. "He raised me. He is, and always will be, my only master!"
With that, Si Shu charged forward again, ready to clash with Michikatsu once more.
"Stubborn fool!" Michikatsu snorted coldly and moved as well. The deep red marks on his left forehead and right neck began to glow faintly, as if they were alive. A vicious light flashed in his eyes as he threw a straight right punch at Si Shu.
A deafening roar echoed as Michikatsu's fist seemed to tear the very air apart.
Damn it, I forgot! Michikatsu has a permanent Mark!
It was only when he saw that punch that Si Shu realized what he had overlooked. The Mark!
As an ability that borrowed power from heaven itself, activating the Mark drastically enhanced one's physical abilities. The stronger the swordsman, the more likely they were to awaken a Mark under the influence of another user. And Michikatsu had awakened his long ago, under Yoriichi's influence. Even without a Nichirin Blade to use a Breathing Style, he was a human-shaped tyrannosaurus!
With no time for a proper defense, Si Shu crossed his arms in front of him.
CRACK!
Michikatsu's fist slammed into Si Shu's arms with devastating force, sending him flying. The faint sound of shattering bone was followed by waves of excruciating pain. Si Shu knew his bones were broken. Just a moment ago, he had sent Michikatsu crashing out of the house; now, in the blink of an eye, he had been sent crashing into it.
His body flew backward, smashing through two walls before finally embedding itself in a third.
"Cough, cough... So, this is what it feels like to be punched through a wall." Spitting out the blood that had pooled in his chest, Si Shu wiped his mouth and painfully pulled himself free.
Seeing Si Shu walk out of the ruined house, Michikatsu looked slightly surprised. "You're not dead?" He knew better than anyone the power behind that last punch. He had thrown it with the genuine intent to kill. If I cannot have him, then I will destroy him completely!
"Yeah, not dead. Are you disappointed?" Si Shu said, shaking his dizzy head and clenching his fists again. "Sorry to keep you waiting. Shall we continue?"
Looking at the unyielding boy before him, Michikatsu couldn't help but admire Yoriichi for finding such a fine disciple. But the more he esteemed Si Shu, the more he wanted him. And the more he wanted him, the more he desired to eliminate him.
"Si Shu, you are an excellent disciple." The knuckles of Michikatsu's clenched right fist cracked as he seemed to gather his power. Bulging muscles and veins strained against his clothes, creating deep furrows.
"In your next life, remember to choose a better master!"
Having gathered his strength, Michikatsu roared.
"No," Si Shu said suddenly, his body relaxing as he sensed something. "This life isn't over yet."
Just as Michikatsu was looking on in confusion, several voices shouted from outside the courtyard.
"What's happening?!"
"Our two guests, please, what happened in there?!"
With the sound of a heavy impact, the courtyard gate was smashed open. Chief Tiehe led a dozen swordsmiths who swarmed in, brandishing various weapons. Seeing Si Shu and Michikatsu in the ruined courtyard, Tiehe asked urgently, "What happened to you two? Did a demon invade?!"
As a lifelong swordsmith, the only threat Tiehe could imagine was a demon.
"No, there was no demon invasion," Si Shu said with a smile, patting the dust off himself.
"We both... just took a tumble."
