Chapter 40: Chapter 40: An Unexpected Ending, The Corps in Shock
[Detected that the Host has awakened the Mark through his own efforts. Distributing special reward.]
[Congratulations to the Host for acquiring the special constitution: Marechi.]
[Marechi: A demon's favorite. Eating a high-grade Marechi can be equivalent to the nutrition of fifty, or even a hundred people. Additionally, Marechi blood can increase the Host's physical abilities.]
[Current Level: Low-Grade Marechi.]
[Effect: Adds the physical strength of five ordinary adult men to the Host's base abilities.]
As Si Shu was marveling at the special effects of his new blood type, the system's voice sounded again.
[The Host's current Mark is a Temporary Mark. It will disappear after a certain period of time.]
[Current Effect: Doubles the Host's physical abilities.]
Taking a long breath, Si Shu understood what a Temporary Mark meant. Unlike the Tsugikuni brothers' permanent Marks, his was more like the ones the Hashira would awaken centuries later. It would appear during battle but be gone during normal times. Regardless, the Mark's appearance gave Si Shu a massive boost. Combined with the enhancement from his Marechi blood, his strength was on a completely different level.
Feeling the power coursing through his body, Si Shu gripped his Nichirin Blade and pointed its tip at Kokushibo. "Shall we... continue?"
At that moment, Kokushibo had finished regenerating his injuries. Seeing this, Si Shu sighed internally. Unless you hit a demon's vital point, killing them is incredibly difficult. But from a demon's perspective, a human's body is full of weaknesses.
Creating another bone sword, Kokushibo seemed unwilling to give up. "This is a demon's healing ability. It is a power that humans can never hope to match. Si Shu, join m—"
Before he could finish, a Nichirin Blade was already at his neck. Greatly alarmed, Kokushibo leaped back, dodging the slash. Seeing his attack miss, a flash of disappointment appeared in Si Shu's eyes. It seems Kokushibo really isn't that easy to kill.
"Fourth Form: Fake Rainbow!"
"Fifth Form: Fire Wheel!"
Stomping on the ground, Si Shu approached Kokushibo amidst the fiery illusions he created. Then, he did a somersault, bringing a powerful vertical slash down on Kokushibo's shoulder.
"Moon Breathing, Third Form: Loathsome Moon - Chains!"
Kokushibo unleashed a series of slashes with his bone sword, creating countless circular moon blades in the air. He then sent out two crescent slashes to meet Si Shu's attack.
BOOM!
The terrifying collision once again caused an explosion, blowing Si Shu and Kokushibo apart. Standing up from the rubble, Si Shu prepared to attack again. Unexpectedly, Kokushibo stood still.
"It's me. What is it?" he said, as if talking to the air, a hint of confusion on his face. "I know. I'm on my way." A look of respect appeared on his face, and he turned to leave. "It seems our battle will have to wait until next time."
"I'll be ready whenever you are," Si Shu replied, sheathing his sword without a trace of fear. He knew Kokushibo had been talking to Muzan. Although he didn't know why Muzan would recall him at this moment, it undoubtedly bought him time.
After Kokushibo left, Si Shu coughed up a large mouthful of blood. Even at his current strength, fighting Kokushibo was still a strain. The Mark on his skin slowly faded, and a feeling of exhaustion washed over him. It felt as if a thousand mountains had been placed on his back. A heavy fatigue flooded his brain, and his eyelids felt weighed down, wanting to close.
The moment before he lost consciousness, he saw a group of people in black clothes. On their backs was a large character: "Kakushi."
Dimly, Si Shu felt many voices around him. Though he couldn't make them out clearly, he remembered a few phrases.
"With such heavy injuries, can he even survive?"
"It's a miracle! His body is healing far faster than a normal person's!"
"It's strange. It's been a week, why hasn't he woken up yet?"
"Did you hear? It seems Mr. Yoriichi's brother has become a demon."
Hearing that last sentence, the groggy Si Shu remembered: he had to report Michikatsu's transformation. He forced his eyes open, seeing only the ceiling above.
"He's awake! He's awake!" The Corps member watching over him jumped from his chair in joy.
"Hiss... it hurts." Just sitting up in bed was enough to make Si Shu suck in a sharp breath. As he was about to get out of bed, Ubuyashiki Nozomi's voice came from outside the door.
"Mr. Si Shu, are you awake?"
"I am. Please come in."
Nozomi and his mother, Amane, entered. Before he could even ask about his condition, Si Shu hurriedly told him about Michikatsu becoming a demon.
"There's no need, Mr. Si Shu. The Demon Slayer Corps already knows," Nozomi said, shaking his head, a troubled look on his face.
From Nozomi, Si Shu learned that this was the tenth day since he had fallen unconscious. Three days ago, the demonized Michikatsu had appeared, eliminated dozens of Demon Slayers, and allowed a single survivor to bring back news of his existence.
Now, the entire Demon Slayer Corps was in a state of panic. Setting aside the fact that Michikatsu, the former second-strongest slayer, had become a demon, his relationship with Yoriichi alone was a source of great tension. If the older brother chose to become a demon, would the younger brother also betray humanity for eternal life? Even if Yoriichi wouldn't, could he truly raise his blade against his own brother?
After hearing Nozomi's words, Si Shu lowered his head, his expression grim. "I believe Master Yoriichi is not that kind of person."
"I believe in Mr. Yoriichi as well, but there are more and more dissenting voices in the Corps now," Nozomi said apologetically, as if懊恼 for not having done a better job of managing morale. "To protect Mr. Yoriichi, I've asked him to go to a bamboo forest to clear his head."
The bamboo forest! The moment he heard those words, Si Shu's expression changed. Others might not know what was about to happen, but he knew very well. He quickly asked for the location of the forest and, disregarding his not-yet-fully-healed body, rushed out the door.
"Mr. Si Shu, your body—" Before Nozomi could stop him, he could only watch him leave.
After rushing out of the room, Si Shu quickly noticed that the way the other slayers looked at him had changed. It was cold, grim, and held a hidden trace of anger and panic. They instinctively moved away from him, seemingly wanting no contact. The official members even placed their hands on their sword hilts the moment they saw him. It seemed the news of Michikatsu's transformation had terrified them all.
Snorting coldly at them, Si Shu didn't want to waste time and rushed out of the headquarters. After several days of travel, he finally approached his destination.
