Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Taunts and Scorn, Leaving the Demon Slayer Corps
"Mr. Yoriichi, I presume you are already aware that your brother, Michikatsu Tsugikuni, has become a demon," the Wind Hashira said.
Yoriichi nodded without any attempt to hide it. He had some inkling as to why his brother became a demon, but no matter the reason, it was no excuse for him to evade responsibility. Seeing Yoriichi admit it so readily, a cold sneer appeared on the Wind Hashira's face. "In that case, then—"
"Please wait!" a female voice interrupted before the Wind Hashira could continue. It was the Flower Hashira, Inoue Mie. It had been a while, and her aura had grown stronger. Even after becoming a Hashira, she clearly hadn't slacked on her training. "Lord Wind Hashira, please do not forget the mission Oyakata-sama gave us." She stood before him without a trace of fear.
"You!" The Wind Hashira was about to retort but was pulled back by the man next to him.
"Mie is right. Our mission is to bring Mr. Yoriichi and Si Shu back," said the man, who was none other than Rengoku Sadatoshi. He now had a few scars on his face, likely from troubles encountered while hunting demons. His features had lost their immaturity and were beginning to resemble those of a proper Demon Slayer.
Pulling the Wind Hashira aside, Sadatoshi suddenly bowed to Si Shu and Yoriichi. "I apologize for my previous actions." Both Si Shu and Yoriichi were smart enough to know he was apologizing for lashing out at them over Tojuro's death.
Yoriichi nodded. "Since the Master wants us back, let's go."
Hearing Yoriichi agree so readily, several of the Demon Slayers felt a sense of relief. Setting aside his terrifying strength, his status as the very origin of all breathing styles was enough to make them hesitant. If they had a choice, none of them wanted to cross swords with Yoriichi. Soon, the group left the bamboo forest.
A few days later, they were in a reception room at the Ubuyashiki estate.
"Please wait a moment," Amane said, leading them in before going to notify Nozomi. However, the moment she left, the Wind Hashira could no longer sit still. He stood up and began to accuse Si Shu and Yoriichi, his words merciless, completely ignoring their contributions to the Corps. From his words, Si Shu could discern many things. The most obvious was that he wanted Yoriichi and him to take responsibility for three things: failing to defeat Muzan, letting the female demon Tamayo go, and the matter of Michikatsu becoming a demon.
"You should be stripped of your status as a Demon Slayer!" the Wind Hashira roared at Yoriichi, his face flushed. The Stone and Sound Hashira also stood by his side, agreeing with his opinion. Sadatoshi's expression was conflicted, but he didn't voice any objections. As for the Water Hashira and Inoue Mie, they didn't dare say a word, turning their heads away.
To have his respected master insulted like this, even Si Shu, with his good temper, couldn't sit still. He was about to stand up and refute the Wind Hashira but was pushed back down by a hand.
"Master..." Yoriichi just shook his head at his student's questioning look. "This time, I have implicated you." With that, he bowed his head slightly to the Wind, Stone, and Sound Hashira. "We are willing to accept all responsibility."
Without another word, Yoriichi silently endured the punishment that should not have been his. Perhaps, from the moment he made defeating Muzan his life's goal, these things no longer seemed important. His only worry was likely for his student.
But even though Yoriichi was willing to accept being stripped of his status, the Wind Hashira and the others were not satisfied. Whenever they saw Yoriichi's placid expression, they felt he had no intention of repenting or admitting his mistake.
"What's the use of just accepting it? You should atone for all the people who have died and will die because of demons! They will all die because you were soft! You should commit seppuku!"
The moment he heard those words, the veins on Si Shu's forehead bulged. If Yoriichi hadn't been holding him down, he would have already drawn his sword and confronted the Wind Hashira. Seeing that neither of them reacted, the Wind Hashira was about to continue his tirade when a voice came from outside.
The door opened, and the current head of the Demon Slayer Corps, Ubuyashiki Nozomi, entered.
"Oyakata-sama." After receiving everyone's bows, Nozomi sat in the main seat, with Amane beside him as his deputy. "I saw and heard everything that just happened."
At these words, the Wind Hashira's face instantly changed. He was about to say something but was stopped by Nozomi. "I know you were just angry and thinking of the Corps' best interests." With that, Nozomi turned his gaze to Si Shu and Yoriichi. "Mr. Yoriichi, Mr. Si Shu, do you have anything to say?"
The two said nothing, merely shaking their heads.
"In that case, as the head of the Demon Slayer Corps, I will announce the verdict for Master Yoriichi and his student, Si Shu." The entire room fell silent. All eyes were on him: the enraged Wind Hashira and his faction, the conflicted Sadatoshi and Inoue Mie, the prepared Yoriichi, and the secretly tense Si Shu, ready to erupt at a moment's notice.
"The order for seppuku is revoked!"
The Wind Hashira was instantly displeased. "Oyakata-sama! This—"
"This is my decision. If my father were here, he would have agreed." At the mention of his father, Nozomi's eyes reddened. No matter what, he was still just a six-year-old child.
"Even if they are spared death, they can no longer hunt demons as Demon Slayers!" the Wind Hashira added, though he accepted Nozomi's decision.
"We will leave now," Yoriichi said, standing up and leading Si Shu towards the door. The moment he opened it, he paused and turned back to look at Ubuyashiki Nozomi.
"Your father would be proud of you now."
With that, the two of them left the estate. Hearing those words, Nozomi, whose eyes were already red, could no longer hold back his emotions. He knelt on the floor and performed a deep, heavy bow in the direction they had left.
"Mr. Yoriichi, Mr. Si Shu... thank you. May your journey be blessed with fortune in battle."
Unfortunately, they could not hear his words. After leaving the estate, they returned to their small house and began to pack their belongings.
