Chapter 108: Gentle but Sluggish and Cowardly Satomi Rentaro
"Enju!" A loud shout.
Aihara Enju looked at Satomi Rentaro. He lowered his head, his hoarse, low voice almost a command: "Let's go."
"But she..." Aihara Enju anxiously tried to speak.
"Let's go!" Satomi Rentaro interrupted her, clenching his fists until veins bulged, and turned away.
"Heh." The enforcer sneered, mocking his cowardice. He pressed the trigger without hesitation.
"Bang!"
Aihara Enju turned her head back in a daze. Blood splattered.
"Tsk! Say something when you shoot; you got it all over me!" The enforcer next to him unhappily used the Cursed Child's clothes to wipe the blood off himself. The enforcer who fired the shot released the Cursed Child. The girl fell to the ground without a breath, letting the blood flow.
But the words from the enforcer's mouth sent chills down one's spine: "I'll definitely remind you next time."
Next time... Anger surged in Aihara Enju's mind, mixed with an indescribable confusion. Her past self had died, right in front of her. Yet her present self couldn't save her past self.
"Enju, let's go." Satomi Rentaro reached out to pull Aihara Enju. Unexpectedly, Aihara Enju dodged his hand. Her gaze at Satomi Rentaro was full of complexity. She suddenly felt Satomi Rentaro was so unfamiliar.
"Enju..." How could Satomi Rentaro not feel the disappointment in her eyes? His heart inexplicably ached. To avoid trouble, to avoid breaking the law, he made such a choice—a choice that utterly disappointed Aihara Enju.
*****
"Heh, how disappointing. I shouldn't have had any expectations for you."
The sudden words attracted attention. Several figures suddenly appeared.
"Tendou-san..." Satomi Rentaro saw Tendou Kisara at a glance.
"..." Tendou Kisara stared at Satomi Rentaro, her eyes also reflecting disappointment.
"How is that Cursed Child with you?" The two enforcers pointed their guns at the unknown newcomers. Their eyes narrowed when they saw the child Ren was holding. They were certain a Cursed Child had just died in their hands! He lowered his head, only to find that the Cursed Child's corpse on the ground dissipated like a phantom.
"What?" Is this an illusion? The corpse disappeared?
Ren had merely controlled their five senses; he had already brought this girl back. What they killed was simply a false image seen by their eyes.
"She..." Aihara Enju, excited yet worried, wanted to ask Ren. She wanted to know the girl's condition.
"Don't worry, she's fine." Ren had already healed all her injuries with Primal Energy, and she was now sleeping peacefully in his arms.
"That's great." Tears welled up in Aihara Enju's eyes.
"Who are you people? I'm arresting you on charges of harboring a criminal, surrender!" The law enforcers, feeling toyed with, aimed their guns at Ren in a fit of rage.
"Ren-kun, can I make a move?" Shinobu Kocho smiled with narrowed eyes, yet she gave off a chilling aura. She had endured these two scumbags for a long time.
"Tsk, I actually wanted to shoot them into sieves too. Since Shinobu suggested it, you do it," Exusiai aimed her gun at the two men's heads.
Ren nodded casually. Even the righteous Reinhardt didn't stop him. He was indeed a righteous knight, but that didn't mean he would shield evil people, especially evil people from the Otherworld.
"What exactly do you want to do?" Satomi Rentaro felt that something was wrong. These people with Tendou Kisara were very strange! No one paid him any attention. Even Tendou Kisara merely frowned at his reaction.
"Ara, I hope you two can keep Muzan company in hell." Shinobu Kocho blew a light breath. Purple smoke instantly enveloped the two men.
"What the hell is this!!!" The two men had barely uttered their terrified questions when they fell straight down. Their bodies turned purple, their eyes rolled back, foaming at the mouth, trembling and twitching. A few seconds later, their bodies stiffened. Dead beyond dead.
Satomi Rentaro assumed a heavy, serious combat stance. "You killed someone! You violated the law, please turn yourselves in immediately." Now, Ren and his companions were murderers and criminals in his eyes.
"Is killing a beast considered killing a person?" Ren asked, amused.
"Beast?" Satomi Rentaro frowned in confusion.
"Isn't it? Didn't you just see how they abused this poor little girl?"
"Scum who derive pleasure from torturing and killing little girls. What else could such things be but beasts?" Ren asked indifferently.
*****
Aihara Enju looked at Ren, her red eyes reflecting his figure. This person... calls us girls... not Cursed Children!
Satomi Rentaro clenched his fists and said righteously, "Even if they violated the law, the law should punish them, not you people taking the law into your own hands!"
Ren scoffed disdainfully, "Don't you think you're being ridiculous?"
"What do you mean?" Satomi Rentaro frowned.
"What did this little girl do wrong? And why was she lynched by these two people?"
"On the way, I saw the news reporting the new decree issued by the Seitenshi. Didn't it say that Cursed Children enjoy the same rights as normal people?"
Satomi Rentaro's breath hitched, speechless. For a moment, he couldn't find a reason to refute. It was a while before he heard himself say hoarsely, "She was a thief."
Ren looked as if he had heard the biggest joke. "Hey, hey, hey, you're not mistaken, are you? Which eye did you use to see her as a thief? You wouldn't just believe whatever those two beasts said, would you?"
"Since you believe in the law, shouldn't a sentence require solid evidence? Do you want to hear what you're saying?"
Ren's words made everyone present realize that Satomi Rentaro's worldview seemed to be problematic.
"I..." Satomi Rentaro tried to argue, but Ren interrupted him. His eyes looked down at Satomi Rentaro, and words that shocked him came from his lips.
"Satomi Rentaro, you are a modified human created by the New Human Creation Project."
"How do you know?" Satomi Rentaro's eyes widened; this was his secret!
"New Human Creation Project?" Tendou Kisara found it incredible. From Satomi Rentaro's reaction, it seemed Ren wasn't lying. She suddenly realized that she had known this person for so long, yet she didn't understand him at all.
"You speak of wanting to protect these little girls, the so-called Cursed Children." Ren didn't answer his question, but continued speaking on his own. "Yes, you are capable."
"As one of the two from the New Human Creation Project, you have great power, power not inferior to theirs."
"But you're slacking off."
"With this power, you could climb to a high position, gain the right to speak, and at least have the opportunity to make an effort to change some of the current situation."
"But you haven't done that."
"You're just hiding yourself, living a leisurely life, shouting beautiful slogans while pursuing a so-called peaceful and laid-back existence."
"I really dislike people like you, who are capable but only talk and don't act."
"If you were just open about wanting to slack off, I probably wouldn't dislike you."
Ren himself was such a person. If he wanted to slack off, he would say so directly. If he wanted something, he would strive for it. He did just that when he first killed the evil spirits—to gain the power to fight the Doomsday Game. From being powerless to killing evil spirits, and then dancing on the edge of a knife again and again, which is how he became who he is now. If he had also just shouted slogans and slacked off at the beginning, he would most likely have been eaten by zombies in the first Doomsday Game because he had no ability. He hated and was even disgusted by such people, especially those like Satomi Rentaro. Immature in character, with empty ideals. Lazy and useless. Beliefs as fragile as paper, a fickle person who constantly becomes lost and wavering.
In addition, Ren added, "Also, you are really hypocritical."
"You say you want to protect these girls, but in your eyes, you treat them as Cursed Children."
He looked at the short red-haired girl in his arms. "Just now I asked you what this girl did wrong, and you actually answered me that she was a thief."
"Putting aside whether she was a thief or not, what kind of person would be tortured to death by lynching just for stealing? Why do you think this is natural?"
Ren sneered, "Hehe, do you think she's a Cursed Child, so she deserves to die for stealing?"
"Satomi Rentaro... Is that true?!" Her voice trembled. Such a thing... Aihara Enju found it hard to believe; she wanted to hear Satomi Rentaro's answer with her own ears.
"No! Enju, it's not like that... I never thought that way!" Satomi Rentaro frantically tried to explain.
"Enough!" Aihara Enju cried out loudly. She didn't want this kind of panic. She wanted to see Satomi Rentaro answer calmly. She felt Satomi Rentaro was so unfamiliar.
"Enju..." Ultimately, everything was pale. The hard truth was before her eyes. Aihara Enju wasn't stupid. He was a powerful modified human. He had the power to change the situation, yet he always spoke empty words in front of her. He didn't use his power to do anything. He kept saying he wanted to protect the Cursed Children, yet he watched them being abused and shot. This was not the Satomi Rentaro she knew.
Not just Aihara Enju. Even Tendou Kisara felt like she was meeting him for the first time. Disappointment... deep disappointment. He was thought to be merely indecisive. Unexpectedly, his true nature was lax and cowardly.
****
The sound of the argument woke the girl in Ren's arms. She opened her eyes, confused. "So warm... Am I in heaven?" Her vision cleared, and she saw a beautiful face.
Ren gently asked, "Are you awake?"
"Um... am I in heaven?"
"No, you're in my arms."
"!!!" The girl suddenly woke up, trying to get down, and kept apologizing with a sobbing voice. "I'm sorry! So sorry! I shouldn't have picked up the bread on the ground! Please spare me! Don't hit me!"
Her panic and fear were astonishing. Satomi Rentaro's mouth hung open, the words he intended to explain stuck in his throat, like a fishbone lodged there. That girl... really didn't steal...
The girl's words were heartbreaking. Shinobu Kocho seemed to see Kanao from the past, and the anger in her heart flared up again. "Oh, it was too easy to kill them just now... they got off lightly."
"Truly infuriating people."
Reinhardt held the sword in his hand; even someone as gentle as him had moments of anger.
Ren embraced the girl with his broad arm, gently stroked her red hair, and softly said, "Don't worry, everything's over. You did nothing wrong, and no one will pursue you anymore."
"Re... really?" The girl still asked very cautiously. She was afraid of being deceived. Her good friend had been beaten to death after being deceived by words.
Ren: "It's true. What's your name?"
"I... my name is Hong Hong," Hong Hong said timidly.
"Hong Hong, that's a lovely name. Do you want to follow me?"
"Eh!" Hong Hong looked shocked. "But... but I'm a Cursed Child..." How could anyone in the world like a Cursed Child?
"A Cursed Child? In my eyes, you're just a cute little girl." Ren held her with his left hand and rubbed her hair with his right. "From now on, Hong Hong will be my sister. My name is Ren."
"I want to be an older sister!" Exusiai ran over, grinning, "You can call me Big Sister Exusiai."
"..." Hong Hong felt like she was dreaming. Would anyone really take in a Cursed Child? But even if it was a dream, she wanted to keep dreaming it.
"Ren-kun... Big Brother, Big Sister Exusiai..." Hong Hong's eyes were red, as if tears could fall at any moment. She was also prepared for it to be just a dream.
"Wow! What a well-behaved child," Exusiai touched her small face.
"Indeed, she's very much like Kanao," Shinobu Kocho smiled gently.
"Let's go, let's get Hong Hong some new clothes. These are torn."
"Uh... this... these are fine."
"No, that won't do. I make the decisions. How can my sister wear clothes like this? She must have the best."
With that said, Ren carried Hong Hong and left. Exusiai and the others also went along. As Tendou Kisara passed the stunned Satomi Rentaro, she glanced at him with disappointment, then quickly followed.
