Chapter 20: Caught
"Flower thief?" Xun'er blinked her big, watery eyes, showing a puzzled expression.
At the same time, faint footsteps could be heard from a distance outside the door.
With the enhanced senses from inheriting part of Uchiha Itachi's abilities, Zuzong was sensitive to sounds as well. The footsteps were very light—it was a child.
Zuzong thought to himself, "Could it be Xiao Yan?"
In the original work of Battle Through the Heavens, it was mentioned that Xiao Yan had "nurtured" Xun'er's meridians for three years when she was young. Xun'er seemed to be only four or five years old now—could it be tonight?
Thinking of this, Zuzong decided to go for it, come what may. He was going to take a gamble.
He whispered to Xun'er, "Shh, I'm here to catch a flower thief. Recently, there's been a thief in the Xiao family who sneaks into girls' rooms at night, specifically targeting little girls like you."
Xun'er sneered inwardly. Did he really think she was easy to fool just because she was young? Just as she was about to call Ling Ying to capture this boy spouting nonsense, Ling Ying, hiding in the shadows, sent a message, "Miss, this boy isn't lying. There is a thief sneaking around."
With Ling Ying's confirmation, Xun'er reluctantly believed Zuzong a little. She also wanted to see what this guy was up to tonight.
"Cre-eak."
The door was gently pushed open, and a four or five-year-old boy sneaked in.
The boy looked around. Seeing no one else in the room, his gaze fixed on the bed.
On the bed, Xun'er lay down pretending to sleep as Zuzong had instructed. Zuzong himself was hiding behind the door. If the boy quietly approached Xun'er's bed, then he must be the flower thief.
The boy saw the girl lying on the bed, hearing her soft and even breathing. After confirming she was asleep, he carefully approached the bed step by step.
In the moonlight, Xun'er's cute little face was fully revealed in front of the boy. Unable to resist any longer, he reached out to touch Xun'er.
How could Zuzong bear to let Xun'er be sullied by the boy? He immediately leaped behind the boy, raised his right hand, and performed a hand chop.
The boy noticed something was wrong behind him but had no time to turn around before feeling a pain in his neck and losing consciousness, collapsing to the ground.
"See, I was right! There really was a flower thief!" Zuzong said, pointing at the boy lying on the ground, giving him a kick for good measure.
Seeing the boy fall, Xun'er got up and lit a candle in the room.
"This is Xiao Yan?" Xun'er exclaimed in shock.
Instantly, she recalled how nice he had been to her during the day, realizing it was all for a hidden motive. Thinking of this, Xun'er's expression grew colder. Any previous fondness she had for Xiao Yan during the day vanished entirely.
Observing Xun'er, Zuzong nodded secretly when he heard her call out "Xiao Yan." It seemed Xiao Yan had been caught before he could commit his crime! In his mind, he thought, "Xiao Yan, Xiao Yan, since this is the case, I must follow the third essential rule of transmigration in Battle Through the Heavens!":
The three essentials of transmigration in Battle Through the Heavens: Show off, flirt with girls, and take down Xiao Yan.
There were less than twenty minutes until the system would return him to the Douluo Continent, so Zuzong needed to stall for time. He pretended to be furious, though he was secretly delighted, "So you know each other! In that case, how should we deal with this flower thief?"
Xun'er shook her head. She needed to stay in the Xiao family to find the ancient jade, so Xiao Yan couldn't die. "He is Uncle Xiao Zhan's son, just teach him a lesson. No need to kill him."
"Got it!" This was exactly what Zuzong had been waiting for. Now, he could do what he'd always wanted to do for years.
As soon as he finished speaking, Zuzong grabbed the unconscious Xiao Yan with one hand, ran outside the courtyard, climbed over the wall, and found an old crooked tree.
Taking out a kunai, Zuzong used the Uchiha-style "Cow-splitting Technique."
Swish, swish.
Within a few breaths, Xiao Yan was stripped like a white sheep.
Hanging the naked Xiao Yan on the tree, he then flamboyantly wrote several big characters on his body: "If there is a next time, you will be castrated."
This was a punishment method Zuzong had thought of in his past life on Earth. He believed Xiao Yan would never forget this experience and would no longer dare to sneak in at night.
"Xiao Yan, oh Xiao Yan! If you don't go to hell, who will?"
Thinking again, Zuzong still felt dissatisfied. He went ahead and tied Xiao Yan up in a tortoiseshell bondage and stuck a piece of white paper on his body. He wrote: "Scoundrel sneaks into the bedroom with malicious intent. I happened to catch him. If he dares to do it again, he will be castrated without mercy."
"Alright, let's leave it like this. It's just a pity I didn't see his ring. Stripped him completely and still didn't find it! What bad luck."
To be honest, dealing with Xiao Yan wasn't the main point. The key was that Zuzong was after Xiao Yan's ring from the original story. Maybe it was because Xiao Yan was still too young and hadn't obtained it yet.
In the boudoir, Xun'er listened to Ling Ying's report, her cute little face blushing. "This big brother is too naughty."
Ten minutes later, Zuzong finally satisfied his inner mischievousness and returned to Xun'er's room.
With only ten minutes left until the system would return him to the Douluo Continent, Zuzong didn't plan to run. Even if he did, with his current strength, he could hide from the Xiao family's few Dou Grandmasters, but not from the Dou Emperor peak expert Ling Ying.
In the boudoir, Xun'er was still alone. Ling Ying must have hidden in the shadows again.
Suddenly, Zuzong noticed Xun'er's face didn't look well. A bead of cold sweat appeared on her small forehead.
Zuzong asked, "What's wrong with you?"
"Nothing, it's just an old problem. It will go away after a while," Xun'er said, but Zuzong could tell she was in great pain—very, very much in pain. If he hadn't been there, she might have already passed out from the agony.
"Could it be... the fourth-ranked Heavenly Flame on the Heavenly Flame List—the Gold Emperor Incinerating Heavenly Flame?" Zuzong was shocked. A Heavenly Flame wasn't something ordinary people could endure, especially the fourth-ranked Heavenly Flame, capable of burning the sky and boiling the sea.
Now, the question arises: When a pitiful little girl beside you is being tortured by illness to the point of being unable to bear it, what would you do?
Qingjiao: Of course, strike while the iron is hot.
"Alright! Desperate times call for desperate measures."
Zuzong stretched out his right hand, gathering soul power in his palm. "Blue Silver Emperor—activate!" A Blue Silver Emperor filled with life force appeared in his hand, and its leaves grew, gently wrapping around Xun'er.
"What are you doing?" Xun'er trembled from the Heavenly Flame's side effects. But after saying this, she felt a warm energy spread throughout her body. It wasn't so unbearable anymore.
Zuzong no longer wore his usual smiling face and said seriously, "You're in bad shape right now. This is the Blue Silver Emperor, which has strong vitality and can help you recover."
Xun'er nodded her cute little head hesitantly.
Ling Ying, hiding in the shadows, felt his heart in his throat. He knew Xun'er's condition, but even the many elders of the Gu Clan couldn't resolve it, let alone him. He never expected this mysterious young man in front of him to suppress Xun'er's Heavenly Flame side effects, leaving him in awe.
Zuzong's soul power, filled with life force, passed into Xun'er's body through the Blue Silver Emperor leaves, nourishing her meridians. Unlike Dou Qi, soul power generally wasn't as powerful when cultivated to higher levels, but it was unique in nurturing the body. This was why talented soul masters in the Douluo Continent generally reached adult height by the age of eleven or twelve. The Blue Silver Emperor's soul power was even more so.
But what Zuzong hadn't noticed was that while the Blue Silver Emperor was nurturing Xun'er's meridians, it was also absorbing a trace of the sub-flame of the Gold Emperor Incinerating Heavenly Flame. However, this is a story for another time.
The brief ten minutes were almost up, but it felt like twenty years to Zuzong. His soul power was exhausted. Using the last bit of his soul power, Zuzong transplanted the Blue Silver Emperor seedling into a flowerpot in Xun'er's boudoir.
Zuzong said, "I've used a lot of soul power to help you suppress the side effects. I also left a Blue Silver Emperor seedling here for you. This Blue Silver Emperor can absorb some of the Gold Emperor Incinerating Heavenly Flame, which will help with future incidents. I'll leave now."
Zuzong turned around and was about to leave, but Xun'er stopped him. "Big brother, can I ask your name?"
"Zuzong."
After saying this, Zuzong vanished, disappearing from the Xiao family's mansion. As he disappeared, he also whispered, "Until we meet again."
In the boudoir, Xun'er stared blankly at the empty room, muttering the name "Zuzong" under her breath. After a while, a small smile formed on her delicate lips.
"Until we meet again."
