Chapter 45: Chapter 45 - Shield Clash
Arrogant!
Meng Yiran's beautiful eyes hardened the moment she heard Han Feng's dismissive words, anger and hatred flashing across her pale face. A snake-headed staff appeared in her hand, her arms covered in a layer of purple serpent-scale armor. Two yellow soul rings floated protectively around her as she lunged toward Han Feng.
"Hmph."
Han Feng sneered coldly, unmoving. His blazing Celestial Shield materialized, two yellow soul rings spinning behind him. Without even activating Martial Soul Possession, his first ring lit up, and a faint glow pulsed through the shield as its flames became more condensed.
Seeing this, Dai Mubai and Tang San both rubbed their temples helplessly.
They knew Han Feng was setting yet another trap.
Everyone who had been provoked by his words eventually tasted his shield up close.
Meng Yiran, unaware of this, took his inaction as contempt and mockery. Snarling, she swung her snake-headed staff with full force.
Clang!
Han Feng remained perfectly still, the attack bouncing harmlessly off the Celestial Shield. Thanks to his soul skill, Aegis of Life, not even a single spark was disturbed.
He almost felt regretful—this skill granted absolute defense against the first strike, no matter the opponent's power. Using it to block such a feeble blow felt like a waste.
"So tough!? "
Meng Yiran's eyes widened in shock. Her snake-headed staff wasn't top-tier, but its attack power was among the best for assault-type weapons. Even Snake Granny herself, watching from the sidelines, was stunned—no one knew that weapon's destructive power better than she did.
Zhao Wuji, however, smirked lazily. Even a Soul Sect couldn't break through Han Feng's first soul skill with a single strike, he thought. But of course, he wasn't about to explain that to them.
Recovering quickly, Meng Yiran's eyes gleamed as purple light flared from the snake-headed staff. The carved serpent at its tip seemed to come alive, its eyes shining as it lashed out with a venomous crimson tongue.
First Soul Skill: Serpent Blade!
It was designed to pierce defenses with a concentrated, poison-laced strike that troubled many defensive-type soul masters.
But not Han Feng.
The Celestial Shield blazed brilliantly, incinerating the incoming toxin in an instant. The hungry flames continued to surge down the staff toward Meng Yiran's arm.
Dai Mubai and the others grinned—they knew this was Han Feng's self-created soul skill.
"Damn it! " Meng Yiran's pupils shrank as sweat beaded on her forehead. She tried to shake off the fire with her second skill, Serpent Body, but it clung to her like a maggot burrowing into bone.
Panic set in. She could feel the heat creeping toward her heart. If it reaches me, I'll lose instantly!
Han Feng moved.
If Snake Granny weren't watching, he'd have taunted her mercilessly, but even so, he couldn't help thinking, She's far too weak.
"Roar!"
The Celestial Shield flared, brimming with power equivalent to a Soul Sovereign's full-force strike. Even Zhao Wuji paled.
"Stop!"
"You brat, halt! "
Snake Granny and Zhao Wuji roared simultaneously—they knew that if this hit, Meng Yiran would be crippled or worse.
But they were too far away, wary of each other, and not built for speed. All they could do was watch, horrified, as Han Feng closed in.
Snake Granny's cloudy eyes widened, bloodshot with panic. If her granddaughter was seriously harmed, Dragon Duke would hunt Shrek Academy to the ends of the earth.
Zhao Wuji cursed inwardly. I knew letting him fight was a mistake—I didn't think he was this reckless!
Boom!
Flames roared, leaving a charred path behind Meng Yiran.
"You lost."
Han Feng's shield passed harmlessly by her, the searing fire having stripped away the lingering blaze from her body. Even so, her arms were burned badly enough to require immediate treatment, or they might suffer permanent damage.
Han Feng wasn't one to hold back out of pity, but he knew better than to kill her. Shrek Academy couldn't afford to make an enemy of the famed Dragon Duke over him.
Snake Granny stared coldly at Han Feng, conflicted. She had to admit the truth—the trail of scorched earth proved he could have struck her granddaughter down. Meng Yiran's injuries were his way of telling her it was over. And the fact that he'd deliberately missed?
That was mercy.
Reluctantly, she accepted it.
Zhao Wuji let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding. Thank goodness the brat knows his limits…
"No! I didn't lose! You cheated! "
Meng Yiran's stubborn cry broke the tense silence. She raised her staff for another round.
"Yiran, enough! You lost. We're leaving."
Snake Granny's voice was firm, her gaze softening only when it fell on her granddaughter's arms. She turned to Zhao Wuji with a curt nod.
"Clear Sky King, we'll take our leave. Apologies for the earlier offense."
"All good! "Zhao Wuji replied with a hearty laugh, having gotten what he wanted.
When they were gone, Zhao Wuji shot Han Feng a long, meaningful look, clapping him on the shoulder.
"Kid, I misjudged you," he said cryptically.
"Huh?"
Han Feng blinked, confused. Misjudged me? Was he disappointed? He doesn't look it… Then why does that smile feel so annoyingly smug?
