Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Spirit Beast Invasion
As a native of Douluo Continent and the young master of the Clear Sky Sect, Tang San was exceptionally sensitive to national affairs.
Due to its declining strength, the Heaven Dou Empire had fractured internally. Though it appeared to be a centralized power on the surface, in reality, the empire contained four kingdoms and one duchy—five states that were practically independent, lacking only a formal declaration.
Yet even if this village wasn't a major city, it was still protected by the kingdom's military. How could Spirit Beasts have invaded here?
"Third Young Master!"
Just after Tang San rescued the villager, several people dressed in the outer sect attire of the Clear Sky Sect hurried over.
Tang San asked, "What's the situation?"
The leading youth, Liang Yao, sighed and shook his head. "It's bad. The entire village is littered with corpses. Not only are the houses destroyed, but… we also saw giant earthworms feeding."
Spirit Beasts feeding—there was no need to explain what that meant.
"Third Young Master, should we still proceed into the Five Wood Basin?" Liang Yao asked.
Tang San wasn't here to hunt for his third Soul Ring—he had already obtained it a year ago, a five-thousand-year Soul Ring. While Spirit Beasts just reaching a thousand years were hard to find, those between four and five thousand years were easier to locate due to the broader range. Tang San's Soul Power had now reached level 37.
This time, he had come to the border of the Balak Kingdom intending to enter the Five Wood Basin to escort the sect's herb-gathering team. He had only stopped here after hearing cries for help.
Despite his status, Tang San couldn't afford to be idle—he still needed to contribute to the sect. Moreover, doing so would boost his reputation within the sect. In short, he was here to complete a sect mission and build his prestige.
Tang San glanced at the village ahead and said, "First, we deal with these Spirit Beasts. While protecting villages and cities is the duty of the kingdom and empire's soldiers, our Clear Sky Sect is also a sect of Soul Masters. We have no reason to stand by and watch as Spirit Beasts slaughter our people."
"I'll handle eliminating the Spirit Beasts in the village. You all focus on search and rescue. Save as many villagers as possible—don't hesitate to use medicinal herbs."
Upon hearing Tang San's orders, the others quickly responded, "Understood, Third Young Master."
Without wasting words, Tang San charged forward. As the strongest here—a level 37 Soul Elder—dealing with these ten or hundred-year Spirit Beasts was child's play.
With a boom, Tang San kicked off the ground, shooting into the village like an arrow. His Clear Sky Hammer spun through the air, and thanks to his mastery of the Chaotic Cloak Hammer Technique, even without using any Soul Skills, the hammer flew like a boomerang, precisely obliterating its targets.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Under the Clear Sky Hammer, the giant earthworms burst like balloons, one after another.
Hiss!
A massive earthworm with three eyes burst from the ground, raising its head and letting out a shrill cry.
"Th-Three… Three-Eyed Magic Earthworm!!! A thousand-year Spirit Beast!" one of the herb-gathering Soul Masters following Tang San stammered in terror.
As soon as the words fell, one after another black shadow darted out from behind the Three-Eyed Magic Earthworm standing proudly at the rear of the village. The sound of rustling soil echoed as giant earthworms emerged from the ground, scattering around their ruler, the Three-Eyed Magic Earthworm.
"So... so many... so many!!!"
Hordes of giant earthworms appeared behind the village, summoned by the Three-Eyed Magic Earthworm. They collectively burst forth from the soil, their numbers seemingly endless, pouring out from the mountainous basin behind them like a tidal wave.
A flash of purple light flickered in Tang San's eyes as he swiftly scanned the surroundings of the Three-Eyed Magic Earthworm. Confirming there were no survivors left, he no longer held back.
With a hum, the Second Soul Ring beneath Tang San's feet emitted a purple glow. In the next instant, the earth surged as yellow terrestrial energy poured into the Clear Sky Hammer in his right hand. The originally black-red hammer now radiated a yellow light.
"Second Soul Skill, Mountain Moving!"
With a resounding boom, Tang San leaped high into the air. In that split second, the Clear Sky Hammer in his hand expanded rapidly, appearing as massive as a small mountain from afar.
The Second Soul Skill, Mountain Moving, allowed him to manipulate the earth's power. Not only could it generate stone pillars from the ground, but it could also enchant the Clear Sky Hammer, making it as colossal as a mountain.
In that fleeting moment, the Clear Sky Hammer, empowered by the Second Soul Skill, came crashing down like a mountain shifting to fill the sea. Under the deafening impact, not only the mere thousand-year cultivation Three-Eyed Magic Earthworm but even the earth itself couldn't withstand the blow.
The ground split, mountains crumbled—it was as if an earthquake had struck, leaving behind massive fissures. Even the giant earthworms hiding underground were utterly crushed.
Witnessing this scene, the herb-gathering disciples of the Clear Sky Sect were utterly awestruck. Today, they had personally witnessed the legendary son of the Clear Sky Douluo, the one known as the Third Young Master of the Clear Sky Sect, take action.
With just one move, he could shift mountains and fill seas, split the earth and crumble mountains.
"The Third Young Master is incredibly strong."
"With this strike, forget a level-30 Soul Elder, even a level-40 Soul Ancestor would likely be shattered to pieces."
A single attack had nearly annihilated the entire earthworm nest ruled by a thousand-year Spirit Beast. Only a few lucky ones, those who had burrowed slower, managed to escape.
Seeing this, Tang San wasted no words. He retracted the Clear Sky Hammer and murmured inwardly, "Ghost Ring, collect souls."
A white Ghost Ring emerged from Tang San's shadow. He didn't summon his entire Martial Soul, as there was no need for battle—only to absorb the souls of the deceased Spirit Beasts.
The Ghost Ring glowed white as strands of Soul Light were drawn from the Spirit Beasts' Soul Rings. In just three seconds, the Soul Rings shattered like glass and vanished completely.
Tang San wasn't surprised by this outcome. A year ago, when he had enchanted his Third Soul Ring in the Spirit Beast Forest, he had used the Ghost Ring to absorb souls. Back then, the Spirit Beasts' Soul Rings had also disappeared, rendering them unabsorbable.
After retracting the Ghost Ring, Tang San smiled wryly. "Ten-year and hundred-year Spirit Beasts are still too weak. To evolve to God-level, I'd probably need millions of them."
Moments later, the herb-gathering team from the Clear Sky Sect rushed over. Tang San asked, "How is it?"
"Reporting to the Third Young Master, we've searched all the ruins. No one survived—they were either crushed by the Spirit Beasts or eaten."
"We estimate the Spirit Beast invasion must have been going on for half a day already. That villager earlier probably went out and thus avoided disaster, only to be attacked by Spirit Beasts when returning, surviving by calling for help," Liang Yao shared his analysis.
Tang San walked over to the villager lying on the ground, his wounds treated and his body wrapped in bandages, and asked, "Hasn't the kingdom's border always been guarded by soldiers and Soul Masters? Why hasn't any Soul Master come to eliminate the Spirit Beasts after half a day?"
The villager replied, "I don't know. The kingdom used to have soldiers patrolling, but at some point, they just disappeared."
