Chapter 16: Future
"Father?" Noa exclaimed, leaving his seat immediately. "What are you doing here?"
Kaelor entered wearing dark, sturdy clothing, and pinned to his chest was the house sigil—a ferocious winged creature clad in black flame.
It was a silent reminder of his lineage.
Behind him, Elara stepped forward, carrying a familiar grace. Her warm eyes scanned the library, and compared to her husband, she showed a gentler smile.
"Mother, you as well? What are you guys doing here?" Noa asked, his heart racing.
"Don't look at me like I am going to spank your ass," Kaelor jested.
Then he glanced at Thalia and commanded her softly, "Can you leave us with our son?"
"Yes, My Lord," the maid answered and bowed before leaving.
Though she gave Noa a brief glance, as if trying to encourage him.
Then she walked out of the room, the door clicking shut.
"I spoke with your teachers," Kaelor started promptly. "I had a nice conversation with your mother as well, and we decided to confront you."
Noa gulped.
'So that's how it is,' he thought, guessing that Darrik and Haric both reported his doing.
"Confront me about what?" he then asked, locking eyes with both of them.
"It's about your future," Elara spoke this time, her voice softer than anything Noa had ever heard. "Do you have any plans? Or would you like to hear our suggestion?"
"I know how he is, and I am sure he has no idea what to do," Kaelor interrupted suddenly, ignoring the glare he got from his wife.
Noa went silent for a moment.
'My plans? I want to get strong so I can collect ashes and use my necromancy. So I can revive dragon legacy and rule over this world.'
This was his first time actually articulating his intentions.
But Noa quickly found gaps he had to fill.
Firstly, he had no idea how he would do all of that. He needed more knowledge and understanding of this world.
"I don't know," he shrugged and answered. "I have grand visions, yet I have no idea how to fulfill them."
He also remembered one more goal he wanted to achieve and spoke, letting conviction carry his voice.
"But I want to protect our house. I know I have the talent and potential to change things, so please guide me."
Kaelor wanted to laugh wholeheartedly, but he held himself back.
He was in a great mood and saw the same emotions on Elara's face.
"A man doesn't need all the answers. Sometimes the will to protect something is more than enough," he said to his son, gently resting his hands on Noa's shoulders.
"As a mother, nothing makes me prouder than watching you grow. I am glad you asked for our advice," Elara said and stepped forward.
She took Noa's hand, her touch warm and kind.
"The Arcane Academy in the capital has exams for its new intakes in three weeks. If you want, Noa… we will send you," she added, and hugged both her son and husband.
A quick silence fell as they all enjoyed the moment.
But Kaelor grumbled suddenly, his voice half playful and half embarrassed.
"This is how strong goes soft… Too many sentiments."
Elara whispered, releasing them both. "I remember one time you dropped your sword, the second I hugged you."
Kaelor coughed in defense. "That's because it was bloody and I didn't want you to smell more than you already do. What an ungrateful hag."
"What about the first time you saw me? What made you stumble over your words?" Elara grinned and fought back.
Meanwhile, Noa couldn't help but smile as he looked at them.
'They are cute,' he thought instinctively. 'Now they are my only family.'
He still didn't know whose emotions he was experiencing, but he no longer cared about that.
The feeling in his chest was real, and nothing could change it.
If it wasn't love just yet, at least he felt belonging towards them. Because no matter how the future will turn out, Noa knew he had a place he could return to.
"That's because of your dress," Kaelor answered Elara, glaring at her like a kid.
Seeing their constant banter, Noa sighed and said,
"I will go."

Now, five days later, he lay flat on his bed, his head in chaos.
'Less than 8 hours before the awakening,' he thought, staring at the ceiling.
These five days were the hardest and most exhausting moments of his entire life. His mornings started early, with Haric pushing him past his limits by brutally testing his physical capabilities.
Though his muscle mass increased and his endurance improved, the memories of the commander's sadistic face still haunted him.
After the morning practices, Darrik came and taught him magic theories.
The Mage also helped him improve his mana recovery and perception, allowing him to better sense mana particles.
'But I still can't shape them.'
Even though he couldn't unlock the Second Thresholds, the progress was undeniable, leaving his teachers stunned each time.
But nothing could top the advancement he gained in understanding Verdora's history.
The world was vaster and more mysterious than he gave credit for, yet there was no mention of dragons.
Also, it was a much scarier place than he had believed.
Not all beasts were friendly with humans, as most of them resented and hunted humanity, especially beasts with higher intellect who would never bow to humans.
The main threat the world faced was deeply rooted wars that countless prophecies spoke of.
Turns out, the wars weren't just predictions, and beasts grew more ferocious day by day.
They left their territories and attacked humanity's strongholds, destroying cities and small kingdoms simultaneously.
As Noa spent these five days improving himself, Thalia remained by his side.
The maid was flawlessly completing her duties while also training alongside him.
She offered him quiet support and played a significant role in his success.
These past few days awakened a fire in Noa's heart that refused to burn out, and it stayed with him until the contract ceremony began.
